Would their be something preventing him from signing this week?

No. It would be a futures contract for 2013 and beyond. He's enjoined from being signed for 2012 under NFL rules, since he played for the CFL this season. Theres no rule preventing teams from signing currently unsigned players to contracts. The Pats have already signed Mike Kafka and Marcus Benard to futures contracts.
