From all of the speculative media reports, it seems that many feel that Allen is not as good as Mesko, especially with his struggles with directional punting and pinning opponents inside of the 20--which Mesko was very good at; but the decision to save 1 million dollars was worth taking a gamble on.

My biggest concern is the place kicking/holding factor, so hopefully we don't have too many issues with that aspect too.

Also Mesko was obviously a FA after this season and we'd have to have made a very tough business decision where we may not have had a viable replacement like Allen after the year was over. On top of that we'd be dealing with David Dunn and Athlete's first, and after the rough Welker negotiations and the strong armed refusal to pay Aaron Hernandez (Dunn's biggest 2 clients from NE), we may have had enough from him at the moment.

Punting on 4th down is overrated. Convert the 4th down. That's BB's next great contribution to the NFL. Four downs every series. Take that league. :rocker:

What move of the cutdown to 53 made you not too happy today or in the previous days in total?

I was personally most disappointed in these players:

Ras-I Dowling
Jake Ballard
Adrian Wilson

I had aspirations for all 3 for the 2013 season and it was unfortunate that health appears to be the downfall of all 3 of them. As they say though “next man up”.

I hated losing a guy named Zoltan, otherwise it all seemed pretty reasonable to me.

Not much.Mesko is a sad cut. Otherwise Iam just as worried about our pass defense and pass rush as last year which is not a good sign if doesnt improve this yr.

One of my major concerns as well. I am not comfortable we improved either.
The next 7 days maybe someone else's cast off.

Mesko getting cut just seems like a "cheap" shot to save a few bucks. No real reason to cut the guy. As others have said I thought Gostowski deserved to be challenged more than Mesko. The first time the new guy flubs a snap and either misses a punt, or we miss a FG in a close game, I will be thinking "karma."

Edit - I wasn't aware Zoltan was a free agent next year and that he has Welker's agent. Now at least I understand a little more why the Pats made this move.

My immediate thoughts were that the Pats may be eager to avoid the same thing that happened with Vinatieri when they cut a very promising rookie kicker in Gould and then lost Vinatieri the next year.

It was a shocker for most of us, but it saved approx. 1 million dollars, so I wouldn't exactly say "damn, that sucks!"

Probably just as importantly, we now don't have to deal with Mesko being a FA next season as he was represented by Athlete's first and David Dunn (Welker and Hernandez).

Allen beat Mesko out for the job.

relying on castoffs to improve the team from an yr is not a good sign. The best bet is our rookies from last yr and this yr start playing at a high level.Especially if chandler jones can become a premier pass rusher and someone like collins/buchanan can step up we will be improved.

Not me. I'd have liked him to have had more burst than he did. But he didn't.

I can understand Winn and Sims losing out to other good players, much though I liked them.

And, if it's true that they were worried about re-signing Mesko, I see what is going on there.

But now they've come up with one to bum me out. Marquice Cole, of all people! Seemed he had finally "got" how to play pass coverage. Since when did the Patriots ever have a surplus of DBs who could play on special teams?
