The hit on Dobson !!

Brady threw it to him 100% expecting a flag. Immediately after the ball left his hand, he was pointing to the ref at the back of the end zone. I think he had Bolden open in the strong side flat.

Yes I thought the same think too regarding Bolden...Brady kinda had tunnel vision on that play I was screaming at my TV, Brady Throw to Bolden in the Flat.

Can someone please explain to me how that hit never drew a flag ?!!! So much inconsistency with the Refs where some games u see a flag for less than that. There were 2 reasons for the flag, 1. He WAS held. 2. How is that not spearing and a hit to the helmet ? God i said a prayer after i saw the hit , and did you see how Thompkins sat by his side while they were looking at Dobson on the ground. Love the guy and what a game he had. Bravo Thompkins. Bravo to all on the Team. I am afraid my young 15 year old son has named Sudfeld " Suckfeld " because every time he touches the ball something bad happens !! lol.
All in all a great win only thing that hurt us was big Vince going down, how we replace him God only knows. Best wishes. From Bahrain with love. Abdul.

Short answer: the refs just did a really uneven (and therefore bad) job tonight. The hit on Dobson and the fair catch hit on Edelman were absolutely dirty plays with the intend to injure, but then they did throw the flag on the Falcons safety who launched at a defenseless receiver, and they correctly called a pretty dangerous facemasking penalty that Hightower committed.

The league really should downgrade that crew - isn't this exactly the sort of situation that they went to bat over?

I know everyone feels Vince is more important to this team and rightly so, but I'm genuinely concerned about Dobson. Achilles is an achilles. But I don't like how Dobson's neck snapped. I held my breath. Wish we would just hear something that he's ok.

I know what you mean also Aaron Dobson is a nice third down option for Brady in the passing game...he has caught alot of 3rd down catches moving the chains. I love the progress of our young WR's there was a Josh Boyce sighting last nght. Sorry Brady didn't see when he beat his man off the line.

this game was really really horribly officiated. there were so many calls where you had to think someone was trying to force the falcons into the win.

Replay not working, non calls on endzone interference, placing the ball 2 yards from where the runner was down, etc.

It was closer to 2 feet but your point is well taken. Worse yet the sideline ref gave it to the back ref who mysteriously placed it well back from where we on TV could see it hit (that's before the runner moved it fwd another foot maybe)

Actually, one would think that with injuries of this type, no news, is good news.

I hope that's the case, and I agree. Unless he has to undergo more tests before making any public statements. I'd be happy to hear all he suffered out of that was a concussion and would miss one game. I can live with that.

Obviously, nothing is even better or just a temporary whiplash that's going to be felt for a couple of days. Hopefully it's one of those situations where it just looked a lot worse than it was.

The refs were almost as bad as our 1st Sunday Night Football game last year (vs. Ravens)

not just the hit on dobson, brady was irate about the hold on him

1) The "facemask" penalty on Mayo was incidental and no more egregious than the one that Alford committed on Dobson that caused the Dobson drop. Yet, Alford wasn't flagged and Mayo was. Should it have been called? Yes. But in BOTH cases.

2) There was no INTENT to injure Dobson. There was an intent to hit him as he caught the ball to jar it out, but he never caught the ball and was down on the ground when he got hit. Was he defenseless? Sure was. And THAT should have been called.

It's questionable whether Davis intended to injure Edelman. A player lowering their shoulder to hit a guy isn't automatically an intent to injure. Thinking it is makes you part of the problem.

He may not have intended to injure, but he clearly knew he was going to hit Edelman, who had clearly signaled for a fair catch. The guy made no attempt to avoid him, but lowered his shoulder instead. It definitely should have been an interference penalty.

I am actually curious about the fair catch hit on Edelman. IMO regardless of whether it was legal or not it was one of the more dirtier plays I have seen. Was the guy being blocked? Yes. But was he blocked into the returner? Not really, he was blocked close enough to the returner that he could make contact with him which given that he was blocked into the area I guess no penalty should be called.

But the problem I have is that the cover man then lowered his should and drove through Edelman who is defenseless and otherwise usually protected.

I would like to think that there is room in the rules for that to still have been called punt interference but as he was being blocked it was a tough thing to see. Anyone know if being blocked completely clears of punt interference or can it still be called if the ref deems the block didnt actually force you to hit the returner? (again I would like to think this can be a penalty).

Yes, that's absolutely a penalty. On that type of play, it is up to the ref's judgment, which is code for "the ref can decide whatever the hell he wants."

Thanks.

That's what I figured but I honestly did not know and I am generally fairly knowledgible of the rules.

He can, yes. And in this case, where the player turned toward the PR and deliberately lowered his shoulder and threw himself into him -- as the PR stood utterly defenseless, looking up toward the punt -- I can't fathom that there wasn't a flag. That was blatant intent.

Yeah, that was bizarre. I guess I could see that maybe McCourty guided him into Edelman, but once there, the defender clearly took advantage and drilled him with full intent. Really strange non-call.

McCourty was being pushed backwards and he wasn't pulling the guy with him. While it might have been one of those bam-bam plays. The Falcon (name???) didn't let up or even attempt to soften the blow. But, it kinda fit withthe way the game was being called (mostly glad Edleman was ok after that and there was no turnover).

It is football.
And it is very possible that while being blocked he did not see the fair catch signal too.

Refs had WAY too much affect on the outcome in this game. That 2nd half was horrendous. That game should not have been that close - even with the mistake.

It looked to me like he gave a little extra "oomph" with his shoulder - that was my problem with it.
