Oh yeah, there were definitely bad calls both ways. We got more of them, but it's never as one-sided as the losing team would have you believe. They could've called OPI on Stills several times, including on the go-ahead touchdown.

Has anyone seen a screenshot of the Hoomanawanui? I was 100% sure that it bounced off the turf when I watched it, but enough people are sure that it was a legit catch that I'm becoming curious.

That wasn't a catch, we got the home call and the no huddle helped, it hit dirt clearly. But we did get screwed on a catch (can't remember) where the receiver was finally physical, so its all fair, Giants/Packers/Ravens etc get away with physically pushing off defenders every week. Maybe the new guys are getting respect slowly, fine with me.

Have to say I thought it was clearly a catch. The angle I saw had the ball hit the top of his boot and I don't remember seeing it hit the turf.

However, please bear in mind it was 5 AM when I started watching the game.

Not a catch but if I remember correctly it was on the drive where Dobson dropped the 4th down pass so really you can argue that not stopping the clock there should have benefited New Orleans in the long run had they converted a first down their next possession.

One New Orleans writer is fanning the flames and inciting WhoDat Nation. From the comment section it also appears that many Saints fane believe the Patriots were able to use four timeouts in the second half. There are also a few that are complaining about a pass that should have been ruled incomplete - while overlooking that the completion hurt the Pats because it was only a 2-yard gain, and the clock kept running as a result.

Whodat Nation cries foul over shoddy officiating in Saints loss | NOLA.com
Whodat Nation reaction to the New Orleans Saints 30-27 loss to the New England Patriots shows a decided belief that the Saints came out on the wrong end of some very poor officiating.

But let's not dwell on the call on Malcolm Jenkins that involved no head contact. We should also shake off Drew Brees not getting a timeout call before an interception. Also, make sure you forget about the neutral zone infraction against the Patriots that magically morphed into a false start on the Saints.

Make sure you do however, focus on the arm wrapped around Junior Gallete's neck as he tries to get to Tom Brady seconds before the Patriots quarterback launches the game-winning touchdown pass to the corner of the end zone. There is ample photographic evidence of that.

Shabby indeed.

It would be interesting, and amusing, if someone with the game tape and the ability to snap some gifs were to post every single Saints hold that was left uncalled.

I really don't get the complaining about the Jenkins hit. When the facemask gets turned like that it's called literally 100% of the time.

Did Chandler Jones get credit with a sack on Brees on the 3rd down at the end?

When a person only looks for one thing then it stands to reason that is all that they will ever find.

Snicker. Know what else there is "ample evidence" of? The refs letting the players play in the final seconds of the game. We've been on the screwed end of this many times before. SO this writer can go boo hoo somewhere else.

I think it's funny when some of our fans are under the impression that the refs are out to get us. It's just that refs have well called games and poorly called games, no real motives. If anything the officiating generally favors the Pats because admittedly guys like Brady and Manning do tend to get preferential treatment.

Actually, Brady doesn't get preferential treatment - at least as far as hits to the QB are concerned. He gets flags thrown on this at nearly the lowest rate in the NFL. Not sure on what basis you're claiming preferential treatment...

The exact text can be found in Rule 7, Section 4, Article 4 of the rulebook:

You're right that that's the rule, but that's exactly what happened in the game:

Saints vs. Patriots 10-13-2013 - Bad False Start Call (just one of many bad calls) - YouTube

That's pretty much textbook NFI. Vellano going into the neutral zone induced Evans to move, and it appeared that it was in response to impending contact. The refs made the wrong call, and, since Saints fans have a collective persecution complex that's rivaled only by Ravens and Jets fans, they latched onto missed call that hurt them as proof that the league is out to get them. That's ridiculous, but let's not overreact to it by trying to rewrite history and claim that we didn't benefit from any bad calls. We did, and they did too.

Just don't see it. Vellano bites on the hard count and then catches himself and goes down on all fours. There is no danger of contact.

What the replay doesn't show is the sound, which I think matters -- if it was the hard count that cause the offensive lineman to move, it's not an NZI. I just don't see any way one could judge protection from impending contact there.

I can't do gifs yet (I may attempt them later), but here are screenshots!

The 29 yard screen pass. Jones dove and just missed. He would have had a much better chance at it if he hadn't been pulled out of the play by his jersey.

Incompletion on 2nd and 4. Jones getting the one-arm wraparound.

Would have been declined anyway (incompletion on 3rd and 10), but another shot of Jones' blocker blocking with just one arm.

Incompletion on first and 10. Vellano isn't just running past his blocker, he is already past him.

Apparently holding is okay if both blockers do it to Ninkovich at the same time. The 4 yard pass on 3rd and 5 that set up the infamous 4th and 1 false start.

Ninkovich getting his jersey grabbed. 14 yard pass on 2nd and 7.

Arm around the neck, pretty much exactly what the Saints fans are complaining about on the winning TD pass.

The second and 20 before the 3rd and 20 TD pass. Should have been 2nd and 30.

I'm sure some of those might be considered slightly iffy, but if Saints fans are going to complain about the helmet to helmet penalty on Thompkins, then I'd say there's a better case for all 8 of these than that.

Nicely done....

I'm tempted to sign up at a Saints board, just to post that. If Pherein sees it, maybe it'll at least stop him from griping about the calls, which he was (sadly) doing.

They actually have an article on NOLA.com *****ing about the calls and egging them on. This is their major newspaper! IF a writer in Boston did that he'd get crucified for being in the bag for the team.

I was at the game and I stayed until the end when half the place cleared out. I was in a luxury box, there were only about 10 of us left watching an improbable last drive.

As Brady was quickly driving the ball up the field and Brady threw that TD pass the whole box exploded. I was slapping hands with everybody in the box.

As I walking down the stairs I have never seen a happier crowd. People were cheering the whole time. As I was walking toward the train I still heard the people cheering exiting the arena.

It was not a superbowl win, it was not even a playoff game but it was a surreal experience that I will never forget.

I read it. It's an incredibly embarrassing article for that paper. Then again, most papers today seem to have almost no shame or sense of embarrassment.

Great post Sciz. That lends itself to a little balanced perspective. If only our media outlets were so invested in actuality.

With some exceptions*, I'm better informed here than in the media. I'll just add my thanks to Sciz's effort.

* Meant as a compliment to some in the media, not a denegration of Patsfans posters.
