Perhaps between Clifton and Vollmer we can get 16 games of tackle play?

Or in a perfect world, 19 games.

As with Gallery, Clifton would provide a veteran backup, who might start. I like the idea of Solder, Vollmer, Cannon, Clifton and a an OT on the Practice Squad. Besides, with the injuries at OT we need a body for the rest of the preseason.

It doesn't hurt. The Pats got lucky with Brian Waters last year. Gallery didn't work out. Why not kick the tires on Clifton and see if he has anything left. He would add a veteran presence to a young tackle group at the very least.

Should we sign him?? I personally think it'd be great to have an insurance plan in case Solder isn't ready. To me the only problem is, he's just as injury-prone, if not, even more than Vollmer is.

OT is clearly the biggest concern on the roster right now. (The good news is, it's practically the only concern.)

But Solder, IMO, is the least of our worries. I feel a lot more confident in him than Cannon, who I've always found an odd fit for this offense. And I feel a lot more confident in Cannon than the guy behind him, who at this point is nameless!

Maybe Ross Ventrone could bulk up and play tackle? How about Hank Poteat?

Yeah, we're at the point where it's time to stretch the rolodex a bit.

Lots of questions at the tackle position so if he can still play he's worth signing even if it's just for depth.

Mike Reiss speculated that Vollmer and Mankins are going to return soon, as they are doing rehab work on the field while the team practices. I think Clifton is more insurance as a backup in case vollmer or Solder get hurt during the season. The coaching staff does not seem to be high on cannon.

He speculated that they could return soon--based on the fact that they have been in shorts and t-shirts working out on the sideline. That's a big difference.

I don't know if the coaching staff doesn't seem to be high on Cannon as you say, but he has struggled at the tackle position.

My sentiments exactly.

If Vollmer's healthy we could have Clifton as the backup OT for either side, but I see your point.

I get this visual of BB actually still using a rolodex and it makes me laugh for some reason. Unless he moved the info to his MyFace page.

With an "A", "B", "C", "Chads", "D," etc?

For me, no more Chad's, hanging, heading banging or otherwise.

I remember thinking it was strange that Cannon was all of a sudden considered to be an OT candidate rather than a G - its not often guys are drafted as the latter and end up the former.

Hopefully once the O depth sorts itself out Cannon can start making the RG spot his own (spelling Waters or whatever)

14 year vet FA, who is suddenly interested in signing for a playoff contender two weeks before the end of camp sounds like the proper timing for a guy who hates TC.

Jeff Otah anyone?

Having Clifton there as a mentor for both Solder and Cannon can't be a bad thing. I doubt he could start today, but could be a good rotation guy or back up.

He was a college left tackle who most fans had pegged as an NFL guard. In the right system, he could do it. But the Patriots like their guards to be a little shorter and skinnier. Send him to the Cowboys and he'd be a right guard in their power scheme, I'm guessing.
