Where is this guy? I haven't seen him on the field. Was there an injury I didn't hear about ?

He's seeing a little time on defense and playing a ton on STs.

He's a raw but extremely talented player who is making a position change. You can't expect him to be ready right away.

I'd like to see him in there on 3rd downs at least. Maybe used as a speciality rusher.

Michael Buchanan (7th rd pick) has already seen a lot more playing time than Jamie Collins.

Hightower has been playing next to Mayo in the nickel and 3rd downs. Hightower has consistently been the best LB on the field. Spikes hasn't even gotten much playing time.

That's because Buchanan is practicing as a DE. Collins already has enough on his plate being converted to OLB. All the reports out of camp were that he was doing no extra pass rush drills, just everything with the linebackers.

Could his lack of playing time maybe just be because he's not that good?

Who are they taking off the field for him to pass rush? Ninkovich?

No clue why you threw out the 7th round pick thing. They want Collins to be a LB. Buchanan's role is strictly an edge rusher.

And also let's be clear if Buchanan didn't get a broken jaw and lose weight that resulted in a down year last year he might have went as high as the 2nd round.

I think it has more to do with the rotation being extremely tight so far, this is the only subbing:

~ Vellano subs in for Kelly every 3rd series at LDT.
~ Vellano subs in for Wilfork every 4th series at RDT.
~ Buchanan subs in at RDE, Jones slides inside to RDT, Wilfork slides over to LDT and Kelly comes out of the game in pass rush situations.
~ Dennard subs in at RCB, Arrington moves to the star/slot CB, and Spikes comes out of the game in sub-packages.

Other than that its basically been:

~ Harmon in for 8 snaps to replace Gregory when he was injured against the Jets.
~ Collins in for 2 snaps when Hightower moved to MLB when Spikes was injured against the Bills.
~ Collins in for 4 snaps against the Jets and 2 snaps against the Bills in short yardage situations.
~ Ryan in for 2 snaps against the Bills when we were in a dime package.
~ Wilson in for 1 snap in them money position 1on1 vs. Scott Chandler against the Bills.

This is a nice luxury for a rookie, they do not need to rush him.. as the season progresses, you will see him more.

Too often have we seen rookies have difficulty with the Pats schemes...

Another ******* bust, fire this Belichick bum.

Collins certainly has the measurables to be a 3rd down rusher. He played DE in his senior year and has experience as a pass rusher.

I'm surprised to see Buchanan being used in that role over Collins. That's all.

Wilfork.

On 3rd down packages they are taking Wilfork off, moving Chandler Jones to DT, and bringing Buchanan in at DE.

How do you think Jones and Buchanan were on the field at the same time for that sandwich-sack-penalty in the Jets game.

A pass rushing LB? An OLB who moves to DE on 3rd downs? The fact is, we don't know what kind of LB the coaching staff wants him to be.

He hasn't even been given the chance to rush on 3rd downs.... the 7th rounder Buchanan has (and is doing a good job).

A lot of players that were DEs in college become LBs in the pros due to size, length, technique reasons. I don't think Collins is a DE in any of our schemes. Plus, Buchanan is playing incredibly well. Should we just play guys based on name/draft value?

Very few college DEs become 4-3 OLBs, though. That's a tough conversion.

Collins is roughly the same size as Ninkovich..... and much more athletic.

Collins is even a little bit bigger than Von Miller, who has had a lot of success as a 3rd down pass rusher.

Nope. Buchanan has done a decent job so far.

It's just disappointing to see this years first draft pick get leapfrogged by a 7th rounder for a role they were both competing for.

There has been no indication at all that Collins was competing for that role. Yes, he has the physical ability to do so should they want to put that on his already very full plate of things to learn.

Sciz we'd be ignorant to think that the coaching staff never tried him as a pass rusher considering they drafted him based on his tape as a DE and he worked out at the Combine as a DE.

He did not participate in any pass rush drills during training camp.

That said, it would be a tremendous waste of talent to not use Collins as a pass rushing outside linebacker. You have to assume that's the plan, and they are just trying to ease him into a versatile role by only using him in coverage.

If they were going to try him as a pass rusher, then people would've seen it happen at camp. It didn't.

And technically, he was in the OLB group at the combine. The team got to see him put through LB drills. He also played linebacker in college, although back in 2010.
