Should the Pats consider signing Aqib Talib long-term?

I wouldn't give him anything more than a 2-3 year deal. Even at that, I'd make sure releasing him would have no serious cap repercussions. If he screws up, I would want to make sure the Pats would be protected.

They just offered him a multi year deal that he turned down, in order to gamble on himself and receive a better payday at the end of the season. Actually, there were 3 teams that were reported to offer him multi year deals. One was NE, and another was WAS. The third team was never reported as far as I know.

I doubt that the front office/BB would increase their offer substantially enough at this point in time for Talib to feel comfortable enough to sign anytime soon. He'll be waiting it out to see what the market does on the first day of the free agent period and then go from there.

While we may not end up retaining Talib, we may find that bringing in something that resembles him (in terms of ability to play sufficient man coverage) is enough to continue building upon the current success that we've seen lately.

If Talib wants to play out the year and he produces a great year, we have to offer him a competitive deal. We cannot let the ghost of Hernandez handcuff wise personnel decisions.

The Talib decision has to be based on its own merits. And if he performs, I hope the payment decision is based on rational analysis. Right now, Talib is very important to this team and the kind of player I would pay.

I don't understand your thinking that players who play sufficient man coverage comparable to Talib can be drafted by the Patriots or easily found on the market. You have no understanding of the Patriots history of drafting defensive backs.

We have a legit coverage guy for the first time since Samuel, and he might be better. And there are fans who are ready to flippantly get rid of him. Unbelievable. He's made our defense much, much better. Reiss has a great piece explaining this. Re-sign Talib. He's proving his worth.

Talib has decided to gamble on himself and getting the big payday at the end of the year - but i'm sure that he is still open to renegotiation.

The threat of season ending injuries is real (see Nick Mangold's 'tackle') - its certainly no sure thing that he will be healthy when he is trying to negotiate this mega pay deal.

If the last few years has taught us anything it is that some positions on the field have extra importance - a CB capable of keeping the oppositions No.1 WR in check is priceless - the trickle down effect can be felt everywhere from the pass rush to even the offense (who now don't have to score 30 points every week to win).

Cromartie is about as big of a douche as we have in todays NFL, but he is hugely valuable to what Rex Ryan is able to do on defense.

Supafly, It seems your strategy is to take things that work, let them go, and bank on the team's scouting process to efficiently replace those things. That sounds fine historically for positions like OL, but for CB that is a ridiculous stance to take.

yes, a 4-5 year deal for boatload of cash please

He keeps getting these INTs and he is going to get a big pay day from some team

Do you have the link to that? I didn't see it in the offseason, so I am curious as to the details of the report (everything I read said 1-year offer by Pats due to concerns associated with Talib).

If he got a reasonable multi-year deal and rejected it, then he is going for a major payday and will be gone given the history of every good cornerback on the Pats who chose that path over the past 10 years. Under the traditional approach, the flexibility Talib gives the defense will not be worth losing several players at other positions due to resulting cap limitations. And short of an extension that matches a large multi-year deal, there would be no reason for Talib to agree if that was his mindset in rejecting a proposal.

His 4 years of problems will likely not be completely shaken after 1 solid season. However, if he has a good year some team will pay him. I agree the Hernandez issue will shake the Pats' willingness to roll the dice on a long-term deal. The only way I see him staying is if he feels gratitude at his resurgence, likes his situation on the Pats and is willing to forgo a bigger contract elsewhere.

Absolutely, and it's not just some quirk of the Patriots that finding CBs of Talib's caliber is a challenge for them. (Consider: Talib was drafted higher than any Patriots DB has been since Roland James back in 1980.)

A long time extension attempt would be a no brainer if Talib was baggage free. Talib has proven to be a good to very good CB but the Pats front office may be a bit leery given the (undeserved, IMO) criticism for drafting/extension of Hernandez.

Personally I like to see him signed long term but I won't rake the front office over the coals if Talib eventually signs elsewhere because they decided to take a one season at a time approach.

I think people underestimate a players desire to play for a certain team that is a good fit. Over and over, we hear they are going to break the bank, we can't sign them because of their market value etc. and over and over, the player and team quietly agree to contracts while still maintaining the overall salary structure about as well as anyone.

Ninkovich gone, Vollmer gone, other important players signed early to assure they stay. Players that are worth big contracts have the choice of compromising to play where they want, or maximizing every last cent and possibly being miserable. It's not just the Patriots by the way, players want to play for good organizations with team mates and coaches who are winners.

Having said that, Talib seems to be extremely happy and involved and working as hard as anyone this off season. Sure, he could be a phony like Adalius Thomas, but it sure doesn't seem so.

Sometimes the right answer is the corny one; he was miserable at T Bay, he is happy as hell to be here. The team is happy as hell to have him. A deal will be made and the money will be found by juggling or cutting elsewhere. When team and player want to make a long term deal a way is found.

I predict they sign him before the season's out.

Hate to play psychologist, but I think it would mean a lot more to him if the team comes to him, than he goes on the auction block.

McCourty will get an extensions before Talib

i hope they can keep him somehow. if they have to overpay a little, go for it. the difference in the secondary with him in it, is like night and day.

If he keeps his nose clean this season, sure. If you mean now, I'd rather wait and make him behave to get a payday. (Remember, he has off field "issues.")

What other option do we have?

First of all, let's try and show some respect. Stating that I "have no understanding of the Patriots history of drafting defensive backs" is really classless, not to mention completely untrue. You have no idea what my knowledge of anything is, and I've never once made any comments that would show any lack of understanding about anything.

Second of all, their drafting woes have improved with the recent additions of McCourty and Dennard, not to mention that the draft is hardly the ONLY way to acquire players. Was Talib drafted here? No. Just because Belichick has had drafting issues with CB's doesn't mean that we're automatically screwed. I never mentioned drafting anyone anyway, so you obviously mis-read the intent of my post. We've had drafting woes at WR, yet have been able to remain very competitive with our scheme, so the thinking was that may be explored with a player of Talib's caliber. I hardly see any strange thinking there.

Stating that it may be a reasonable option to continue our more aggressive man coverage scheme without paying ridiculously overboard amounts at a position that Belichick typically refuses to pay overboard at (there's a little "understanding" for YOU), is hardly stating anything controversial.

The odds of being able to retain Talib on an expensive multi year deal when they went to him with a multi year deal in the offseason probably aren't too good, so my other option is something that you may want to start to get used to thinking about. Belichick could very well bring in another comparable man coverage CB at a lesser cost and still have an effective scheme.

You're talking about a player who has yet to once complete an entire season when the games count most (at the end) in his 6 yr career due to the same two nagging injuries of hip and hamstring issues, coupled with off the field concerns and suspensions. You are a lot closer to the one who lacks sufficient understanding if you think that Bill Belichick is going to fall over himself by attempting to back up the Brinks truck..

FWIW--Ben Volin reports today that there's no way Talib is willing to take a lower than market value, so there's something to keep in mind when you're calling others out for their "lack of understanding."
