Report: Tom Brady signs 3-year extension with Patriots

I appreciate that Brady signed such a cheap extension but if he is so committed to helping the team and winning another ring why doesn't he sign for veteran minimum? He already has made more money than he and his family could possibly spend for several lifetimes and his wife is worth 2x that amount. The Brady family could live lavishly off perpetuities from interest, investments, and endorsements and still end up with more money at the end of the year.

We already know Brady is insanely competitive and that winning more rings is incredibly important to him and his place in history. Therefore, why doesn't he play for peanuts and free up even more cap space to improve his chances? He will have the rest of his life to amass more wealth by investing the money he already has but he will only be able to compete for a ring for roughly 4-5 more years. I would think that winning another superbowl or two and going down as the greatest and most successful quarterback in history would be worth more than any amount of money considering the fortune he already has.

I'm not bitter or mad at Brady, I'm just legitimately curious why he plays for anything over vet minimum when it would be almost guaranteed that he wins at least one more superbowl if we could put his salary towards paying a big name FA and still get all the other FAs we need.
free agency rarely matters

ask the eagles.....

Its an incredible deal for the Patriots. I just wrote something up on it on the overthecap site (I had to make a quick edit as I had made a pretty bad math mistake in valuing the contract) and its ridiculous as to how little he took. Ive been saying the QB market needs to come back to earth and maybe he did it. Speaking as a fan of another team I dont know how you cant respect Brady. All the guy wants to do is win and his gives them a chance to really improve. Without a doubt they tag someone now and I would guess Talib rather than Welker. Ill get the cap figures updated when I get more details as there are a large number of structures they could use but its a ton of cap relief and he did not have to do that at all. People praised Manning for leaving the Broncos with neck protection but this is a whole different level of generosity by a player looking to win. Unheard of in sports today.

Also, Mallet is either taking the Steve Young route, or it's clear as day he is not the next in line to be the Patriots QB.

I would think that this makes Mallet a trade priority at some point (next summer?), since he would be very unlikely to resign to be a backup through 2017, would he?

That would be incredible patience on his part, if so. I guess he could be paid for that patience to some small extent, but he would likely think he could earn a starter's spot and starter's dollars.

I've never called anyone this before but go away troll nothing can rain on this parade.

How so? Whether or not we are able to resign Talib and Welker to competitive contracts is going to matter a lot next season, and if Brady was playing for vet min there would be no question that they return along with everyone else we need to sign/resign. I don't really follow the Eagles especially their free agent transactions so I don't know what you are talking about.

I'm a bit out of my league here, but oversimplifying it, I believe that they changed the way the tender is calculated, but the cap hit still looks at the cap hits of the top 5 at the position.

From Article 10 Section 2 of the new CBA:

Non-Exclusive Franchise Tender: (1) summing the amounts of the Franchise Tags for players at that position for the five preceding League Years; (2) dividing the resulting amount by the sum of the Salary Caps for the five preceding League Years (using the average of the amounts of the 2009 and 2011 Salary Caps as the Salary Cap amount for the 2010 League Year); and (3) multiplying the resulting percentage by the Salary Cap for the upcoming League Year

OR

120% of the previous year's salary. Whichever is greater.

For the EXCLUSIVE Franchise Tender:
(A) the average of the five largest Salaries in Player Contracts for that League Year as of the end of the Restricted Free Agent Signing Period
that League Year, as set forth in Article 9, Section 2(e), for players at the position (within the categories set forth in Section 7(a) below) at which he participated in the most plays during the prior League Year, or (B) the amount of the Required Tender under Subsec-tion (a)(i) above, whichever is greater.

This means that the Exclusive Franchise tender ONLY changes if a Free Agent signs a contract that would put them into the top 5. Otherwise, it stays the same as the non-exclusive tender. It won't go down

If the Pats get a good offer for Mallett from someone I say take it this year. Then, sign Cassel when's he's cut and let his psyche heal here. Even with his last bad couple of years in KC, he'd still make a hell of a backup if anything happened to Brady again:

80 TDs 57 INTs 59 comp % 80.4 qbr

How am I trolling dude, I'm asking a legit question in complete seriousness. I'm happy about the extension too, I think its very admirable that Brady is taking less salary to strengthen the team but I don't understand why he or other players in his position don't take it to the extreme when the only thing they have left to play for is superbowls.

So, you're a Jets fan, right?

There are a variety of reasons he can't. The first of which is that I'm pretty sure that the 27 million "extension" is effectively spreading some of the money out from the last 2 years of his current contract. Also, you are assuming that the 27 million in the final 3 seasons will be all salary. My guess is that it's probably not.

Brady is part of a Union. They have rules. And there are also rules called the CBA.

Sorry, but I don't believe that you are "legitimately curious as to why he plays for anything other than the vet minimum". I think this is you living in la la land.

Expiration Date February 2018

Between now and then what should we do to prepare?

Drafting a replacement; when, who, etc?

What is the plan for Mallett?

In a world where "I'm a team player until my last big contract comes up and I hold out" Brees and "I don't know how good I'll actually be coming of 3x neck surgeries" Manning have this kind of contract you seriously complaining about him taking this deal? Let's say he takes the vet minimum and we'd have Spygate all over again. Honestly there isn't a QB that I'd rather see lead this team than Tom Brady. We have one of the greatest of all time as our QB and you still see his eagerness to win. If that 4th ring shows up there shouldn't be a question who is the GOAT.

No it means that on the last day RFA signing period ends usually mid-April. It can be a UFA,RFA and a new deal by anyone not just RFA's. Just that the salary becomes locked in at the end of RFA signing period.

Right now the tender will be 19.33 million. So if one of the Top 5 (like Brady was) restructure it will drop in tender. Or if someone like Aaron Rodgers gets a new deal it could go up if he goes into top 5.

BTW.. Didn't see it mentioned (though I could have missed it). Entire extension is guaranteed.

Even I like this........

damn, that's cheap and amazingly low risk....he can quit whenever.....and makes a guy like mallett extendable so the next guy is ready when brady hangs 'em up.

golf clap

Re: Expiration Date February 2018

I'm not convinced he's done at 40.

BTW.. Didn't see it mentioned (though I could have missed it). Entire extension is guaranteed.

based on below, 'the next 3 years are guaranteed', not the entire thing...looks like he will be done in 3 years

Tom Brady, New England Patriots agree on three-year extension - NFL - Peter King - SI.com

2013: $13.8 million
2014: $14.8 million
2015: $13 million
2016: $14 million
2017: $15 million

The Patriots can do this by guaranteeing his salaries for the next three and giving him much of the money in a chunk of a bonus right now. That, the source with knowledge of the contract said, is what the Patriots intend to do. And history points to Brady doing the same thing eight offseasons ago
