The objective for any team should be the field the best units possible. Defensively, it's generally a good idea to add an enforcer in the defensive backfield that is at least competent in coverage. Chung is a hard hitter, and completely incompetent in coverage. By drafting him, though, Belichick made it pretty clear that he favors an enforcer type back there, just as he did when he picked up Rodney all those years ago. I suspect he'll be looking again this offseason.
This D needs a #1 CB...weather it be talib or someone else in FA. NOT through the draft
They need dennard to escape jail time
If dennard has to miss a few games, the team can survive with dowling(and if he gets hurt) then go back to mccourty at cb and put in another safety
Couldn't agree with Joey more!
I think there are two positions the Pats should address via free agency - pass rush and safety. Vet safety FA class is deep there should be someone good. And the Pats need someone with experience and explosion to go along with Chandler Jones. As opposed to previous years, this defense actually needs an injection of experience, it doesn't need to get younger.
Now CB, WR, OL you draft those because they are generally too expensive as free agents - ie 10m per for the good ones.

See i think it's the complete opposite with CBs and WRs. Drafting WRs. Pats just don't do and if they do..they usually fail at it. CBs the same. get them through FA
Obviously it'd be hard to disagree with you on the poorer drafting at certain positions, but I also think that they shouldn't give up either.
It wasn't too long ago that we were just talking about how they couldn't draft TE's to save themselves, and boom--2 of the top up and coming TE's in the game are drafted in the same year. Had they given up, we'd never have Gronkowski or Hernandez.
The CB/S route may have gotten a little better lately too (besides the fact that they drafted Asante Samuel) with picks of McCourty, Dennard, and T.Wilson.
If they don't draft those positions not only will we never know if they'd have panned out or not, but the problem will always exist in the future too. It's simply way too expensive to take those kinds of high-end players in free agency, not to mention that Belichick simply seems to refuse to do it almost all of the time. The draft is basically the only way to develop young, cheap talent for the current and the future.
What this defense needs is some Richard Seymour baby! Hes 33 years old, probably isn't going to demand huge bucks on the open market at this point in his career... maybe he would be up for coming to the Patriots for 1-2 years for a reasonable amount of money to try and help hoist another Lombardi! Hes not the player he was when we traded him, but he could certainly fill in and contribute along the defensive line next to Wilfork...
Was Richard Seymour era a success? - AFC West Blog - ESPN
After a year spent in Oakland, Richard Seymour is headed for unrestricted free agency.
He's open to playing for just about any team. Except the one that drafted him.
"There's probably about 31 teams I'd consider going to," Seymour said in a conversation with Tom Curran of Comcast Sports New England. TC asked him if he'd take a call from the Patriots if they approached him.
"That isn't something I'm looking to do at all," Seymour said. "But there's no ill will. I wish them the best. I really mean that. . . . I think it could have ended in a more respectful way, but that's just my personal opinion."
Seymour certainly isn't at his career peak, but he'll be an attractive, experienced starting option for the many 3-4 teams in the league. (The Chiefs and Broncos come to mind.)
With that said, the Patriots are likely very content to hold Oakland's first-round pick in 2011.
Unless he's changed his tune, don't count on it.

Dont count it out, its been 3 years, maybe after spending time in the nightmare organization known as Oakland, maybe hes changed his terms.
