These guys deserve some praise, put into a bad situation where the top two middle DLine men go down, and these two rookies come in and are just playing as well as they can and despite a few runs yesterday looked and played almost as good as our first stringers.

One play that sticks out in my mind was in the 3rd or 4th quarter, there was a screen/short pass to Sproles on third down and Jones while initially stood up but he spun around and chased down Sproles short of the first down. It showed great hustle and awareness for a rookie. I was impressed.

They definitely have been nowhere near as good as Wilfork/Kelly. But they've been decent which I give them credit for.

These two absolutely deserve praise no doubt about it :rocker:

But it was also clear at times in the second half we really need Kelly back and anything Armstead can give us too. It will be key to have Vallano and Jones for depth and Vellano will be starting next to Kelly all year most likely as I dont see Armstead coming right in and winning out and really anything he can do is a plus. Basically I think we will be good with Kelly, Velano, and Jones and Vellano and Jones deserve huge props for this.

But IMO one of the keys to the Saints rally was that they started running up the middle and shortening up their 2nd and third down plays. There were some decent rushes up the middle, part of it is not just the DTs as the Saints present so much to handle that the LBs and DBs are worried about everything else too but I thought this was an easy and smart adjustment by the Saints.

Can we talk about the wording of the title of this thread for second? Hindsight in 20/20 but I'm not a fan of it.

The Saints averaged 5.0 per rush going 26/131. However 49 came on 3 rushes. So they held them to 3.5 YPA other than the 3 big gainers. It wasn't great but to be honest it was better than expected. While everybody is on the grab a receiver at the deadline bandwagon I'd prefer an interior DL.

What they lack in size and experience, they make up for in speed. Vellano was flying all over the field and led the team in tackles. That's highly impressive for a DT.

IIRC we were in sub packages BB didn't want Brees to the Pats with his arm and traded the running game to take away the passing game.

Jones played all 66 defensive snaps... Vellano played 56, that is more than they were expected to play at this stage of their development...

They played well..

Chris Jones played every single snap. That's damn impressive in itself. He's not Wilfork's size, but that's still the kind of endurance that is pretty much unheard of among DTs right now.

Chris Jones played every snap defensively yesterday. How would you assess his performance?

“Chris, as you mentioned, he got a lot of playing time yesterday. I think he was in there for every play, that’s right. Chris is a smart kid. He came in and picked things up pretty quickly. His play time has increased a little bit each week. I think he’s athletic, he runs well, he has good playing strength, he has a little bit of quickness in the pass rush and overall, he’s got I think decent skills in there. Look, it’s not perfect, there are certainly a lot of things that he can improve on. But I thought he and Joe [Vellano]both have given us, given their amount of experience and all the things they’ve had to deal with, in terms of the types of offenses that we’ve played and so forth, some of the payers in there, like Jahri Evans, pretty good player there and [Ben] Grubbs, that they’ve done a good job of hanging in there and being relatively productive. Again, a lot of things we need to work on, but the play that Chris made on the screen pass, it was sort of an angle screen there on [Darren] Sproles, I think it was in the second quarter, could have been a big play but Chris made the play from behind, just short of the first down, I think it was like third-and-6 or something like that, and he made the tackle for a four-yard gain. It was close to being a big play, as well as a third-down conversion. He’s active, he runs well, he’s been a factor in both the running game and the passing game. He still has a long way to go, but works hard, plays hard; tough kid. He’s smart and he’s done a good job picking things up.”

I actually know Joe Vellano thru some friends of his he played football for CBA which is in colonie NY right near Albany. Good to see him being productive

Can you rephrase this post into a coherent English sentence?

There were a series where they were literally being pushed back several yards a down by the interior O-line, but good to see they put it all together overall.

I think he's saying that the thread title sounds like you want to trade Vellano and Jones for a 2nd round pick.

Really the whole rookie class has been impressive so far this year. Ryan stepped in when Talib went down and the secondary continued to hold up well. Harmon got a decent amount of snaps, the WRs showed up, Buchanan has been a nice surprise, Collins made a nice special teams play on the last kickoff. Overall this has been a really productive class.

Each, right? A second round pick each?

Imagine if every thread title contained the words "Can we talk about..(....).for a second" Just a pet peeve of mine. carry on.

This is a great point. Neither he or Vellano is overly special, but they're both helping us out a lot.

Given where they were drafted, they have done well so far. They have done what was asked of them but I am afraid of how things will unfold when we play a team that really wants to test our run D.
