Wes Welker signs with Denver Broncos

Re: Schefter: Denver in serious talks with Wes

An area of the field that's already extremely busy in New England.

Hernandez is a slot receiver for all intents and purposes. It sucks to lose Welker, but his production can be replaced.

I agree his production will be replaced. Not replicated but replaced. Just like Moss's production wasn't replicated but it was replaced. Hopefully we replace that production with someone who's more productive down the field.

Re: Schefter: Wes Welker deal to Broncos nearly done

Stokley thinks Welker replacing him would be a “great move”

The guy most immediately impacted by a potential Wes Welker-Broncos marriage thinks it would be a good move, even if it means he’s out of work.

“I think it would be a great move if [the Broncos] got him,” Broncos free agent wide receiver Brandon Stokley told Mike Klis of the Denver Post. “I think he would be a great fit here.”

And yes, Stokley is well aware that such a signing wouldn’t enhance his own chance of hanging around Denver for another season.

“I know that,” Stokley said. “I’m just talking about production. Look at what he’s done the last six years. I’ve always thought he was underrated. You see these other receivers out there getting big money, I think Wes deserves what some of these guys are getting.”

Stokley’s 45 receptions last year were nice and all, but Welker had 118 playing the in the slot for the Patriots, and the fact Welker’s five years younger would make it a ridiculous upgrade.

“I’m fine with whatever happens with my situation, at this point,” Stokley said. “If last year was my last ride, with the kind of year we had as a team, I’d be happy with that. But you never what will happen. I might keep playing elsewhere. I’m just going to continue to stay in shape and wait to see if someone calls. If they do, I’ll be ready.”

Maybe the Patriots will call. It would be very like them.

While Broncos are pushing to sign Wes Welker, was told it still could go either way regarding a return to NE. Nothing definite yet

Reading most of these comments have been hilarious. If he goes you might see a true 2 TE offense with 2 outside receivers and less clogging of the middle. Ie you won't score more in the regular season but you will come playoff time. Also 7-10 million more dollars on defense.

3 superbowls with ok receivers
0 with butter fingers

Wow, classy Wes. After being treated like this to still do that.

Re: Schefter: Denver in serious talks with Wes

Exactlly. I expect amendola and/ greg jennings to sign with thhe pats, so his production is replaceable. However, the balance of power in the afc went from baltimore to NE to denver in one month.

We are 24 hours into free agency. People....CHILL!

Let's talk about "balance of power" in August, at the earliest. Does losing Welker(if thats what happens) hurt? Hell yes. I love Wes, dont get me wrong here. He's as tough and durable as they come. But the Patriots one measure of success is SB titles and the simple fact is that with Welker, the Pats have not accomplished their ultimate goal. Is that because of Welker? No. But, this offense has become too reliant on him. A change in this situation is a good thing.

Re: Schefter: Denver in serious talks with Wes

I don't want to see Welker go and that would suck. But, I do find the comments amusing on here, because it was 6 years ago when we "traded" for him many on here were *****ing and moaning about giving up a 2nd and 7th a few million for a "Teams" player.

Here the Pats have a value for him if a team exceeds that then so be it, the team will move on and pick up a younger guy or move Edelman into that role. Or they reconfigure their offense much like they did on D going from a primary 3-4 base to a primary 4-3 base. Either way they have planned for this possibility.

Re: Schefter: Wes Welker deal to Broncos nearly done

Riveting stuff.

Wish I knew the terms so I knew how the Pats would react. And how I would want them to react.

Re: Schefter: Wes Welker deal to Broncos nearly done

say good bye to welker. well prob get amendola and trade up to get tavon austin that has to be their plan.

Re: Schefter: Wes possibly going to Denver

As for the Pats, we should wait until we see what the Pats do before we judge if the Pats seriously downgrades the team. If the Pats use Welker's money and significantly improves the defense, this team could be significantly better even if the passing game takes a hit.

And we don't even know if Welker is gone yet.

This is 100% right on the money, Rob. If the Patriots lose Welker, and the offense suffers a 3-4 point per game loss, that would be significant. But if they spent that money wisely and upgraded the defense, they could improve 5-6 points per game on that side of the ball, and it would mean a net improvement of the team as a whole.

We have no idea what will transpire, but it's completely possible to lose Welker and the team ends up being better *overall*. If they spend wisely and the players they pick up pan out.

And, btw, it's not even certain that losing Welker would automatically mean a downgrade to the offense. I mean, I want Welker back and I *think* it would mean a downgrade. But it's conceivable that they won't really take a step back offensively.

Re: Schefter: Wes Welker deal to Broncos nearly done

if we lose him and don't land Jennings....BB better have something in the works.

Re: Schefter: Wes Welker deal to Broncos nearly done

Let's face it WW wants to stay in NE with his boy TB, but the Pats are trying to use it against him. Stay classy, Kraft.

That's reassuring. I'd hate it if it turned out like Ray Allen's FA deal, where he was so pissed with the FO that he went and played for a rival for less money than we were offering. At least this way, if he goes to Denver, we'll know that it's because Belichick wasn't willing to pay what the Broncos were. If that's the case, then it sucks, but I understand and will reserve judgment until I see where the money goes instead.
