McCourty's Struggles

You know what happens to rookies who have great seasons? Teams get 16 weeks (and at times more) to find their flaws. McCourty likes to trail and recover and teams are currently exploiting this off of the stuff the Lions used against him. With a lockout, the offensive coaches have a distinct advantage over McCourty's ability to receive coaching and improve. All great players have flawed games early on. They *all* get exploited once the tape reveals it. The difference is that player's ability to adjust. It's not a glaring or damning flaw but one nonetheless. Let the kid get some reps against this and see if he improves as the season progresses. Be patient. This team and season is still young.

Off coverage, ie, Safety Development. Subject to change.

The idiot post of the year runaway award. At the rate he is playing by next year he will make Darius Butler look like Darelle Revis !

I'd wager you breathe through your mouth. A lot. That's called a mouth breather, or slack jaw, whichever you prefer.

Also see: moron.

Weren't you the guy who started the "cut McCourty" thread after the game? Even if you're not, you might as well be the one.

The passes McCoutry had to cover, not even Revis could stop them. McCoutry still is the best tackling CB we have which is why he will always have a place on this team.

I Agree with Jays that give McCourty time because we know he has the talent to play in this league. It is disconcerting that QB's have so much confidence in thier WR's beating our DB's that they are basically just calling sideline go routes and putting the ball up there.

In saying that i disagree with Wiza here. If you watch the steelers v colts game and see how polamalu defended the fade vs how McCourty did. Polamalu was much more physical off the line then was in perfect position to break up the pass. I think as jays said McCourty is finding himself in a trail position alot and unlike last year he hasn't recovered, found the ball and intercepted it. Lets hope he is working his arse off to correct this as we need him and Bodden to be playing at a high level to help our pass rush get there.

Not good enough to play man coverage. Getting beat like Ike did to Tina.

The other receivers were not having anywhere near as much of a problem stopping the passes. Are you saying the QBs have been magically throwing 100% better against McCourty than against anyone else on the team?

you can call me crazy but i think a big reason why McCourty and the outher CB's are struggling is because Meriweather is not there to take the WR's heads off so they are not scard to go over the middle or over the top anymore

Speaking of this, it seems a certain polarizing pass rusher (in his third year) has only 1 sack in 3 games so far after having 6 sacks in his first 2 games a year ago. I'm sensing something similar to McCourty here.
(And that one sack was when the QB scrambled out of bounds for a 0 yard gain with Clay as the nearest defender).

Don't worry, guys. It's happening to other teams too.

No pass rush = no 8 second pass coverage

mcc is fine no qb pressure

yes the pats have garbage for pass rushers but it's pretty hard to rush the QB when the WR's are geting open in under 2 sec

McCourty???

Anyone else here wondering if Devin switched uniforms with his identical twin brother Jason in Tennessee this season? This is the only explanation I have. lol

Stats:

2011
Devin: 24 tckls, 0 sacks, 0 FF, 0 INTS, 3 PD
Jason: 9 tckls, 1 sack, 1 FF, 2 INTS, 3 PD

2010
Devin: 82 tckls, 1 sacks, 2 FF, 7 INTS, 17 PD
Jason: 47 tckls, 0 sack, 0 FF, 2 INTS, 10 PD

In all seriousness, I hope the real Devin McCourty steps up his game. I know it isn't all his fault. No pass rush or safety help over top can certainly make his job more difficult.

I hope this was somewhat entertaining, and let's hope he bounces back sooner rather than later.

Last year he had 6"4' Randy Moss to practice against in training camp, pre-season, and the first few weeks of the season. He gained comfort in defending taller receivers by practicing against Moss last year. (Asomugha also earned his stripes while covering Moss in practice while they were in Oakland)

This year, he is practicing against Welker/Branch. Midgets by todays NFL Wide Receiver standards. Perhaps this is why he's having bigger issues against tall WR's this year.

Sure, Brandon Marshall and Vincent Jackson are both very good players. But McCourty covered Marshall 2 games last year and didn't have any terrible games last year.

'gimme a break. The man can't play man consistently. It's not his game.

“I think Devin’s done a lot of good things for us. He’s really probably played as well as anybody we’ve had on defense,” said Belichick on a conference call with the media. “As always there are plays we’d all like to have back and do better on and all that, so Devin’s very competitive. He sets very high goals and standards for himself. I’m sure he feels that way too. He’s certainly one of our best players."

Bill Belichick

What a bunch of bull. He can't play man. BB is just blowing smoke up his arse so he doesn't completely lose it like Butler did.

Maybe we fans have to put up with this sh*t (and the defense IS sh*t) until it get's its reps in and they get comfortable.....that's my only hope. That somehow this defense will get better....and hey, maybe end up ranked 28th in overall defense. LOL!

Again, this is just nonsensical. The other corners aren't having the same struggles. It's not pass rush, it's not the QBs being preternaturally accurate, it's not the receivers. It's McCourty.

I agree. After last year, I think the coaches were ready to establish "McCourty Island" and I suspect it came into play in their scheme-change decision. Apparently he is not quite there yet. Hopefully he gets to be a true shut down corner at some point, but so far this year he has struggled. Press coverage does not seem to be a strong point for him either...

McCouryt's establishing the Island of "LOST".

Did i miss something? Have McCourty and Butler exchanged their numbers and McCourty was released?
