Pats release Leigh Bodden

I remember a few thought Butler was worthy as a first rounder, especially coming off the combine, but people were generally psyched about Chung. I remember because everyone knew the Patriots needed a safety, and right after the Patriots grabbed him (some thought he went a bit too early) there was a run on other safeties.

I don't think people hated the player per sea (shouldn't have used that term), but the general consensus was he was a reach where they took him. I personally liked the pick, but I remember people complaining that they could have gotten him later in the draft.

Butler fit the Patriots DB mold to a tee, except between the ears.

He was smaller, fast and had great change of direction. (3 cone drill) However could not adjust from man to the soft BB zone defense predicated on read and react.

People hated that "mold" and were thrilled when the Patriots went away from it. I didn't have a problem with the mold. I just thought Smith was a better choice.

Alphonso Smith? Yikes.

Interestingly enough, I just found an old Kirwan article ranking the 2008 DB class. Molden was his #10 CB, rated as a potential 4th rounder. It's not beyond the realm of possibility they could turn him into a serviceable player.

Sean Smith, out of Utah

salary cap... cut him now then the hits the next 2 yrs are marginal.

I am surprised, but this is both an IR move and a future cap move

How does cuting him NOW make the next 2 years' cap hits marginal? vs say cuting him much late this season? Your comment makes no sense.

How is this an IR move?

Darius Butler has started 5 games for Carolina and the fans think he's playing great.

hmmmm...Did BB consult the fans in Charlotte before determining that he wasn't fit for the Patriots defensive backfield?

It's ironic how the media portrays the Patriots as boring. I supposed it is like being on a stakeout where nothing happens..........until it does and then all hell breaks lose. Milloy getting cut, Law holdout, Colvin signing (top FA LB that year), AD signing, Welker trade, Moss trade, Seymour trade, Sander and Merriweather in the same camp getting cut, Boddin....Like it or not they are aggressive.

Are you not entertained?

They were also high on Crable, Tate, and even O'Connell.

I'm not wasting my time looking up Crable (basketball/chicken legs) or Tate (ACL, not best on own team, etc...), since I'm sure most people remember those discussions well enough, but to say that the threads weren't all harps and rose petals for those players would be a significant understatement.

If Dowling can get on the field, I understand this move.

Arrington has proven himself to be a good starting CB, a trio of Mccourty, Dowling, Arrington is strong.

No Ras-I, then Molden is the nickel....... :bricks:

Adalius Thomas type situation dealt with quickly.

Bodden's been hurt and still is. He has not been happy playing in the slot, same as Thomas who did not like playing inside. Rather than have an unhappy player in the locker room who had received a big contract and who's recent play has not been at the level of his first season, I think BB cut his losses. Lastly Bodden has been in the league for nine years and last year he was on IR all season, played not a single down. This year he has not played a the level he did when he came here

Well that is very puzzling! Looks like Arrington will be the started again!

who played w/ Arrington hard hitter I can't think of his name he was a Maine blackbear I think... and Was also a Chicago Bear

I just remember another Arrington clone that is no longer w/ the team THE DUDE I speak of WAS a PAT last year or was it 2?

Brandon McGowan?

A little puzzling at this point in the season. Was Bodden really that bad? Or are we clearing cap room so we can sign Welker to that big fat extension?

I think they're 10-13M under the cap.

not totally but a little bit surprised

i met him after TB game in London and he was very very kind - autograph, photo together and we talked also a little bit

good luck for the future Leigh !

To be fair, Crable couldn't get on the field and Tate was dynamite before blowing out his knee in college. With the amount of picks we have every year you can't fault them taking a shot on a guy like Tate. Crable's situation was just unfortunate.
