If Carter signs a new contract, then we will be expected to continue to run a base 4-3. If not, we may be returning to a base 3-4. Obviously, this greatly affects the value of various DL's and LB's to the patriots.

Pretty much. And given the lack of 3-4 talent this coming draft, I wonder if they're just better off sticking with the 4-3 for one more year and then going back in 2013, after a draft with some legitimate 34 talent.

We should stay with the 4-3. Right now it's easier to get personnel to run that system then it is for BB's type 3-4. Maybe, in 5-10 years the pendulum will swing back to the 3-4 (BB's type).

Sign Carter, Anderson and find another as well as a draft pick (somewhere in the draft). We still have other options presently on IR.

Carter has been our 3rd MVP on defense this, maybe 2nd or first. either way we can't lose him. That means were staying 4-3 IMO.

I'd like to keep the 4-3 permanently. Have maybe one of the de's capable of dropping back into coverage if desired. You see it when teams play us. If they're only rushing three, Brady carves em up. You're not going to beat these elite qb's if you can't get after em.

Mario Williams is a free agent. If Houston wants to deal him because they are running a 3-4 now. And, he thinks he's better suited for the 4-3. Tag and trade works for me. Give em our first and a future pick and you have bookend de's to go with our widebodies in the middle.

that would be awesome my friend, but can it be done?

Is he going to be the same player post injury? Plus he'll cost a fortune .......... a first round pick (late) a garbage pick (future conditional third) and a hefty hefty hefty contract. All assumes he's still a beast. Also, IIRC he was doing pretty well in the 3-4 for Texas, the issue may be moot.

We're probably better off with a lesser deal on an Osi type, coupled to a high draft choice selection (along with keeping Carter). If we whiff on MW, it'll be a huge setback.

Sometimes you have to swing for the fences. Julius Peppers had a tremendous impact on the Bears defense. I feel Mario Williams can do the same for us. He tore a pec. Wasn't an ACL or anything. Should have fresh legs when he comes back. He was worth the money gamble before his injury. No reason to think he won't regain his form. Belichick actually discussed Peppers while he was in Carolina. He's got to be disgusted with this defense and not just willing to rebuild through the draft. Williams only played a couple of games in the 3-4. Hard to tell whether he's a fan or not. They have Barwin and Reed now.

First things first.

I would like us to re-sign/extend Carter and Anderson before free agency opens.

Instead of Super Mario how about Jared Allen. He'll cost less in picks and money and hasn't recently had surgery. Plus I love his jack in the box celebration and feel he could get creative with it throwing snow in the air during Dec / Jan.

Allen - Wilfork - ? - Carter is beast. Then you bring in Anderson as a sub rusher, game over. A pass rush like that will keep Arrington's INT numbers high.

Option B could be Mathis, I believe he's a FA.

Allen is due $26M over the next two seasons. He'd also cost just as much in picks, considering that he leads the NFL in sacks right now and is on pace for 21.5. Also, that gives the Pats two REs. The LE spot is more of a run defense position, hence Ellis and Deaderick getting big snaps there. Ellis/Deaderick on early downs with Anderson on passing downs is about the perfect combination there. It basically comes down to picking one of Carter, Allen, and Williams at RE and a much bigger guy at LE.

Mathis will never fit in a Bill Belichick defense. He actually requires that his pass rushers play the run, unless you're a $1M a year, 3rd down specialist like Anderson, and Mathis will get paid at least 5x that (he's making

Didn't realize Allen was owed that much. It's certainly too much. But it's not totally unreasonable for Allen to rework that down to say 8 mil a year to play on a contender. Maybe we give him an extra year or 2 at 8 mil per. Probable, no, but possible. IDK how much Allen has made in his career but his clock is ticking to get a ring.

As for picks I can't see it costing us more than a first and Super Mario would certainly cost more. I can't see Mario getting away for any less than 2 1st rounders and maybe more than the 13 million Allen is getting.

Lastly I don't think it would be that much of a problem for Allen to play LE. Listed 6-6 270 and I never considered him the type of DE who just ran up field and ignored the run. I know BB's 4-3 LE is essentially our 3-4 LE. But I'll take talent over positional requirements any day. I'd rather have Bill adjust his scheme to maximize a talent (i.e. a more traditional 4-3, maybe he still has Vince and the DT 2 gap) than hide a weakness (lesser player at LE).

The Pats have to strongly consider resigning Carter and Anderson. Then the Pats can rebuild the line through the draft and hopefully use the picks wisely. Jared Allen is a sacking machine and an expensive one. The best chance for the Pats to get him is if he will take a paycut and is already thinking more about doing whatever it takes to get a superbowl ring.
Mario Williams would be an expensive free agent and tough to get. He is only 26 and had 9 sacks in his 1st two seasons. He was on the pace for 16 sacks this year but if the pectoral injury is healed and the Texans will take a 1st round and future pick for him, then the Pats have to consider it. Imagine if the Pats starting DLine next year was Wilfork, Williams, Carter and a 2012 1st round DL like Devon Still or someother high quality rookie!
