Meanwhile you're failing to grasp the point. It doesn't take a genius to see the defense has fell off since 2004 but blaming 28 points on the defense in that game is absurd.

you'r right.....one should never expect this defense to keep you in a game of importance

no turnovers, no sacks, no TFL's.......yep, the defense did its job that day....LOL

no, Sterling Moore was not on Garcon it was McCourty. Really have to wonder how many people watched the end of the game with all of this mis information going around. They were most certainly not in prevent defense.

Not the TD the big pass play earlier, where Moore got turned around. They were not in prevent, but they were certainly playing soft and toying with personnel. Go rewind your DVR and check it out, they had some starnge match ups out there.

Not when the other team is starting in your territory 4 times, nope. It's alot to ask of any defense.

Moore got beat in cover 1 with Slater up top. Cover 1 is not soft zone and when McCourty got beat it wasn't in soft zone they were both in man. Even if they were in soft zone for a majority of the time then it would be even more of a reason to be concerned because of the amount of big play surrendered.

we were on the wrong page, I was speaking of the last TD where Garcon abused McCourty on back to back plays. Sterling got embarrassed as well but its not like our "#1" corner looked much better.

If you're expecting this defense to do what the 2003/2004 defense did you're probably going to be disappointed.

All I originally said was if the offense plays efficient and doesn't put the D in tough situations they should be able to hold most of the AFC offenses in the 17-20 point range and Brady won't need to be counted on to put up 30+ week in week out. I know it's hard for some people to comprehend and they either don't know the meaning of the word efficient, or they actually believe the offense played an efficient game in the divisonal round last year. Either way they're missing the point.

What's your point are you agreeing with me. I never said they were in prevent, they were mixing it up. The bottom line for me is I can't take the D to task for the last qtr. I don't think it's an indication of their capabilities. If nothing else it was an exercise to understand certain players shortcomings. They found some.

Actually it was a mix of prevent, sprinkled with blitz, highlighted by Sterling Moore on Garcon at cb. I think it's safe to say they were "mixing" things up.

since when do we not mix it up? People complain about receivers getting 15 yard cushions in tie games so its not like we pulled back the reigns. McCourty struggled in man earlier in the season and he has the same struggles. See the thread title? It may not be an indication of his abilities but it is a reflection upon his and most of the secondaries play thus far. The Jets game was the best Ive seen them.

I think the nature of this D is to play both off and tight coverages. Which is what they did. Unfortunately some people were given some opportunities and they didn't show well. I just don't think with the personnel they rolled out there in the fourth we should draw too many conclusions on what this unit is capable of on defense. I am still optimistic.

So we agree that the schemes didn't change too much, good. As far as the personelle goes, Sterling Moore cant play man coverage, not surprising. Unfortunately though, Devin McCourty can't play man coverage and that isn't surprising either given the way he's played in man this season. Can he get better? Certainly but will it happen on the fly this season? Well it hasn't happend yet and they're running out of time to answer that. Luckily we aren't in a situation where we can't afford to let him match up with Stevie Johnson and Demaryius Thomas, and Marshall to get his confidence up.

Nope, but if you can't make a play against Sanchez, you're kidding yourself

I miss having players like Law on the D. Ty Law didn't **** around.

its funny, after the steelers game, Harrison said they can't play zone..

Guess they can't play either..

Two more haters

no, Im pretty sure he ripped how soft the zones were though.

lets hope that off day isn't in the playoffs

However..the D did basically win the dallas game for us..O didn't do anything besides the final drive

That off day will be forced in the playoffs, unfortunately. Just as it has been against some of the better teams we've played this year. The Denver and Miami games are going to be interesting ones. Tebow will probably set his single game yardage mark and the Broncos defense is completely capable of slowing our offense down to keep them in the game. Miami's defense has improved over the last few games but I can't see them slowing us down like Denver can. Their offense, however, is capable of putting up 30+ on us and that would realistically be their best defense. When our defense can't get off the field on third down, Brady sits on the bench... and he ain't throwing TD's to Gronk from that spot on the field.

As for the defense, I've seen them play some decent man to man in spurts this season. Unfortunately, playing decent man to man in spurts isn't going to help us long term. The zone is better executed but is just as easy to drive against with short and intermediate passes like the Steelers did.

Pittsburgh, the Pats and the Colts seemed to have little problem winning 5 out of the last 10 SuperBowls while playing predominantly zone defense.

Completely inaccurate. Watch some of the old games. The defense played A LOT of man coverage back in 2003 and 2004. They also did it in 2006 and 2007 (though the zone was starting to be featured more and more this year due to the age of the LB's) when advancing deep into the playoffs.

How to make up for the inability to play man-to-man? Create turnovers and a decent pass rush. If the Pats can't do that in the playoffs they're done.

The Pats can do neither on a consistent basis. The pass rush is sporadic at best and most of the turnovers they get come from batted balls.

Some of you are overreacting about the playoffs. In the AFC, other than possibly Rapistberger we wouldn't have to face an above average QB. The offense won't be relied on to score 30+ but they can't afford to crap their pants like they have int he last 3 playoff games.

If we were to make the super bowl though that's the one game where Brady will most likely have to be perfect. Those odds aren't great but still much better than having to play lights out in 3 or 4 straight playoff games. It's not as bad as y'all think. But ANY team going against NO/Packers will have to score alot of points.

Your first paragraph should be re-thought. Joe Flacco and the receivers he has would tear this secondary a new one. Oakland would be a tougher game than the first one would and they have the receivers to toast us if Palmer is able to stand upright (which he most likely would be), and Houston would still be able to move the ball against us with their short passing game (being that our corners will be some distance off of their receivers even though T.J. Yates is playing QB) and running game. Roethlisberger already showed that he's ready and able to eat the soft as cake zone alive and Sanchez threw for 300 yards against us last time around even though he's horrible. I agree with most of your second sentence, but Brady would be on the sidelines for a lot of the game against either the Saints or the Packers.

9-3, have the division locked, will be a 1 or 2 seed in the playoffs. That is reality.

That is not defending the defense that was out there in the 4th quarter today, we probably will not see that combo the rest of the year, including the playoffs.

Great news that we're 9-3. But how many games this year have we actually won BECAUSE of the defense? I count one, and that's Dallas. A case could also be made for the first Jets game although the offense was on in that one was well. As for your second paragraph, I don't think that any regular season game is a good time to experiment with players, and reflects some of the bad personnel decisions that Belichick has made on that side of the ball over the last couple of years. The time to experiment with guys at different positions is in practice or during the pre-season.

Its that extra inch that makes Revis so dominant. Not his physicality, confidence, speed and awareness but rather that extra inch.

Isn't that getting a little personal?

I have to be honest, i thought they were playing prevent because they were playing so far off the receivers and so damned unorganized and sloppy. Agree with your post completely

Some people on here think we were playing prevent defense in the 4th? How delusional can you be? The defense cant make a stop when they need to, and cant get off the field on 3rd downs. They allow 10+ minute drives to Indy, that happens when you have horrid personnel on defense.

You're a blind homer if you defended this defense today. Sorry, it's reality. And no, they didn't gain most of their yards in garbage time, which I've read a lot today. We're damn lucky we recovered that onside kick. Completely folding in the 4th doesnt equal this fictional "garbage time"
