Gronk likely to play vs Saints

Latest report says they took some risk to get him back for the playoffs and are paying the price now.

Report: Gronk delayed by concern over arm | Comcast SportsNet - CSNNE.com

This is Monday morning quarterbacking. The chances of him reinjuring the arm were minimal at best. The arm healed totally. He didn't rebreak the arm. It was a totally new injury around the plate. It was foreseen as possible but not very likely at all.

Isn't the concern here about the infection and not about the plate?

yep, that is what Deadspin is reporting. Apparently, the Gronk clan is pretty p*ssed at BOTH the Pats organization and Dr. Gill. They feel that: a-the surgery wasn't necessary b-the bone would have healed by now if it had been permitted to heal naturally/on its own c-the infection caused by the plate which was surgically-inserted MAY HAVE permanently weakened the bone and surrounding nerves.

This explains A LOT of things, such as: Gronk's reluctance to come back on the team's timetable/schedule, the reports of "conflicts" between the Gronk clan and the Pats organization, the family's reluctance to okay Gronk's return a few weeks ago, etc.

I just hope that the unnecessary surgical insertion of that plate didn't cause irreparable damage to Gronk's forearm, but it sounds like that may be have been the case. Here's the Deadspin story:

Report: Gronk's Return Could Have Come Sooner Without Arm Surgery

Of course they did. This isn't the first time the team has rushed one of their guys back and paid the price for it. It was disgustingly obvious during the Dolphins game in Week 17 that Gronk wasn't 100% ready to go yet. I don't blame him and his family for not having trust in Gill and the team.

The infection was a risk of the surgery to put in the plate.

Isn't this article really just telling us what we already know though? It says there is concern with the forearmbeing healed and gronk wants to get Dr Andrews to clear him.

It doesn't state whether or not it has been healed. Just another article looking at the past and Monday morning quarterbacking

With all due respect, it goes much deeper than that, RIpats. The infection might have PERMANENTLY WEAKENED the bone, which means that Gronk may never be the same player he was prior to the surgery.

Fire Dr. Gill

To be fair though isn'thalf the team out there playing at less than 100%?? You've got amendola with two torn groins out there, Brady has played with broken bones, separated shoulders...and here you have gronk sitting out because he doesn't feel "comfortable yet" when by all accounts he looks like old gronk in practice

Infection is always a risk with surgery.

Someone had to have told Gronk that the arm would have otherwise healed naturally, but not in time for the playoffs. He had to know. And, it didn't get infected when they inserted the plate. It was infected after that second freak injury which caused them to do another surgery. Infected AFTER the second surgery.

I clearly remember before the Houston game how the media dissected Gronk's surgery. They discussed with doctors how the bone would heal and be stronger, and that the only risk with such a surgery (they didn't mention infection) was a very slim chance of the screw snapping at the bone. They said this was a rare occurrence.

And then it happened.

So much of what we are hearing is revisionist.

I hope Schefter is wrong.

Adam Schefter ?@AdamSchefter 51m
There is less optimism today than there was earlier this week that Rob Gronkowski will play Sunday vs. New Orleans. Still not cleared by Dr.

I couldn't care less about whether he plays in the NO game. His career is in jeopardy and everything possible should be done to ensure the arm is fully healed before he comes back.

If this were true, Ambulance chaser Borges would have run with this story already. And if not Borges, and the source is legit, then Glazer or Schefter would have run the story.

The re-break, subsequent surgeries and infection were all risks of the initial decision to insert the plate. The increased risk of re-break a the plate margin is not as well known as the risk of infection (which increases with each subsequent surgery). We simply don't know whether they did the research to quantify these risks or what they communicated to Gronk.

This would indicate that it wasn't simply an "arbitrary date" that Camp Gronk set for his return and that the forearm still isn't fully healed yet. If this is true, he may go on IR if he is to miss enough time.

Let him take the year off, no more risking his career. They rushed him back last year and it's still biting them in the ass.

If this happens, Gill needs to be **** canned.

I do not like thee, Dr Gill.

Kraft and BB really need to look over how they handle medical issues and Dr Gill in particular. Were I Kraft, the owner of a billion dollar franchise with multi-million dollar assets (players), I'd hire someone or a group from the outside to assess and evaluate my medical personnel and policies.

Why put him on IR if he can still return this year healthy? Heck he could eventually end up being cleared to play this weekend

If the forearm shows no signs of healing or getting back to normal this season (which could be the case, it's alarming that he's still not back to 100% this far after the surgery), why use a spot on the 53 for him when you can IR him and possibly bring someone else in that can actually contribute?
