T.J. Moe thread

Belichick will absolutely cut a ST player if he can find a position player that also plays ST at a high level.

Slater is a top 5 ST, easily. There is absolutely no way he gets cut.

If Moe can learn the playbook and he has decent quickness, then I think he makes the team.

Maybe they can trade Slater if he's so valuable. What's the drop off between Slater and just a random special teamer?

Also Boyce might end up on PUP, which would be bad. I think there's a chance Gronkowski and Hernandez end up there as well.

Pretty significant, actually.

this thread is pretty hilarious. Looking for reasons to cut contributing members of the team and some of the best special teamers in the NFL to give a roster spot to a backup slot receiver who's never played a down in the NFL?

I certainly am not advocating for slater to be cut for a udrfa. Just pointing out that special teams ace is pretty far down the list when trying to determine who fills out the roster and the next guy up could give more n positional need without much dropoff on the st side

As far as I'm concerned Slaters and Washingtons contributions on special teams far outweigh any potential Moe would have sitting on the bench as a possible replacement to Amendola. He's strictly a slot guy whereas players like Boyce and Edleman can play both inside and outside. He's a good candidate for the practice squad but I see no reason for him to be on the 53 unless he's competing for snaps on offense.

Tell that to the coach who routinely keeps four or five guys on the game-day roster who play almost exclusively on STs—and that's NOT counting Aiken, Gostkowski, and Mesko.

First, starters can and do play special teams. I would not be shocked if a starter or second teamer managed to take slaters spot. Its about how much value one player brings. Do jot assume that a new guy cannot take a roster spot from an exisitng player.

Never understood why ST guys get valued so highly. So without the stellar play of Slater the punt defense would give up 6.5 yards instead of 6? Is that a game changer? Need new blood in the WR corps..if someone goes down and Moe has been cut and signed to someone else's squad, then that's a big loss.

True. Mallett might end up being better than Brady, too.

I would think the difference between Brady and Mallett is larger than the difference between Slater and Moe on ST, at least as far as how it affects the WL record.

Hyperbole. Point is people predict Slater's demise on a yearly basis, and it never happens (for good reason, I might add).

Nice hyperbole. It isn't out of the realm of possibility that somebody on the team or just added to the team could make Slater's lose his job. We aren't talking about a hall of fame player here, we are talking about a guy who is good at being a gunner. Lets not forget that Slater could come in and physically not be able to do the job anymore, special teams gunner is a job for the young, Slater is getting up there in years (late 20s).

heh, funny that you would say that. Slater WILL lose his job at some point, probably sooner than later, you can count on that....this could be the year.

We're talking about perhaps the second best special teamer in the league.

Sure, it's not impossible, but he's as close to a lock as you can get for a STOP.

That applies to at least half the roster.

According to some of the current projections, the WR corp would be:
Danny Amendola, Aaron Dobson, Julian Edelman, Donald Jones, Josh Boyce, Matthew Slater

IF TJ Moe is all that, I wouldn't be surprise if he takes Edelman's or Jones spot. Both Edelman and Jones contracts are low risk and have no guarantee money, and Edelman's contract is only for one year. So it didn't seem like BB had that much expectations for Edelman when resigning him.
