Doing this now will make it easier to get him on the practice squad.

Here comes Clifton?

didn't see that one coming.

OK, so who wants to catch a second-half touchdown now?

He was waived cause of his injury I believe, he was a longshot to make the roster anyways. ...unless you read Jets forums, where Davis was directly competing with Gaffney and Branch for their spot.

The impression I got from Reiss is that he can't be re-signed by the team until week 6.

Doubt Plax is part of the equation but it seems the decks are being cleared for some roster moves.

That's doesn't make sense. I am under the impression that if no one claims him off the waiver wire, he becomes an UFA, and thus able to sign with any team....including the Pats.

Sadly this makes sense. He'll miss the rest of the pre-season making his chances of making the WR squad effectively zero, so why not free up a roster spot. Other teams can add him to their PS but only a team desperate for WR development (gulp, Miami, Jets) would do this. Wonder if he departs with an "understanding"? That said if I'm a kid looking to make the NFL and in September another team makes me a PS offer, I'd take it rather than wait and bet the Pats made me one in week 6.

I believe an injury settlement happens AFTER a player clears waivers. He takes a lump sum that's less than his IR pay would be, and gains the opportunity to hook on with another team.

IIRC, an injury settlement precludes the team from resigning a player during that season. . . .
