Fawn - as always, good to see you. It is funny that you bring up Curtis Painter.

Who was the only quarterback in 2011 that led the league in 3 and outs more than Tim Tebow? The answer, shockingly, was Curtis Painter.
The funny part is just after I posted this, Painter makes his Giants debut against the Steelers. lol He almost gets sacked, and the dude who laid the hit on him gets carted off. A charmed life Painter leads.

I don't understand all the Tebow hate around here. He's not here to start. He's here to compete for the third string QB spot.

And if you are going to carry a third string QB on your team, you probably want one who might be able to contribute on special teams or serve as a receiving or RB option on a key first down, trick play or or goal line play with Brady under center.

Why everyone thinks that's a bad thing I can't understand. Didn't he have over 30 yards on 4 carries last night? That's really not bad folks.

JoeSixPat - Some of us have been evaluating and offering a NO BS opinion on Tebow. That is at least the second time I have seen you make statements about some of us who have made an effort to evaluate the current 3rd string quarterback of the Patriots. As far as I am concerned, Tebow has two more games until he is at risk of being cut. It is what it is.

......with a pretty high degree of accuracy in high school and college.

And then along came the NFL.

Yeah, that it did. He has his moments, but he's highly inconsistent to say the least.

Belichick, I'm going to be very candid here. I think this is a large part of the problem. The reality is, whether you know it / realize it or not, you usually AREN'T offering a "NO BS" opinion on Tebow.

Go look at Joker's breakdowns of Tebow's play. Those things are "NO BS". Now compare them to your posts. The difference is night and day.

Something that you might have noticed is that people don't take issue with Joker's criticisms of Tebow, while a number of people take issue with most of your posts. There's something to be learned there.

Belichick will make the call when/if deemed necessary. What bothers me the most is the Jets Insider type hate against fellow posters around here lately. Please, lets not go there. I hate JI and GG as I'm sure the rest of us do. TT's here till they let him go. Deal with it. Let the Jest fans implode.

Ok Demos - You are right and I am wrong. You win and I lose. You know everything and I clearly know nothing.

I like Tebow but I'll say he did mostly bad last night without question. That's about as unbiased as I can get. There are very few unbiased people when it comes to Tebow. Which is weird for a guy who won't play a meaningful snap for this team in all likelihood.

I'll make a NO BS observation on Tebow's play. He sucks as an NFL quarterback. In three years in the NFL he has never shown the ability to either read a defense or deliver the ball to the receiver on a consistent basis. In three years he has a starting record of 9-7 with a completion % of 47.9. And with being sacked in those three years 41 times (he was sacked in the 2011 33 times in 11 starts) he holds the ball in the pocket too long. One of two things happens when he holds the ball this long. Protection breaks down and he runs for his life. Or Coverage breaks down and he delivers a crappy pass that may end up in the dirt or his receivers hands. More often than not, it's the dirt. I don't hate the guy, I just don't get what the fascination is with him. He's Blaine Gabbert with a loyal following.

It is difficult for us to evaluate Tebow's performance unless we have some agreement on the parameters.

He isn't a HUGE failure and bust if his only purpose was to divert the world from other patriot PR issues and to maybe, just perhaps allow Josh to develop a player to compete with Mallett, with the idea of moving one of them next season. Josh has his right to toys and to bring in his own, especially to a 90 man roster. He brought in Lloyd and Salas last year.

I don't see how discussing whether Tebow is ready to compete for a starting job in the NFL is really relevant. The reality is that no team, not one, was willing to give Tebow that opportunity.

My position is clear on the quarterback position. I would rather have kept Hoyer and paid him, rather than give up a 3rd for the second time in the last few years. Personally, I don't know whether signing Tebow is an admittance of failure with Mallett or a hope that we can trade Mallett, or both.

What I DO KNOW is that Tebow has shown me no reason to want to have him on the 53 man roster. I suppose that he could be inactive and carry Brady's clipboard. Actually, I don't recall if an inactive player is allowed on the sidelines.

HOWEVER, in the end, we will carry several developmental players who are likely to be inactive in every game, or at best be active to play special teams. Tebow could be kept as a developmental player. Personally, that wouldn't be my choice.

Re: Should Tebow be cut?

If they wanted someone to just be a camp arm, why not bring in Peter Lalich? Sure he's been a bit of an idiot in the past, but if it was just to fill the roster why not give him a shot.

There again, I don't think even the terrible teams have given him a shot so he's got no chance at all in the league thanks to his previous idiocy.

We had Kafka as a camp arm. He ran the offense that was developed for Brady. The receivers would have gotten real practice from a quarterback running the same plays as they might be called on to perform should they make the team. Not so with Tebow, who has his own set of plays.

One thought I have is that (and this is perhaps too optimistic of me and/or BB) but if we do get far in the playoffs this year, we most likely will face San Francisco in the big game. And what do they run? The option offense. What better way to familiarize ourselves with that but by having the 3rd QB run it once in a while in practice?

Another is that, by having him deploy in the option offense, we are at least forcing Buffalo to have to game plan for that.

Also he is naturally not going to get in trouble, and will not speak out of turn so- not a bad choice for a camp arm.

Why did they sign him? why not? Same reason they signed a lot of the other 89. he's available and cheap.

the Patriots on Tuesday made the Tebow signing official, NFL.com's Albert Breer and Ian Rapoport reported that the quarterback inked a two-year contract worth the veteran minimum that includes zero guaranteed money and has incentives in 2014 based solely on playing time.

Yeah, I've heard the saying. Good thing you weren't my football coach the last year I played. I hurt my foot the day before spring tryouts and I didn't do all that well. Was in the last 1/3rd of the group in the mile run and didn't do all that well in the wind sprints or gassers.

Next day, I returned to camp with my foot in a cast. Seems that I had broken 4 metatarsals the day before camp. Luckily for me I guess, my coach saw that as a reason for not doing to well the day before, as opposed to an "excuse".

He's had 12 days of camp. Pretty sure that actual practices didn't start until day 3. It would be different if we were talking about a few years ago before the new CBA rules.

G. Smith had an 86% completion percentage in his first ever preseason game. Guess that isn't a universal learning curve you're suggesting.

Believe it or not, I actually agree with much of what you said. He does hold the ball in the pocket too long. He has trouble seeing open receivers. His mechanics are very inconsistent and he needs a lot of work on reading defenses.

Thing is though, all of those things are coachable and aside from his time with Josh in 2010, I'm not at all impressed by any of the coaches that he's had since that time.

IF you will, Alex Smith had 5 or 6 seasons in the NFL and looked terrible. He finally got a good coach and wouldn't you know, he turned into a more than decent QB.

Aaron Rodgers is another example that many aren't really aware of. In his first 2 seasons in Green Bay, he looked absolutely terrible in camp, in preseason games, and the few times that he came in during the regular season. It wasn't until Mike McCarthy took over as the coach that things changed with Rodgers. He did pretty well in his 3rd preseason and then did really well during the season when he came in.

I just want to see what happens with Tebow in a similar situation, with good coaches who are actually working hard to try and develop him.

Maybe he'll wash out and be on the lecture circuit shortly thereafter. Or maybe, just maybe, he might end up being a good QB.

Wasting a roster spot seems an extreme position. The 90th roster spot isn't worth much to us. If Tebow could have looked really good in a couple of preseason games, perhaps we could have traded him.

Great point on him being worthy of a roster spot. I admittedly was less than impressed with Tebow last night but I do like the fundamental decision to sign him as the 3rd string QB for camp. I think he adds a different component for our defense to have to practice against, that in itself is worthy of a spot on the 90 in my opinion.

No offense, but your comparing, basically, their staring QB to our 3rd string "QB".

Ah yes, the old "Bill Belichick is totally the type of guy to waste a roster space and development time to help Josh prove that the player he drafted for another team was worth the pick" line of reasoning.

Your analytical skills are simply breathtaking.
He hasn't wasted a roster spot on him yet idiot. 90 man roster doesn't mean much.

No he's taking his point that little Timmy has only had 8 practices and destroying it. Tebow has been in the league for years. No excuse to be utterly clueless like he is. This isn't the eighth time Timmy has picked up a football which is what it looked like.

my personal opinion: I say keep him and develop him.

Tom Brady Has Enjoyed Playing with Tim Tebow, Thinks Backup Quarterback Has Done ?Good Job? | New England Patriots | NESN.com

small except from article: “He’s been on a few different teams. He’s run some different style offenses. He’s done a good job,” Brady said. “He’s come in here and Josh [McDaniels] has had some familiarity with him, coaching him in Denver. He’s come in and just tried to do the best that he can do.”

C with all do respect Brady doesn't have a bad thing to say about anyone, he didn't even speak poorly of Hernandez after Hernandez allegedly murdered someone. Tebow is a nice guy and a hard worker there really isn't any one arguing against that, he just doesn't seem to capable of playing QB in the NFL, and 4 years into his career you're really past that developmental stage, especially when you were a 1st round draft pick.
