Re: The offficial Patriots Chargers POST game thread.

I've got a feeling that with the D as poor as it is just now with the stats, Bill is thinking, you score 1 (i.e. TD's), we'll score 2.

Re: The offficial Patriots Chargers POST game thread.

McCourty had a rough day but not only did Rivers have all day on a number of the completions but he got almost no safety help as far as I could see.

The pass defence wasn't great but I think it was more caused by a lack of pressure than poor coverage. We missed Mike Wright a bit.

Re: The offficial Patriots Chargers POST game thread.

Guys - When Rivers is forced to dump it to his RBs the way he was doing, it was because of the pressure the Pats were putting on him. The Pats were regularly pushing the pocket back and forcing him to dump it or to throw on the run. I think that Rivers only had 5 or 6 throws where he wasn't pressured.. Even on the one-handed TD grab by Jackson, there was pressure on Rivers.
I looked to me he had a clean pocket quite a bit of the time, i think it was the Down field coverage more than it was pressure. Especially after Dowling went out, but thats a whole nuther kettle of fish by golly.

Man just remembered bob sanders played today, dude was invisible out there.

Re: The offficial Patriots Chargers POST game thread.

The defense has been taking a beating after the 1st 2 weeks, but once again the red zone defense was immense.

Plus One, Good Sir. Is that ten characters?

Re: The offficial Patriots Chargers POST game thread.

Our team overcame some very shady officiating, something to be very proud of alot of teams let that tear them down. Especially after the 'injuries' by Chargers defenders and diving at Brady's knee. Amazing composure. Great team win today, defense helped out the O when they were in a slight funk and then the O picked up the defense when they started to break.

I was really mad about all the calls against our DB's, Then on the other side they mugged Branch on the 4th down no call, in the 3rd qtr, there was a 3rd down pass to Welker that was overthrown (the play before Mesko was hurt) on the play Gronk was tackled ....... no call outrageous given the calls on Bodden away from the play. I thought the PI on Arrington was pretty bad to he was playing the ball and reaching back...

I am good with the win of course and loved Big Vince's Int.

Re: The offficial Patriots Chargers POST game thread.

I know it's common as a fan to complain about penalties against your team, but c'mon those were some bad calls. Two weeks in a row at that. Also, some bad replays by ESPN and CBS. Seems like there were late penalties being called against the Pats but it was just because of bad TV coverage.

Re: The offficial Patriots Chargers POST game thread.

Our pass D still sucks. Henne last week and now Rivers this week. No pressure at all on Rivers besides three times by my count. One caused an INT and the other on Andersen's sack. Another on Ninko's blitz. Our run D also looked awful for the most part.

On the positive note, we did get turnovers and that goal line stand was great. That's twice now in two weeks we stopped teams at the goal line.

McCourty got beat like a red headed step child again. Some were great plays by Jackson/Rivers, but a good amount of them he should have made. McCourty set expectations pretty high based on his rookie season. He has yet to come close to live up to them. The season's young, so let's hope he turns it around.

You clearly have some warped definition of what constitutes pressure on a QB. As I said, I lost track of the number of dump offs to the RB and the number of times that Rivers was flushed from the pocket..

You're evaluation of McCourty also leaves a lot to be desired.

Re: The offficial Patriots Chargers POST game thread.

Here is one of my gripe against the NFL officials today. They call a ticky-tacky d-holding on Bodden.

Then Gronk gets pulled to the ground well beyond 5 yards and no call?

Re: The offficial Patriots Chargers POST game thread.

How bout Ocho getting involved?

HE caught 2 passes. The crowd went crazy

45 yards receiving...which was only good for 5th on the team! That's a sure sign of a good day for the offense.

Re: The offficial Patriots Chargers POST game thread.

The defense will be better after they've played together for awhile.

You do realize that the patriots have NEVER scored fewer than 30 points in an opening game at Gillette.

I really hope they do start gradually getting better. And yes, they score 30 points very often..in the regular season. When is the last time that they scored 30 in the playoffs?

Re: The offficial Patriots Chargers POST game thread.

I was very surprised that the Pats didn't adjust and start shadowing the RB on passing plays. I lost track of the number of dump-offs that Rivers was able to do on 3rd downs..

And 1st down, and 2nd down....

He was the dump-off kid today.

Did Anderson play much today? I know he had the sack at the end but I was wondering why weren't trying to put more pressure on Rivers. You see what happens when you do... those floaters of his are remarkably accurate when he has a pocket, but you get Sergio Brown plays when you get guys in his face.

Re: The offficial Patriots Chargers POST game thread.

I'm not sure which is worse, the officials or the kneed jerk, chicken littles in the game thread.

When you consider the insane throw and catches by the Chargers O, and the lopsided officiating, this game was nothing short of amazing that the Pats won. The Chargers may be the most talented team the Pats play all season. I'm proud of our teams composure after all the BS. If the officials aren't fired after not throwing a flag after the intentional, low hit on Brady, the NFL has lost the tiny shread of credibility that it has left. Wait a minute... they lost that during the lockout... sorry for the confusion.

McCourty was not only probed, but Them attempted to exploit him. I think that, given the extraordinary pressure, Devin McCourty did his job.
There's only so much that one man can do, McC seemed to keep the ball in front for the most part, and it could have been much much worse!

Re: The offficial Patriots Chargers POST game thread.

Has there ever been a better 2 games back to back by a QB?

Re: The offficial Patriots Chargers POST game thread.

Then I don't know what game you watched. Rivers was flushed from the pocket on several occasions, there were several occasions that he had D-linemen in front of him about to grab him or had their hands up in his passing lanes where he had to hit the dump off or take the sack..

The interceptions by Wilfork and Brown were a direct result of pressure. The fumble by Rivers was also a direct result of pressure.

Didnt they win like 19-17 in 06 opener vs bills and 09 opener 25-24? Not trying to be a dbag here or anything still for the most part they've done great in their openers.

I was in disbelief that Brady wasn't carted off the field after that hit on his legs the way his knee bent. He/we are Very Lucky.

Its always a slug fest when NE and SD play, but per usual we came out on top.
Yes, I cringed too. I was very happy to see TB get up no worse for the wear. Congrats to the Patriots on a good old fashioned ass whoopin' you put on my Chargers. The game wasn't as close as the score, imo. That's one helluva team you have there. Hopefully the Chargers get another shot at them in the playoffs.

Re: The offficial Patriots Chargers POST game thread.

I didn't see the hit, but I read it was pretty bad. This shlt should not be tolerated. Injuries ruin the game.

I can't even get the stats Brady is putting up in Madden.
I thought that play was illegal now. Is there a reason they didn't call the Chargers for a penalty there?

Re: The offficial Patriots Chargers POST game thread.

I thought plays like when Garay came in low on Brady just after her threw it were very illegal now? But the officials didn't even blink. That was bleepin scary. I hope Goodell fines the crap out of Garay.
I thought so too. I'm sure we'll hear something about it this week.
