Post Game Thought - the car industry isn't the only thing struggling in Detriot ed.

Re: Post Game Thought - the car industry isn't the only thing struggling in Detriot e

Perhaps disaster is too strong a word. He isn't that good, though he does tackle well. Problem the Patriots have is depth at CB.

I think his coverage has been pretty good this preseason. Won't be confused with Revis by any stretch, but for a #2 CB he is playing well. I cannot think of a single play off hand where he was burnt this preseason.

Re: Post Game Thought - the car industry isn't the only thing struggling in Detriot e

Usually I get very anxious as the cut down date approaches and I'm rooting for binks, training camp faves and dark horse 53 candidates. Hate to see talent with potential cut. But not this year after that debacle as defensive players ran about all in the wrong places flailing their arms attempting to waive down opponents as opposed to actually tackling them, like in football. Too many players hoping to make the 53 completely crapped out on defense. It will be a stress free cutdown date por moi. I fully expect BB to cut down below 53 and look for bottom of the roster upgrades from others' squads.

DT depth, OL depth, CB depth, anybody who has a clue about where to be at safety, all candidates for upgrade. Some discard somewhere has to have one more season in the tank.

*Adrian Wilson looked abysmal tonight.

While I agree with much of your post, I have to go with BB's remark here that if you don't know the scheme, you don't know who screwed up.

Matt Chatham was talking about Adrian Wilson in the second quarter - I was in the other room so I only caught part of it. The gist, though, was that the Pats had moved Wilson up and put him one-on-one with Bush as an adjustment to the gashing they had taken earlier. MT seemed impressed.

So I don't know what to believe.

One thing, though, Reggie Bush is going to be a great signing for Detroit if he stays healthy. The guy's got more moves than Ex-Lax and seems to be coming into his own. Out in space, he's one of the scarier players in the league. Miami will miss him.

In any case, it's pre-season. One team went there with something to prove, maybe to sell some tickets. The other team went there with 60,000 people on the waiting list for tickets, and looked like they didn't want to get hurt. Better to lay the egg now than in the first game.

My big take-away was KT. I'd never heard of the guy, but the people on the board trumping him when the Pats brought him in nailed it. What a steal!

And the 1st Team D did little to tamper my expectations. They were missing their best player (Vince, of course), had to shift their nickle to the outside as their number 2 and 3 (outside) CB's weren't playing, and found their backs to the wall almost every time they got on the field. Three fumbles and a pick, with three of the turnovers putting the Lions in or near the red zone, and Detroit got a total of 13 points off them. That's pretty good.

One blown play - the Bush screen, and the culprit was Mayo (Bush just took him out of his shoes). That won't happen much - is anyone worried about Mayo, really?

I made the mistake of posting that after reading jets insider.

I'm referring more to his horrendous tackling than anything else.

This. Plus, there's not much concern about a second team defense looking terrible as a unit when they will never play together as a unit.

Someone made an earlier post about the Lions being more emotionally into the game than the Pats, as if the game outcome mattered to them, while the Pats were there for a practice. Seems right.

Re: Post Game Thought - the car industry isn't the only thing struggling in Detriot e

Starting defense showed a lot of guts today, playing without their best player and getting put in a lot of tough situations. To keep the game even close in the first half was a good showing.

The DEPTH on defense is concerning, at just about every position. The only argument that can be made is at LB, where I feel like Fletcher and Ninko could fill in for an injury, but in Nink's case that then weakens DE (which again, has little depth at the moment).

The rookies played like rookies. We've been spoiled thus far with how polished the offense has looked despite the turnover, I think this was a nice splash of cold water. These kids are going to make mistakes, and I'm glad it's started early. Give Bill some time to work on them.

I think the KR/PR game is hard to judge right now. I don't recall Washington returning a kick (some punts, but no kicks) nor Edelman return a punt yesterday. I think they feel comfortable with those two in those particular roles, and want to see where the rest of the depth chart lies. I also think that, should Edelman be injured and we're in an important game, Amendola will return punts. There's just no reason to expose him to that in preseason.

Overall, a humbling thumping, and unfortunately we won't get much to encourage us in week 4, meaningless as it will be. Looking ahead to the Bills now, the Pats have two weeks to get these kids back on track.

Re: Post Game Thought - the car industry isn't the only thing struggling in Detriot e

post game thoughts:

Brady was sharp, but threw a really silly interception, and almost got an intentional grounding in the endzone.

The recievers must have been playing toss the butter before the game because none of them could catch the ball consistently.

The running backs excluding blount are in some seriously deep **** come practice. vereen and boldon with fumbles, riddley completely ineffective.

Stud was mia after that fumble, would have liked to see more of him, see if he can erase a bad play from his memory and get back to it.

Leon Washington cant seem to get out of his own way returning kicks so much so that i think blount had better return numbers last night, but i havn't checked.

The first string defense played admirably considering every 12 seconds they were put into an almost 1st and goal situation and only gave up 16 points by halftime.

Re: Post Game Thought - the car industry isn't the only thing struggling in Detriot e

--Still not looking too good at either one of PR or KR despite all of the hype that we've been hearing about the infamous Leon Washington

Peculiar how that "infamous" KR was strictly returning punts, while the gunner and a 250-lb. RB were returning kickoffs. It seemed like the return game was focused on giving backups some live reps.

It seemed like late in the second half when Anthony Rashad White came in that the defense became less of a sieve. Did anyone watch him specifically? The guy is a monster of man.

I agree, he seems to be buried deep on the depth chart but every time he comes into a game he shows well.

Washington didn't return any kicks last night. He took some punts but that was it. You might be thinking of Slater who has always been an ineffective kick returner.

Re: Post Game Thought - the car industry isn't the only thing struggling in Detriot e

This thread seems to be a cathartic setting. May I join?

Some observations:

-As some have mentioned already, the Pats didn't play very emotionally like the Lion's did. This seemed to be their Superbowl. Playing without emotion seriously affects a team and places them at a disadvantage.

-The prior point is especially evident when Young taunted Brady and Brady looked back like "WTF? This is practice, man, practice"

-Detroit's O-line is reputedly not very good. This bears consideration when judging our front seven and their pass rush.

-Detroit's D-Line is stacked with high first round talent. This bears consideration when judging our O-line.

-Svitek - Don't be too quick to judge him. He's a valued backup swing tackle--not a guard. We don't have any other backup tackles outside of say Cannon that are currently competent/serviceable.

-Fumbles - better to get it out of our system now than later.

-Without Tebow playing, this makes me think he will not be on the team, but who knows. In fact, now I'm wondering about a lot of players I originally penciled in as near definites like Adrian Wilson. Safety is a disappointment next to McCourty. No wonder they drafted another safety and brought in a veteran this offseason.

-Based on other people's comments on Ballard, it's a shame. I am ambivalent about Gronk starting on PUP. I also don't want to cut Fells, a veteran, when we have so few veteran receiving targets. Perhaps it will be Gronk, Fells, and Sudfeld to start the year.

-Do we really keep a true fullback this year? This was his tryout. Not sure if he sticks.

-This offense badly needs a veteran like Amendola to help it along as the other new receiving targets gain experience.

Final Point: Sometimes when a team looks bad, EVERYONE looks bad. It's a team sport. At least there were some bright spots.

Re: Post Game Thought - the car industry isn't the only thing struggling in Detriot e

I imagine that BB secretly enjoys playing against the Lions in the preseason only because he know they will treat it like the superbowl, and he can then use the game as an annual wakeup call to jolt his team out of preseason mode.

Whenever Washington did run with the ball, however, he looked really slow.
If he runs this slowly now, how much slower will he be running in December?

So you're saying Washington is 100% not going to make the team?

I think it is an almost certainty that Gronk starts the season on the roster. They are going to need him as soon as possible on the team given the state of the TEs at this time. I also don't think it should be an issue as there is nobody at the bottom of the roster that looks like they would be a tough cut.
