Re: Schefter: Wes Welker deal to Broncos nearly done

I heard it was as below

The #Broncos offered Wes Welker a four-year, $35 million contract.

That's a bargain compared to what Wallace/Harvin got. BB is out of his mind if he doesn't match this offer.

Re: Schefter: Wes Welker deal to Broncos nearly done

Not horrible, just under $ 9 million a year. I think we should match, if that is the offer.

It depends how much of it is guaranteed.

HA! Like that'll happen...

Re: Schefter: Wes Welker deal to Broncos nearly done

Welker isn't giving his team a chance to match the offer because he's classy, he's doing it because it's in his own best interest to see if he can stay in New England and get the money he wants. He shouldn't be faulted for doing what's in his own best interest, but he shouldn't be called classy for it either. If he'd rather be in Denver than New England, he wouldn't be giving New England the chance to match.

We'll find out soon, but all of these frantic agent-driven press releases sound like bluffs to me -- which is the surest way to get the Patriots to clam up and move on to Danny Amendola. If Welker really has $11 million on the table from Denver, and the Pats are at $8 million, there would be no point in him giving the Pats time to match.

I think Wes desperately wants to stay, but he doesn't want to take a dime less than market value. If that's where he's at, he's going to leave and join Ray Allen in the afterlife.

Re: Schefter: Wes Welker deal to Broncos nearly done

4 year/35m?? not bad. i'd pay him.

Re: Schefter: Wes Welker deal to Broncos nearly done

At 4/$35 million there's a chance the Pats make an attempt to keep him, but probably not. Depends on the guarantees and legitimacy of years 3, and certainly 4.

This entire episode wouldn't be an issue if the Patriots signed Welker last year for the 3 to 4 years and reported $18-20 million in guarantees he was looking for. Penny cheap and dollar foolish in the end.

Re: Schefter: Wes Welker deal to Broncos nearly done

Wouldn't pay that. Too many years at too much money

Hogwash. The years are basically illusory on the back end the money/year is below market.

No Thanks. I'd rather have a stud CB for that money.

Re: Schefter: Wes Welker deal to Broncos nearly done

The only way I'll be happy about Welker leaving is if we trade for Fitzgerald SOMEHOW. (Who I assume can restructure).

Re: Schefter: Wes Welker deal to Broncos nearly done

I guess Welker's agent (and Welker) can say goodbye to Belichick before flying to Denver.

That's not outrageous or anything and disagreeing with a decision not to match it is reasonable, but no one should get his/her panties in a wad or go into panic mode if they choose not to match it.

If they let Welker leave and go into the season with garbage and no depth at receiver, then that'll be time to start lobbing criticism.

And who is this stud CB you're going to get?

It's penny wise.

They knew what they were doing.

Schefter: Wes Welker deal to Broncos nearly done

We never won a SB with Wes, to me that means we don't need him if we want SB titles. He's nice to have but we need out side receivers not everyone in the middle of the field.

Re: Schefter: Wes Welker deal to Broncos nearly done

Exactly! And when you have the two best tight ends in the league you dont continue to dump cash into that part of the field. We need down-field threats to open it up for the tight ends....Remember the ravens just clogging the middle of the field and shutting us down?

The Pats just dont need Wes over a certain price with our tight ends. Also since we have glaring holes on D we should address those. Our dynasty was because we had a great D. Our WRs back then were nothing special.

Too many Madden fans on here just enamored with stats. Would it be great to have WWW sure? But we need to get back to a balanced PASSING attack so that teams have to respect the down field threat as well as the short routes

Nice first post, but one point I have heard to often in bashing Wes is how the ravens just shut us down in the playoffs. That is completely false the pats had over 400 yards of offense the ravens D did NOTHING to "clog the middle" the real problem was the 6 trips to the red zone that ended in 13 points. Without Gronk probably the greatest red zone threat in the nfl the offense did what it did all year just couldn't finish. So it is my opinion Wes is not the problem a back up red zone threat wins that game against the ravens

That makes more sense.

Re: Schefter: Wes Welker deal to Broncos nearly done

I agree with this but i dont want Reed. BB likes vets who are hungry for a ring Reed doesnt fit that. I personally think think No Neck Nate Ebner will be starting for the pats. guy is BEAST:rocker::rocker:

I'm stunned there was no sarcasm used to ease up how stupid this post is.

Re: Schefter: Denver in serious talks with Wes

Does comparing our team with the redskins, jets and cowboys really make you feel better?

Belichick has chosen to pay big bucks when he wishes, sometimes more than what they might have gotten elsewhere. Essentially, Belichick made the choice about Welker at least a year ago when he chose to extend Hernandez and Gronkowski, but not Welker.

Welker knows where he stands with the patriots. By now, he knows where he stands with Denver. Personally, I think that Welker is worth more to us than to anyone. However, Belichick clearly doesn't see it that way.

Is that as serious question? Of course it does. Pick a team that pays top dollar in FA and wins....yup none! The only exception is when a rare HOF calibar QB is available i.e. Manning, Brees. Would it make you feel better if I threw the Eagles in there?

I don't disagree, BB has a value for Welker and plan with him and without him. Over paying Welker or paying a 32 year old Welker for what he has done in the past is/would be dumb. Does any one think we haven't gotten Welker's best years out of him or at the very least the majority of his best years?

It takes two sides to make a deal and thus far neither side has found the number and years combination that makes both sides happy.

The bolded statement above is nothing more than your opinion at this point that may or may not be true. We'll find out when Welker signs.

Re: Schefter: Wes Welker deal to Broncos nearly done

I don't know why there is gnashing of teeth over the 4 years 45 million rumor.

It's all about how it is structured - which we absolutely do not know.

It's highly possible that there is manageable difference in 2 years 16m guaranteed and the first 2 years of Wes' contract + the guaranteed money.

Until we know the details we won't know if it is a bad deal or not.
