There are two teams near the end of the first that could desperately use a great tight end like Coby Fleener, who is currently projected as a late first/early second round pick—San Francisco and the Giants.

Picking before each of them, though, is the Patriots.

I'd put even odds that some team that feels they need Fleener—possibly even SF or the NYG—will trade up to either 27 or 31 to get him.

Heck, I could even see Belichick calling them and trying to spook them into thinking HE might take Fleener. . . .

Thoughts?

I don't think the Giants are a factor - they historically draft DE, WR, CB in the first round and secondly, of all the teams in the NFL, the Giants use their TE's as blockers most and Fleener doesn't really fit that approach. I do think the 49'ers are a real possibility however. Harbaugh likes his TE's and of course coached him previously. Don't rule out the Texans, they just got rid of Joel Dreesen.

Maybe. It would depend on who was there at our pick that we risked missing out on, and what we got in return.

I see this as an almost certainty that the Pats will do this in this draft. It's just a question of if it will cause me to throw things at my TV.

Indy at the top of the second round fits your profile. They cut Clark and lost Tamme and their new QB to be threw the ball to Fleener in college. Giving him a binky he's familiar with would expedite his progress. With Polian gone we could trade with them.

If he is there at 31, why would BB contact the Giants?

No chance we take him, and Giants are the next pick!

And why would SF want him? Vernon Davis is a very good player!

We have two very good TEs on our roster and our offense was successful in large part to them.

It's a copycat league as they say, and adding another pass catcher with that kind of size and good hands isn't a bad idea.

It's not like Davis is being replaced.

As sacrilegious as this is (and on Easter no less!), I would be very happy with Colby Fleener at #31. I would have the number one player at a position instead of the #10 DT or something.

My prediction is the Colts at #33 however so they can give Luck a security blanket. They could even trade up a little. The Polian no-trade regime is gone.

Harbaugh loves Fleener, coached him in college, he definably wants him and their defense doesn't need work so I expect them to focus on the offense

The Colts might be interested in Fleener too, to pair him back up with Luck. And they've lost all their TEs. Trading back to #34 would appeal to BB, I think.

That would be a nice trade back. Depending on who was there I would probably make that trade and recoup the 5th rounder at Indy's expense and it would of course only be a possibility if the Giants were zeroing in on Fleener. BB might squeeze for more if that is the case.

Or if BB was shown interest from other teams about Fleener for the 27th to move up ahead of the 49ers,Giants and Colts it could get interesting. Don't count out the Browns either. They could be looking to totally revamp their offense by getting an elite RB,WR and TE.

Neither SF or NYG is desperate for a TE. Sure any team could use a special player but there is no guarantee Fleener is special.

All of NYG's TEs were injured in the Superbowl, Harbaugh coached Fleener at Stanford and has expressed interest in him. The NFL is a copycat league, Gronk and Hernandez set a precedent that other teams will try to follow.

If he were there at 31, I'd be taking him myself. Guys that are 6'6", run a 4.45, and were productive in college don't grow on trees. The NFL is all about mismatches right now, and Fleener is going to be a big one. There's no defender in the NFL right now that can match both his size and speed. And I'm not sure there are 3 guys in the NFL that can cover Gronk, Hernandez, and Fleener together, much less 3 on one team. Using 27, 48, and 62 (or whatever they end up with after trades) on defense is good enough.

That said, if the Colts bring something like their 2012 4th and 2013 1st to the table, I may have to reconsider based on the likely chance of a top-5 pick

nailed it, Brady works the no huddle like nobody's business, when you have 3 TEs out there and you can split Fleener and/or Hernandez out to WR that makes so many mismatches.

It may be a copycat league but that doesn't mean every team jumps on every trend. SF has Vernon Davis at TE who is more than msot team's top two TEs. At WR they have Ginn and Crabtree plus FA signings Moss and Maningham. Not to mention Gore, Jacobs and Hunter at RB which is one of the best tandems in the league. Clearly skill guys is not a need.

If you are as high on Fleener as Sciz, then of course NYG or SF would take him. Any team makes room for a guy like that. If the Pats feel that good about the guy I wouldn't mind taking him either.

They kept all of their defensive starters they are set on defense, putting a second TE across from Davis would be one of the best things they can do in the draft, if we didn't sign Fells I would be jumping all over getting Fleener, and while I think Fleener will be better than Fells we need a defense with those draft picks.
