on Gost's end of regulation kick.

Just saw this on ESPN Countdown.

The NFL has admitted to this:

. @FieldYates: From @AdamSchefter: NFL sent video to all teams this week reviewing pushing penalty. It included 2 examples, 1 of which was Quinton Coples…

@FieldYates: … on Stephen Gostkowksi's game-tying FG from last week. That play was not called a penalty at the time, though league admits now it was one.

How does the game change if we score a TD on that drive? F the zebras.

Refereeing is area in which the league offices most directly affect what happens in games. The league should knock itself out to make refereeing as strong as possible, and most of us feel they don't do well enough.

That said, at least they try to referee the games honestly. I say that by way of contrast to basketball, where I think the pro-star bias has long been condoned as part of the league's focus on star-based marketing. I'm a greater basketball than football fan even so, but NBA refereeing makes me sick.

Hindsight is always 20/20.

The end result isn't going to be changed as much as we all want it to be. It's time to move on.

Just saw this. Wonder what Breer and his fellow Jets fans in the NY MEdia will say now after dismissing comparisons all week.

Nothing

roger jetsgoodell with tell them to shut their mouths and move on

it was a missed call that could have impacted the end of that game.

the commish wanted this and he got it.

Agreed.

The annoying thing about this situation is how much much the Pats have been taking it on the chin for "not knowing the rule," coupled with the smugness of the Jets — both supported by a lot of folks in the media. It's good to see the league knocking that down a bit, though, yeah, bit too late. (Edit - - Another annoying thing: the use of the word "cheating" applied to a team for a penalty. Seriously? Guess the league is saying the Jets cheated now?)

The league didn't knock it down publicly. The info was leaked. Maybe by the Patriots?

The only thing to note here is the Patriots incorrectly knew the rule; and hence they coached their players incorrectly. Basically an honest mistake that probably shouldn't have happened - but if the 'not on the line of scrimmage' was removed after a proposal of the rule was sent out and a video of the nfl explaining it was made, I understand how the mistake happened -- hopefully in the future they have someone actually understand the exact wording of the final rule version.

The Jets obviously knew exactly what the rule was, and they used an illegal technique anyways; which means they either knew they could get away with it until alerting the refs before OT of it (even though they knew they were breaking it all game long); or they had a failure in coaching their players on the rule.

That is exactly what happened IMO. and thats what burns my .ass. the most. We cant get the game back, but just a claim from the NFL that they deliberately determined that game when our weakened defense held out when it mattered most. BB always says and coaches that the last few plays determine the score. And those last few plays were robbed from them, plain and simple. Everyone knows that the Jest were given that game. I live in the middle of the Jest pig sty, and I can tell you that's how everyone here sees it. And most fans that are not Jest fans , hate them and think they are a joke. I know some read, over at JI, that everyone hates the Pats, but that is just a deflection of their own reality that the Jest are the circus and embarrassment of the league. EDIT: Another note is that I don't think the coaches coached wrong. They saw that the rest of the league had been doing the same thing. The Jest did it earlier in that game. The Refs pulled it out of their hat at a time when it never should have. EVERYBODY knows that, whether they admit it or not.

Yeah, the "not knowing the rule" thing is what really drives me nuts.

I mean, we've already been over how the VP of officiating didn't understand the rule. And now we learn even the team that pointed the finger at us didn't even understand the rule.

But yeah, BB is a moron for breaking a rule nobody knows...

Again, it's not the only reason we lost the game, and we had more than enough chances to win before that point. But it's clear the NFL had to clarify the rule because they didn't even understand it. Glad they sent out the clarifications to the teams but they should also send it out to all of their officials too because they're clearly missing it and not understanding things either.

Well at least they acknowledged it.

WAIT! The JETS 'cheated?' Impossible! The folks on Gang Green have assured me only the Patriots 'cheat'!!! It can't be! The world's going to collapse! The Jets are verified cheaters!!!! Oh, the infamy!

Suddenly the word "cheat" and all its variations is nowhere to be found in today's coverage. Even on Deadspin. Go figure.

God I wish the Pats played the Jets again this year.

It's not cheating when you have a fan in the commissioner's seat who guarantees that no fouls will be noticed until 7 days later.

Piecing together Jonny Kraft's comments via Volin on Twitter:

Pats president Jonathan Kraft on @985TheSportsHub last week's push call: "from what I’m told it’s happened a number of times..."

... "and I would argue ... that at the end of the game with a 56 yard FG, it’s probably not the best time to call it."

"At the same time, it’s the rule."

Kraft sums up why I felt - it's the rule, so hard to be too angry, but at the same time it was like losing on a pass interference call on a Hail Mary.
