Given GRONKnandez's domination of late, it's worth noting that Welker has notched two more major accomplishments:

(1) Last week Welker joined Marvin Harrison and Jerry Rice as the only players in NFL history with four 100-catch seasons.

(2) This week Welker brought his catch total to 536. This puts him second all-time in Pats history:

1. Troy Brown 557 catches/192 games
2. Wes Welker 536 catches/75 games
3. Stanley Morgan 534 catches/180 games

Should've been a Patriot sooner.

He has been so productive. I wonder what he is going to cost us?

I don't think as much as people think. He is in the ideal system for him, and Tom Brady is his binky more so than he is Brady's.

he wont be paid like a #1 outside WR, but i think itll be closer than ppl think

the guy is a monster, being in the top 3 WR in the league this year...manipulate that however you want, but it will still be true

he WILL get paid, and with the increases in salary cap that are assumed to be coming i dont mind

just look at holmes, the guy sucks now, and is being paid like 7 or 8mil a year? or was it 10? i expect wes to not reach that type of deal, but hit a close one

how much interest do you think wes will have in the open market?

Stanley Morgan, best WR in Pats history.

Stanley Morgan was the best WR in Pats history;

but Wes Welker is the best WR in Pats history

I am old enough to have seen Stanley in his prime. With today's rules, he would be even better. But what Wes is doing is truly amazing. To think that we were getting a hall-of-famer in that seemingly minor trade with the Dolphins... well, that was a crazy notion. It is now a real possibility, if neither side screws up and keeps Wes in the same uniform for the rest of his career.

I think he might have been if they didn't already have Troy Brown.

I would argue that had the Patriots still had Branch, the Pats wouldn't have gone out and got both Moss and Welker..Or neither...Strange how things turn out...

Actually, I think they would have gotten Moss regardless; for a fourth, the possible upside was too high to pass up.

OTOH, I agree that had Branch been in NE in 2006, they might not have felt a need to pony up a second to go after Welker in 2007.

Heck, a substantial segment of the board was convinced BB had thrown away a second.

I can remember getting ridiculed the prior October before the Pats played Miami for wanting the Pats to sign Welker in that coming off-season...And when they traded for him, I was elated..

I knew that Welker would be good, but I figured he'd be Troy Brown good. I never expected close to Hall of Fame numbers good..

Let's be honest.

Welker is the prototype slot receiver -- he defines the position.

However, it's not really valid, IMO, to compare Welker's reception count to receptions by players that played what is in effect a substantially different position -- outside receiver.

The fact that Welker is still alive from the hits he takes playing in the slot and going across the middle all day is astonishing.

Discrediting one of the most productive receivers over the past 5 years because he doesn't play on the outside, and plays in a position that is actually MORE physically punishing is just crazy.

Also, Welker lines up everywhere, he's a true #1 because of his attitude and football smarts which make up for what he lacks in physical ability. He isn't just a slot WR anymore.

Stanley Morgan was fast, instinctive, had great hands and above all smart. I can't begin to imagine what he would of done in this offense with Brady. It killed me when he donned that Indy uniform in his final year.

The Patriots have two proto-types: Gronkowski at TE and Welker in the slot.

Randy Moss was the prototype for a wide-out. Too bad they didn't wire him correctly and he short-circuited.

Agree on Gronk being a prototype TE.

However, Welker, in this offense, with Brady, has really created a new position. You can call it a slot receiver, but in this offense, with option routes, quick cuts and jukes, reading the D, and the focus on short-medium passes, with this degree of success, the position is something the NFL hasn't really seen before.

To me, creating an entirely new position and excelling at it, to the extent that one changes the way the game is played, transcends being compared to other great receivers (Rice, etc.).

I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere yet, and it's slightly OT, but man, he made a fantastic catch on that ball yesterday where he ended up sliding across the goal line. I don't think he gets enough credit for how well he actually catches the ball.

He has been so undercompensated for so long. I wish they re-upped him coming off of last season because the longer the clock ticks the higher the price is going to go. He deserves a contract that makes up for his previous one.
