I like this hire. A young teacher for a team rebuilding. His first year will be brutal, but hopefully he will be here for years and they get a little lucky in the draft.

given that it's a small school that nobody had heard of 10 years ago, and they don't have the scandals (yet?) that we regularly hear about in college sports, isn't reaching the finals -- two years in a row -- worthy of respect?

nobody knows anything about him as an NBA coach, but he's extremely well know and well regarded among the college basketball ranks

No idea how he'll pan out, but I like this move more than hiring Scott Skiles or another NBA coaching re-tread.

I'm intrigued except for how will he handle Rondo?

I hope he works out but college coaches have a lousy track record when they become nba coaches. time will tell. rondo will be gone soon because he will eat this guy alive.

That is my question, however Rondo's tenure may be short lived...

This is and intriguing hire, certainly breaks the mold... time will tell. Personally getting tired of the same old, same old...

You have to believe Rondo will be traded. He's always been discussed in past trades, he's the only real bargaining chip, and it is questionable whether his playing equals the headaches he brings to the table. Now, they have a new, young, head coach and I'm not sure the Celtics will take a wait and see approach. Too bad #1 picks don't mean success in the NBA, because they have a bunch and could acquire a few for Rondo.

The graveyard of discarded NBA coaches is chock full of guys who were phenomenal in the college ranks, only to fail miserably in the pros. None other than Rick Pitino leads that motley crew.

I want this hiring to succeed. I really do. But I have little faith it will.

I was hoping they would go after a nba assistant coach. not a retread but a coach with nba exp. somebody who knows the league and what hes getting into. like what Chicago did. hiring thibideau a long time assistant coach getting his first head coaching job. the more I think on dannys choice the more I don't like it.

Pitino is a terrible example. Before the NBA he made the Final Four one time out of Providence because he had Billy Donovan on his team. Brad Stevens made two different NCAA championship games and he didn't rely on one rare player, he did it with different rosters which is amazing for a mid-major school with no 4 star or 5 star recruits. Pitino's style is also not ideal for pros since he loves the traps and full court press. Pitino's style was more suited for college, plus he had less achievements before he went to the NBA. In contrast, Brad Stevens is known as a strong innovator especially in the half court defensive game.

Finally, look at the list of Boston Celtics young coaches. It's a very good list. Auerbach, Bill Russell, Heinson, there is a good legacy of young coaches coming in and doing a good job for the Celtics franchise

Regardless of the coach, this team doesn't have the players to compete anyway. The East is Miami's for at least another 3 or 4 years anyway, and Red Auerbach himself couldn't coach this team with the players they currently have (or don't have.)

And then he went to Kentucky where he went to 3 Final Fours, including 1 National Championship, before coming to Boston with more pomp and circumstance than you normally see given to royalty.

You seem not to realize that Pitino has been to the Final Four 7 times with 3 teams, including 2 National Championships. So you look foolish to suggest that his only college success came because of Billy Donovan. (Funny you should mention Billy Donovan... another great college coach, only he was smart enough to know he would suck at the professional level so he bailed out on the Magic 5 days after taking that job)

This paragraph, while true, has absolutely nothing to do with the issue at hand. I can't remember... did Danny Ainge hire Aurebach, Russell or Heinson?

With Rondo on the team, they're still good enough where they won't have a top 5 pick in the draft. Having Rondo doesn't make much sense if your goal is to develop young talent while losing, for him or for the team. You figure he'd much rather play for a winner and the team would rather have Bradley get more playing time.

Excellent college coach but he's going to have his hands full in his first couple of seasons in Boston. If I'm Ainge, I look for any way possible to deal Rondo's punk ass. Having him on the team will only make Stevens' job that much harder as the team rebuilds.

I agree with this. If you're going to be bad, you may as well be REALLY bad. I'd honestly rather win 18 games than 30.

Sure - someone like Shaw could have been good if the timing had worked.

Hopefully he can get an experienced NBA guy for his staff.
