Per Mike Loyko, NEPatriotsDraft.com:

According to his agent the #Patriots have signed former USF TE Evan Landi. 6'3" 240. More of an H-Back type. Ran a 4.87 at pro day.

Per Mike Reiss, espnBoston:

Patriots making back-end roster moves, agree with South Florida TE/H-back Evan Landi of South Florida, per agent @DavidCanter.

Patriots will have to make a roster move to create room on 90-man roster. Evan Landi was previously w/ Buccaneers but was waived in June.

Patriots depth chart at TE: Rob Gronkowski (PUP), Jake Ballard, Zach Sudfeld, Daniel Fells, Michael Hoomanawanui, Evan Landi.

At first glance Brandon Ford would appear to be a better option than Landi at TE. Maybe he's just someone brought in to play on special teams for preseason games to keep others out of harm's way.

Right now I'm more curious about who was cut.

You think they'd go to that much trouble for an exhibition game?

I doubt it's any trouble churning the bottom of the roster. Whether the moves have been coincidence or purposeful, I don't know, but what's there is there.

I am going to patiently wait for the INEVITABLE first post to propose that BB cut TT and use this guy for the QB3; after all we can't seem to kill the "use the DWARF Edeldude as a QB3" proposal that comes up every third TT thread ......

Being a USF fan, and current USF student, I can tell you Landi is a good player but his stats suck due to an inept coaching staff that was fired. Last year there was only 21 catches by 4 tight ends. Our staff couldn't coach, gameplan or call plays to save their lives and it led to all of them getting fired. Landi isn't the fastest but he is a decent blocker, reliable catcher with soft hands and knows how to get open in coverage. He, like Edelman, is a ex-QB turned WR/TE when the QB battle was won by current 49'ers player BJ Daniels.

I wouldn't expect Landi to make the 53, but he would be an excellent practice squad player and someone we could promote down the line.

Here is a highlight tape of him.

2nd former Buc signed this week, after signing a former Eagle prior to those practices/that game.

And it makes three former Bucs signed in less than two weeks

- OL Brice Schwab signed on August 2 (signed with Bucs April 28, cut July 31)

- CB LeQuan Lewis signed on August 12 (signed with Bucs October 2012, cut February 7)

- TE Evan Landi signed on August 13 (signed with Bucs April 28, cut June 4)

I believe that makes a total of seven former Bucs on the roster (LeGarrette Blount, Aqib Talib, Kyle Arrington, Niko Koutouvides), five of whom were there since Schiano became their head coach.

Re: Re: Patriots sign USF TE Evan Landi; (no word yet on who was cut)

I'm sure the rookie learned a lot of info in mini camp.

Oh but whats there is there.

Youd think if Belichick wanted to win that badly in a preseason game he'd just keep Brady in for an extra series.

Or just keep his eyes open during joint practices.

Partiots signed TE Evan Landi

Not sure who got cut, or IR'd.

Re: Partiots signed TE Evan Landi

Wonder if this is a sign ...

Jason Vega ?@VegaJason 1h

Everything happens for a reason...or so I'm told.

Too bad, didn't Vega play well in that game?

Not well enough, apparently.

It's too bad he got caught in the scramble to replace Brandon Ford.

Wow! Landi played QB and WR prior to making the conversion to TE. This is similar to Jamie Collins coming with experience as a DB early in his college career.

You know what this means, don't you? Well, don't you?

It means the Patriots can cut...wait for it...Julian Edelman and get a 6-4 version of a smurf slot receiver, kick returner, emergency QB.

Careful now. Us Edelman lovers aren't as numerous as the Tebots but we are just as vociferous!

Vega got picked up by the Cowboys. He's shown on the cover of today's Houston Chronicle sports page playing against the Texans. Glad he's gotten another shot.
