Patriots safety Patrick Chung (foot) and tackle Sebastian Vollmer (foot, back) have been listed as doubtful for Sunday's game in Denver after neither player practiced all week.

Would doubtful on Friday mean they intend to make the trip and will be a game day decision?
Are players ruled out on Friday (or is that Saturday) when they won't make the trip? Clearly if they make the trip it is a game time decision, otherwise they stay home.

I imagine that without practice they are pretty much out. I'm not sure how the team officially does it though being ruled out Friday/Saturday though.

My recollection is that if a player does not practice all week long then Belichick will not play him on Sunday - period. And if he has no intention of playing him, then it makes a lot more sense for the player to remain behind and get treatment - or at least sit back with his feet up - rather than sit on an airplane for several hours.

Perhaps there have been exceptions to the 'no practice, no play' team rule, but off the top of my head I cannot think of any that I remember.

edit: espnBoston is reporting that Chung is not making the trip:

Chung doesn't travel to Denver
ESPNBoston.com's Chris Forsberg reports that Patriots safety Patrick Chung was in attendance at Friday night's Boston Celtics scrimmage at TD Garden in Boston, meaning he did not travel with the team to Denver on Friday afternoon. He will miss his sixth consecutive game.

Chung was listed as doubtful with a foot injury on Friday's injury report, released shortly before the team departed for Denver. He could be downgraded to out as early as early as Friday night, but an announcement has yet to be made.

Along with offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer (back/foot), who is also listed as doubtful, Chung did not practice this week. In his place, James Ihedigbo, Matthew Slater, and Nate Jones again figure to be the team's top three safeties for Sunday's game against the Broncos.

2 guys we could absolutly use. Unfortunate. Chung is a glaring loss. Vollmer is valuable but at least we re-signed Light. He's been solid (as he always has) this year. One of the smartest FO moves made this offseason. If you can keep a known commodity, you keep him. Future Red Jacket guy.

Hope we get to see some Spikes then.

What I was saying was that when the report was issued if it was already determined he wasn't traveling to Denver he would have been ruled out.
Typically players are ruled OUT once they don't make the trip. I wasn't sure whether that change downgrade was normally announced on Fri or Sat.
My point was that if the downgrade to out is announced on Fri and he was still listed as doubtful, that would mean he is going to travel and would be a game time decision (otherwise why travel). This was cleared up by someone seeing him in Boston after the team flew out.
Apparently they announce the downgrade on Saturday.
