FWIW, after winning a silver medal as part of the US' 4x100 meter relay team, former Florida RB Jeff Demps has announced he's turning pro.

Interest from the Patriots, perhaps?

He would be an absolute nightmare on the return teams and lined up in the slot, should he understand our offense. I wouldn't mind giving him a look even though, at his size, he's one massive hit away from IR.

If we had a way to red shirt him for a year, I think he would make a great addition for next year even though he breaks the BB football is the most important thing in your life rule.

But even BB knows, you can't teach speed.

This is true, but in his case - the most important thing in his life was still competing. There's nothing more competitive or demanding than the Olympics.

Belichick's rule is in place b/c it fosters an environment where players all work together with the same common goal. An Olympic athlete will get that. What Belichick wants to see is work ethic, dedication, competitiveness.

I saw somewhere that Tampa Bay might be interested in him. Close to home I guess.

Hmm.. 5'7 6/8" tall and 191 lbs..

The question is what is his field vision like? You can be fast as hell and have no field vision, so you accomplish nothing but running into piles.

Hoooooooooooooo BOY.

1 ~ He goes down too easily on Contact, so running up the Gut should only be used as a Change Up.

2 ~ His lack of physicality ~ so far ~ prevents'm from being a legitimate Split Out Threat, as well.

3 ~ He's been injury prone, though he may very well add some beef, now that the Olympics are completed.

BUT...

1 ~ His Fluidity, navigating the Field, is amazing.

2 ~ His Lateral Velocity is phenomenal.

3 ~ And his Ricochet, exploding out'f'is Breaks, is utterly preposterous.

His Processing Speed is unremarkable, but Processing Speed, like Instinct, is a product not only of natural Talent, but of Training, as well: With 100% ~ rather than, say, 25% ~ of his time and energy now committed to FootBall, we may very well see substantial improvement, there, over the next year or two.

And my GOD, could he be deadly out'f the Slot!!

Jeff Demps ~ My Prospectus

My greatest concern would be about his ability to Block effectively. He's not been a very physical player. If that was simply a product of a cautious approach, to save himself from injury, due to an Olympian focus that is no longer in his way...and if he can satisfy Mad Bill at an interview that he's prepared to give'is all for'is teammates at all times ~ and probably strap on a few more pounds of beef ~ then I would love to see us bring'm in.

I don't want any O Backs on the roster who can't Run, Block, and Receive effectively, and as of now only Vereen and WoodHead seem to me to be likely to produce on all three accounts, so I'd be very interested.

Of course, if he isn't prepared ~ or, ultimately, able ~ to knock the occasional Blitzer on'is @$$, then I'd say Thanks But NO Thanks!! :nono:

Ok so let me see if I have this straight. We sign Demps and line him up in the slot split to the left with Lloyd at WR and Hernandez at TE. On the other side we have one of Branch/Stallworth/Gaffney at WR and Welker in the slot.

Now when the ball is snapped for the pass play, Demps will be covered by a LINEBACKER. This is a dream mismatch for the Pats offense.

But because Demps can't block, you want to pass on getting the ball to a guy with 4.2 speed in the open field with a LINEBACKER twenty or so yards in the rearview mirror.

What am I missing?

Amidst reports that Demps is going to sign in the next 24 hours, we have this from a Florida Gators blogger...

Andrew Olson‏ @ITG_Andrew
Ran into Jeff Demps at Gainesville Airport this morning. He was on his way to Boston, said it wasn't #NFL related

Might be something, might be nothing...but I did find it interesting he's flying to Boston when his decision is imminent.

Curious time for a "leisure trip" indeed. ;)

What you're missing is the LineBacker blitzing, crushing Demps, and then knocking Brady out for the season.

Do I really need to explain to you how dangerously foolish it'd be to field an O Back who can't Block??

And try to read before you post: I explicitly wrote "IF."

Grid, I like your idea of him in the slot, but if he were there the protection responsibility issue would be moot, yes?

Sure, if you're looking for a Slot Receiver.

But he's raw as a Receiver, and this is a complex System, my friend.

Like I said: IF he's willing ~ and able ~ to become a decent blocker, I'd be ecstatic to sign Jeffrey Demps.

We could line'm up in the BackField and then hornswoggle the D by slipping'm into the Slot and going Empty...or vice versa!! The possibilities would be phenomenal.

But what if the D throws a monkey in our wrench with this or that Stunt, Zone Blitz, Fire Zone, or what have you...and Demps needs to pick somebody up...and can't??

Suddenly, Brady's life ~ and our team's entire season ~ is in peril.

If you believe NFL.com, the Jets are trying hard to sign him:

Tim Tebow recruiting U.S. Olympian Jeff Demps - NFL.com

That would be a peculiar choice for Demps, though, given that they already having a blazing KR who's a question mark as an RB.

He does have experience in the Tebow option, if the Jets add him to be the guy that runs the option with Tebow that would be a legitimate home run threat, would have to put a LB spy on Tebow and a fast CB/S type player spy on Demps.

That may make sense from the Jets' perspective, but from Demps' side it immediately pigeonholes him as a gimmick player. If I were him I'd look for an opportunity at KR for the best immediate chance of making a roster, knowing that it may take him some time to be integrated into any offense.

(Rumors continue that he's heading to the Patriots....)

And those rumors look to be confirmed.

He signed a deal today with the Pats.

Since they were considering Woodhead and Stallworth as options for KR I think this is a very good thing.

EYEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!

Yes, Demps was generally projected to go "Day 3."

But, um ~ hello?? ~ that was because of the risk that he wouldn't sign at all!!

We have just pilfered a 2nd Round Talent, Ladies and Laddies!!

If a LB blitzes,Brady dumps the ball to the hot read.

This is a nonissue. Demp's speed is incredible and provided he stays healthy, BB will have his kick off returner.
