already a thread on this over in the draft section... but Honey Badger don't care. :rocker:

Re: The New England Patriots Are Interested In Drafting Exiled LSU Prospect Tyrann Ma

I don't normally say this, but what a misleading title. The Pats are just doing their due diligence. They're also visiting with Marcus Lattimore.

Re: The New England Patriots Are Interested In Drafting Exiled LSU Prospect Tyrann Ma

Not sure if the Pats are interested. But if he falls after the third round, I'd damn sure hope they would be interested. I'd love to see him in the slot physically brutalizing slot receivers.

Re: The New England Patriots Are Interested In Drafting Exiled LSU Prospect Tyrann Ma

-The Patriots have a heavy bias towards SEC prospects.

-The Patriots have already taken a chance on two "troubled" cornerbacks in the past 12 months: Dennard and Talib.

-About 15 other teams have also worked out Mathieu.

-We know absolutely nothing more than we did before. The Patriots didn't even work out Solder because they were so sure they wanted him (or maybe they did in stealth mode a day or two before the draft.) They may have an "undraftworthy" grade on Mathieu and are thinking about whether they would call him as a UDFA. Bottom line is that they evaluate many, many prospects, which doesn't mean they have a lot of interest.

Re: The New England Patriots Are Interested In Drafting Exiled LSU Prospect Tyrann Ma

I would love to see the percentages of players we've drafted that the team has met with prior to the draft.

Going on nothing but my memory, for whatever that is worth, I'd be surprised if 50% of our round 1-3 picks were players the team had met with.

One thing to remember with in-house visits ... Clubs generally bring in either the elite, or guys who have injury and/or character questions

Media: "Patriots interesting in drafting (insert annual player here)" :blahblah:

=

NO CHANCE the Pats actually end up drafting him and instead draft Joe WTF Shmoe

This is what I was thinking. How many times have we drafted somebody after they were personally mentioned on our 'interest list'. Heck, I think last year was the first year since 2003 or so I could've guessed the POSITION they ended up going after first.

As much fun as that would be to see, I think that the money the Pats gave to Arrington may end up precluding this. You can only have so many corners that can't match up outside, especially when you just gave one a four-year contract for more money than he's worth.

I know, BPA and all, and maybe Belichick's plan is to cut Arrington after a season if he drafts Mathieu and Mathieu turns out to be sane and as-advertised. I'd be surprised, though.

If he's still there after the third, he won't be there when we draft again in the seventh.

Is it just me or is Mathieu only a Special Teams player in the NFL? I just can't see him covering 6'0+ WRs :/

Re: New England Patriots Are Interested In Drafting Exiled LSU CB Prospect Tyrann Mat

I am guessing that since the visit is so public, the chances that the Pats will actually draft him are slim.

There is this one thing called trading down to acquire more picks. Some teams have done it in the past.

He's a damn good special teams player - would project as one of the better ones in the league. He's also a playmaker on defense. forcing turnovers seems to come naturally too him. I certainly could see BB valuing both of those skillsets combined in the third round.

Re: New England Patriots Are Interested In Drafting Exiled LSU CB Prospect Tyrann Mat

Until someone shows me some other problems Dennard had during college, I'd suggest you'd use some other adjective to describe him other than "troubled". Unless you have led the "perfect" life. A single bar incident that spiraled into his court case, should NOT label someone as "troubled. Des Bryant is "troubled". Pac Man Jones was "troubled". You can even put Aquib Talib in that category, if you feel the need, but as far as I can see, not Alphonzo Dennard.

And if smoking weed is any indication of being "troubled". you'd have characterize three quarters of my entire generation as "troubled" (not myself though, but only because I couldn't master the skill of inhaling, and so I became doomed to be everyone's "straight friend" ) As far as I can see the only thing Mathieu has been guilty of is being stupid enough to keep on failing drug tests for weed. Smoking weed doesn't make you a bad person anymore than drinking beer. That is a hypocracy that really should end once and for all.

I am far more concerned about the "honey badger's" height, weight and relative lack of strength or remarkable speed and quickness. He was clearly an outstanding college DB, and played at a high level. So did Tim Tebow. Sometimes a great college career doesn't translate into a great pro one.

Personally I'm done with the Pats trying to work with midget DB's we have too many 5'10 guys as it is. From what I've been told, Mathieu would be looking up to Wes Welker. Dennard might be only 5'10, but he's a strong 200. He's the exception that proves the rule. We don't need to expand our midget DB's. What's Mathieu, 5'9 175, 180?. I don't care how effective he was in college, EVERY WR he'll play against in the NFL will be bigger, stronger, and in many cases faster and quicker.

If he were there in the 7th like Dennard was, he'd be a value pick. Other than that.....PASS....but not because he's "troubled".

Re: New England Patriots Are Interested In Drafting Exiled LSU CB Prospect Tyrann Mat

I definitely would not take him in the top 2 rounds. Around round 4 and later is when I might consider. 7th prefereable because of the character size issues. I think he has a good chance to be better than Arrington though and imo Arrington is overpaid. So if Honey Badger emerges as a late round success, we can shed Arrington's salary next season or the one after, and allocate that money for a better player or a different upgrade on defense.

If i recall correctly, the last 2 years it seems like almost all the guys pats ended up drafting were seen either combine, uni-school or in foxboro. A surprising nbr actually in foxboro. cant remember any numbers, but i recalll thinking it after last years draft that it was surprising.

Earlier on in BB's tenure he ran silent-ran deep; and you NEVER KNEW where he was going -if they worked someone out all swore a blood oath of secrecy.

Now i think he is being devious in the OTHER DIRECTION........ They work out EVERYONE.
