Jeff Howe on Chandler Jones' 2013 start

I know it's a long shot but imagine Michael Johnson from cin lining up at the opposite end of jones next year.

I can't remember who it was (Bedard, Rap?). But they where saying Johnson was going to be who the Pats where going to target in FA this year. Intill he was tagged of course.

EDIT: It was Bedard

According to league sources, the Patriots would have gotten in on Bengals end Michael Johnson, but he was wisely tagged by the Bengals.

Re: Re: Jeff Howe on Chandler Jones' 2013 start

Think Jones could get close to that, wonder if he'll get as much hype.

Watt had 21.5 sacks last season and Jones could come close but the thing that was most amazing about Watt last season was his 16 pass deflections that is an area Jones is yet to become effective at.

I'd prefer Clowney if we're being overly hopeful

Re: Re: Jeff Howe on Chandler Jones' 2013 start

Would the Patriots have enough cap space to make an addition as such? He is a mouth watering prospect.

Bedard speculated they had interest if he wasn't tagged this year. If we want a Bengal I'd prefer Atkins.

Henry Melton may also hit the market.

Jones-Kelly-Jones-Ninkovich

That may be a front that is susceptible to the run, but that will be a great pass rushing group by the end of the year.

The Bengals just re-upped Atkins. It's a shame that we didn't manage to get Red Bryant in 2012. Naturally, we didn't blow him away with an offer, so he went back home.

I'd be all for signing Johnson, but we're more likely to re-up Nink and look for a vet DE. P.S. John Abraham is having a solid year.

I missed that report – thanks for the information. 5 years/$55 million = a nice pay day for Geno.

The Patriots did just resign Ninkovich thru 2016: Rob Ninkovich, New England Patriots agree to contract extension, source says - ESPN Boston

I think that's in part to the difference in their responsibilities as watt is a 3-4 DE and rarely at the same angle that jones is at

Could be the reason, honestly I have not watched enough film on Watt to know where he lines up, I know he spends more time on the left side of the line which allows him to see the quarterbacks arm more often than Jones who spends the majority of his snaps on the right side of the defensive line.

Jones was the third most important player on D through the start of the season, by my estimation. Even though he was obviously playing injured, Vince was still a big part in stopping the run. Mayo was huge in coverage on TE's and RB's out of the backfield, an area which killed the Pats defense last season (and a big reason for why the Ravens got on the move in the AFCCG). They're both gone now, but we still have Jones who has been such a big reason (now that he's healthy) for the improved pass rush we're seeing, as is noted in the stats Ian posted. The challenge now is getting someone across from him that can be more of a consistent pass rusher than Ninkovich on third downs and can set the edge better than Buchanan against mobile quarterbacks. That's why I'm hoping Carter picks up right where he left off. He would be just what the doctor ordered for the pass rush. A DL of Jones-Kelly-Armstead-Carter on third downs would be hard to block, and would allow the Pats to flood the middle of the field against the short passing game while still getting a reliable and consistent pass rush.

How many did JJ "Best player in the history of ever" Watt have last year?

20 sacks. I have no idea where the sarcasm comes from. Watt was a beast and we'd be lucky if we could have him on our team.

Back to Chandler Jones. He's on pace for 15-17 sacks. And I think he's likely to get there. He's our best pass rusher hands down. I hope we invest in DL again next year. We need another DT and DE. Was hoping that the Canadian DE Armstead would step up but he's been injured all year basically.

Why are people putting down Watt? He's worth two Chandler Jones.

Not sure about being worth two Chandler Jones', but Watt is presently the better player.

If the Raiders didn't arbitrarily decide to be an okay football team that one year, we'd have JJ Watt AND Chandler Jones. Sadface.

Instead we got Nate Solder. And Matt Light retired the very next year. Dunno, I'd love to have Watt, but it's also important to keep Brady standing upright.

2011 NFL Draft - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Actually if you want to talk about changing time --
In the 2008 NFL draft I wanted Ryan Clady. He has since turned into an elite LT.
So if we drafted Clady in 2008, we wouldn't need to draft Solder in 2011.
And then we could have moved UP to draft Watt in 2010.
But we would miss out on Mayo.

Would you rather have --

Clady, Watt, Jones

OR

Mayo, Solder, Jones

Saying Chandler Jones is not JJ Watt is no slight. If I could build a dream defense of current players, Watt would be my number one pick. At his age, position, size, health and production, he is the perfect 3-4 defensive end. He's a monster in the run game, swats passes, crushes QBs and his motor never lets up (as evidenced by the forced fumble in the Pats game).

Jones is a heck of a player though. He's not given the ability to just pin his ears back and lose lane responsibilities like some guys in the league. The Pats DEs really do have to focus on run defense at least as much as getting at the QB. Despite that he's been a terror on the edge and should only get better as he adds strength and learns how to use those long arms even better.

I have high hopes for Michael Buchanon and Chris Jones. I think they can team up with Chandler Jones and make for a very good pass rush. I think Buchanon just needs to get stronger, Chris Jones just needs to keep improving, his strength is fine, and he's producing at a good pace already.
