Ryan Mallett is doomed

Like Bledsoe? The kid has talent, but they all do to some extent. What sets the best apart from the rest here isn't quite as easily achieved as some persist in assuming. Remember, KOC was so impressive they let him be the #2 after Brady went down. Then the next year an UDFA passed him on the depth chart and he ended up a captain on the JETS... Have to see them progress - never assume they will. And you have to see them perform against someone other than the future burger flippers of America - and perform consistently at that level before you begin to make a judgement. And the only similarity between what we do and what Arkansas did is terminology...which is helpful out of the gate but that's about it...

KOC, unlike Mallet, never mastered the offense. He kept bailing out on the plays like he did at SD State and never got over the bad habit wanting the play to break down so he could run away with the ball and Favre his way up the field (which he with that horrid OL at SD). He never had poise in the pocket, field vision, or the discipline to check down.

Mallet has exhibited all three elements.

Of course I could be wrong, but I am making my best educated guess here, not just based on that first exhibition game, but on the scale of the progress he is making in camp. He and Ocho have made the most progress, of anyone.

Johnny U wearing a Chargers uni was just wrong. And, there's nothing wrong the Chargers unis. TFB slinging it for anyone but the Flying Elvis will be a sore site. Hope it never happens.

you gotta learn to let go. TFB better not get a BIG contract if he wants to remain a PAT in 2015. Mallett is the future.

Mallett threw up ridiculous numbers against the best defenses in the country in the SEC, his "white-board" work drawing up plays with Gruden for the ESPN special solidified it with me. I think he even said in his combine press conference that his job and strength is to read defenses, he can't run, but he can make throws. He's going to be a Pro Bowler somewhere, hopefully for us someday!

If it was really that simple or that certain he wouldn't have fallen to us in the third, which is also the only reason he's here... And before you make the Brady Bledsoe comparison, Tom was competing with a guy who was never going to be a fit for this offense. Mallett will be competing with the guy they wrote the book on this offense for before they even knew he existed and the guy who has allowed them to win with it immediately and win while increasingly developing it and continually adapting it to personnel and consistently flourish.

I think too many fans these days worry more about projecting the future than embracing the present and in the process they lose rational perspective. Because of the nature of his game and ours, Brady can easily play another several seasons at an elite level barring catestrophic injury, which is the only kind he hasn't already proved he can consistently play well through - although he has at least proved he can return even from that. He is durable and dependable which would in and of itself be a huge consideration for a guy like Bill running a system like his going forward even if he was not also atop the elite tier consistently for a decade now (which is really what seperates the tiers - elite consistency)...

All anyone knows about Mallett to date is he has talent and therefore he has potential. You don't get to the NFL absent that.

"Character issues" are why he fell so far- fortunately for us, no teams bothered to do real research (along with not paying attention to the media one bit).

I, for one, am not worrying about the future but it doesn't stop me from projecting or musing about what will happen.

Having lived through the debacles of the early 90's (1-16), I will forever be grateful for what Brady did, and is doing for this organization, region, state, and community. Foxboro will never be the same again. Even at this point, 12 years later, I still marvel that we got Tom Brady.

From what I know about Kraft he'll keep TFB here as long as his skills are at a high level, if his skills are declining and they want to go with Mallett he'd have a talk with Brady asking him to retire gracefully. Brady doesnt need the money and I don't think he'd taint himself like Favre did.

If Brady played his final contract year like last year it would be Mallett that would leave.

Seriously, TFB is one of the greatest of ALL time, Mallett played in part of 1 preseason game, it's a tad early to annoint him.

People were pretty high on KOC after his first rookie ps appearance... Compared to Cassel he was the next coming... Mallett is kind of a boom or bust player in practice from what I've gleaned. What the coaches are looking for is building consistency and accuracy continues to be an issue. He will be tested a little more on the road against a Bucs team that is taking the PS seriously, although I anticipate Brady and most of the starters playing into the second quarter this week so he may still largely face and be playing with 2nd and 3rd stringers.

The challenge for him going forward will be to resist the urge to try and make things happen (and in his case with his arm rather than legs) in week 4 and somehow find a way to continue to develop as a scout team QB and inactive roster player who will get almost no reps let alone first team reps for the remainder of the season barring someone getting injured. We won't have a clue how he's developing until next year in TC and PS. It was pretty obvious that KOC had rested on his #2 by default laurels and/or reached his ceiling at that juncture. Although even moving up the ladder isn't necessarily indicative of future success, as Rohan Davey underscored. And he QB'd a national championship team in college and was once heralded as the MVP of NFLE... Couldn't run this offense, or apparently any at the pro level, to save his soul.

Until or unless we see Mallett in action against the kind of defenses that even give a GOAT pause he will remain little more than a projection. Sometimes you have to take the leap of faith, as say GB did with Rodgers. But I guarantee you Brady will never put Bill in that position. If Brady's career were to end here unexpectedly, Mallett might end up replacing him within a 2 year window. That's his only legitimate shot though. If Brady is still playing well in 2013, he will be playing with an extension and Mallett will be either traded for a first or equivalent or just gone because he didn't continue to progress.

I'm also very impressed with Mallet. If we'd gotten him two years latter, he would have been a great Brady successor.

But its too early. Even if we are ready to move on from Brady in four years, Mallett's rookie deal will be up.

I'd be extremely happy if we turned Mallet into a #1 pick (and unless he plays in real games, anything more is unrealistic).

Even better would be a scenario in which we get a #2 for Hoyer and keep Mallet backing an increasingly injury prone Brady.

My assessment won't change much if, as expected, Mallet looks decidedly less impressive against Tampa Bay. He's a rookie and has a lot to learn... but he has extraordinary natural gifts and incredible upside.

I suspect the Peyton Transition (which is looking to happen a bit earlier) will be equally as awkward. Two legends moving on... it's never easy.

Actually it might be easier for them...I don't see Curtis Painter challenging Peyton...Do you really think Peyton would let them draft a QB high enough who might replace him....It would make the Brett Favre-Aaron Rodgers rivalry (" I'm not here to teach him") seem like kids play....

The Mo doth protest too much. Let's see how it plays out. One thing's for sure: we have a GREAT QB situation. Too early for Canton to call on Mallett, but no one's buying your KOC analogy, with good reason. As long as Brady continues to perform and Mallett continues to improve, we are set up for the long term. However, ASSUMING MALLETT DEVELOPS WELL, if you think a 38 year old TB is going to get paid in NE (regardless of his level of performance) over a 26 year old Mallett (even without significant experience), well then, I just disagree with you.

I liked almost everything he did, but the eye opener was him scrambling to his right and throwing on the run. He showed decent speed doing that, and while his throw was high as I recall, he looked very natural throwing at full speed and he threw it with a lot of mustard. I'd like to see him get more time this preseason.

From the looks of it, Jenkins actually got his hands on the ball, but it was just too strong a throw for him to corral it in and stay in bounds.

But I give him tonsof credit for making that throw: the best he would have picked up with his feet is one or two yards, but he saw a basically free chance at the end zone (he could put that throw where only Jenkins had a play on it), and it very nearly paid off handsomely.

My first thought was "he's more mobile than advertised". That wasn't a play we're used to seeing around here.

I think the Malletites doth protest too much... What's that saying, timing is everything. Brady is 34 years old and will get extended again before he's 36... Mallett won't start a game or play any meaningful snaps in the interim unless Brady gets knocked out. He will be prominently featured in the preseason and either traded or cut by the time he's 25. Because barring catestrophic injury the face of the franchise will remain at the helm until he's in his late 30's if not a little beyond.

So lets see... we learned that Mallett will either be Brady's future successor or that he will be trade bait.

Shocking revelations.

If he develops into a STUD Trade bait BS is over; we have our future QB and I really do not think BB would leave a bitter taste in the Franchise's mouth by giving up a potential Franchise QB for the Pats. TFB could be had cheaply if he still wants to compete after 2014. I know this is an early preclusion, but it is very realistic given Mallett's progression over the next 4 yrs. Money is of no concequence to brady I am sure he would love to compete for a spot

All I know is that if Brady was not on the sidelines when Bledsoe took the shot to the ribs 2001 never happens. If Brady sustains a horrible hit we now have 2 QB's who can reasonably with some tweaks carry the team forward. With some luck perhaps we go far - who knows - but we have them which is comforting.

Do any other teams in the league have 2 QB's like ours on the bench?

If I got a super deal to trade Hoyer (2nd or 3rd round minimum pick) and I knew I could bring in a vet QB for this year I would strongly consider trading Hoyer. I would consider trading Hoyer right to the trade deadline.

Hopefully Mallett will be up to speed by then, but I love the idea, get a QB desperate team who's coach might be out of a job if they don't get it together, who would be willing to mortgage those future picks which won't matter anyway if he gets fired, and trade Hoyer in exchange for that loot!

As of right now, Hoyer is a massive upgrade over Mallet.

And any veteran QB you could scrape off the dung heap would be a massive downgrade from Hoyer...

I get some of these people, immaturity is what it is. But are we loaded with 12 year olds lately?

It's a preclusion alright... We have our future QB, he just also happens to be our past and present QB...and your right that Bill would not leave a bitter taste in the Franchise's mouth by giving him up for a prospect... Your problem is nothing is of consequence to you and you're projecting that mindset onto rational adults.
