Player Signing Patriots sign LB Bobby Carpenter

This could be a stickie. Being ready to field a quality team 3 weeks before the draft is truly impressive. I would only add that Belichick could sign Carter (or another potential starter at DE) and complete the pre-draft job.

.

Pats could field a team right now, before the draft, with the exception of LDE. If they can pick up any edge rusher in the first two rounds he would probably be at the top of the depth chart. But entering the draft they will have one of the most complete teams in the league.

...underwhelming.:yawn2:...camp fodder ...jag....

it's all good...

Bobby C. was a Parcells pick, heralded as the next Harry Carson. So, I know what this signing is all about - Parcells is going to take over the Pats, not the Saints!

More likely - a tiny needle in the ass of the Tuna courtesy of his pal Billy B: Hey, you're going to coach the again, eh? Maybe for fun I'll take the last of 'your guys' left on the market so you can't use him to help the doubting Thomas's in NO buy into the idea you can get them into the SB. Oh, come on, Tuna in New Jersey swamp water, I'm just kidding around...

BB loves taking fliers on guys who had great potential and flubbed. At low cost he gets to see if somehow others missed the essential ingredient to turn the never expressed expected talent into a role player. Low cost, low percentage of success, high gain if a unicorn appears. Why not? It's what summer camp is for.

I think he goes in the 1st cut down.

Great...pass rush solved. I'm sure he makes up for Anderson's missing sack total.

I still wish we drafted Carpenter over Maroney in 2006 even after knowing how his career turned out.

In Belichick I tr.....

No. Ugggh. :bricks:

At least Carpenter is still in the league.

Did you know the Patriots were 40-8 in games Maroney played in?
Take that for whatever you wish.

Are you kidding? This is a great signing! He was the ultimate patsfans.com/mboard binkie coming out of OSU, and the debate was whether we wanted to trade up for him or not.

After the Cowboys gave up on him, I had this twinge of regret that he didn't end up in the Pats scheme, but I assumed BB had no interest. He was passed around the league. A 250# tweener is not a fit for every team or every scheme. And now we get a shot at him for free.

Zero, repeat zero, risk. He isn't any smaller or slower than he was a few years ago.

It's not like I have such an overwhelming respect for the Dallas organization's ability to grow talent into players. BB has turned Ninkovich into a solid starter, another guy that was handed around the league before setting roots in Foxboro. And Nink has a lot less to work with than Carpenter. When we signed Anderson from the Bears last year, he was pretty much washed up, too. A year in our scheme, a handful of sacks, and now he has resuscitated his career.

How come everyone is excited by the Trevor Scott signing and completely dismissive of Carpenter? Seems like we signed the same guy twice. Like buying two lotto tickets instead of one. Let's see them run around in TC and see what sticks.

I'll pulling for Carpenter to turn the corner as a pro in a Pats uni and prove the Belichick-genius storyline once again.

Because Scott has actually played at a high level at some point in his NFL career.

Yeah, for the Raiders... pretty stunning resume. And they let him walk. Even more impressive!!

Scott's best year for the Raiders was 2009... he had 43 tackles.
Carpenter's best year was 2009... he had 46 tackles.

Well, well, well.... seems to me everyone is just piling on and don't know what they're talking about.

I'm with mgteich on this. This is textbook Belichick.

Maybe I need to just leave this gif in a tab so it's readily available, because it seems applicable to most signings lately.

Tackles? Really?

If we would have drafted him like I wanted, we would have cut him years ago. Then we wouldn't have this to talk about today.

Only difference between Scott and Carpenter is that Carpenter was a disappointment after being picked at #18 in the 1st round, and Scott was a 6th rounder who made good. That's the only difference. Other than that, they're the same guy. Same size, same productivity, same likelihood to be successful.

If you disagree, find me something really exciting about Trevor Scott that puts Bobby Carpenter to shame.

I haven't read all the posts so bear with me if this had already been posted. And while I generally agree that this guy pretty much sucks and is facing an uphill battle to make the squad, I still like this signing.

That's not exactly true, as Scott has, at one point in time, displayed promise as a pass rusher, which as you know is something we desperately need.

Bobby Carpenter has been one notch above suck the entire time he's been in the league, and hasn't shown much of anything other than the ability to play linebacker at a very low level.

Like I said, it's possible BB can get something out of him... I just wouldn't count on it. The reason Scott excites some people is because he might be a replacement for Anderson if he can stay on the field.

I hope that wasn't the best of Carpenter. Guyton had a few pick-six's that looked better.
