FWIW, that was a carbon fiber shield that IIRC is even stronger than, but lighter than, a traditional cast.

I wish everyone would stop talking about the Pats "rushing him back." They care more about his health than you do, because they're paying him a bajillion dollars to be awesome.
If he's healed and healthy, he'll play. If not, he won't. Simple as that.
Isn't a high ankle sprain a lot harder to read and manage when coming back? I don't think there is a very firm parallel. All this worry about coming back too soon is, IMO, wasted worry. He should be very effective playing with a cast. It wouldn't be a first..than a setback bringing him back too early..like Hernandez!!!

They'll target his arm that has a hard and heavy cast on it? OK....
Its not an ankle or a knee its a bone and its protected by a heavy cast and does not need to be flexible? I am honestly confused here.

I'm not a Human Scientician, so use small words for my tiny brain.
But isn't a broken bone more of a binary equation? It's either healed or it isn't? I know when I broke bones when they were healed there was no concern about breaking them again. Conversely when I had a string of twisted ankles it was clear that there was weakness and a possibility for re-injuring it again easily.
So if the doctor says the bone is mended and the arm is in a cast where is the risk everyone keeps talking about?
As a result, there may be a brief period in the healing process when the fracture site is stronger than the surrounding bone. But they later reach equal strength, and the fracture site is no more or less likely to break again. Dr. Amaral said that in studies in which healed bones were subjected to bending and twisting forces, the repaired bones were capable of breaking anywhere, including the fracture site. “They never comment that it’s stronger or weaker than the rest of the bone,” he said.
I agree. His issue is whether there is a pain issue. There is no rushing him back too soon. Either he can play with any pain there is or not.

Don't have him block, just run and catch. Use him on a limited number of plays in the end zone and as a decoy
Love this idea. He will require defensive attention (more so than Shiancoe or Huuuuuman). At worst he is your decoy for Hernandez/Welker/Lloyd/Vereen/Woodhead
I would use him as a blocker only. When one falls(and football players fall a lot)you brace yourself how?
