Making the case for Osi Umenyiora

As much as this trade makes my face crinkle in excitement, the more I realize this won't happen. I just can't see BB going through with this, NFL.com says that either New England, Ravens and some other AFC teams.

If Baltimore paired him with SUGGS.... glad we don't play them this season

Maybe in the playoffs . . .

True. And thats where the Ravens are really good.

Touche. Let's not forget, however, that they thumped the Pats in the playoffs. I don't think anybody on this board can talk about any other team in the playoffs considering the recent history of the Pats in said playoffs. They are 0-3 in the last three playoff games. That's just about identical to the Ravens in that span.

Five teams in the hunt and we aren't mentioned. Doesn't mean we aren't, but the fact is a couple of those teams have more than $20M in cap space remaining and one of those has his old DC as it's HC.

The five teams that have expressed an interest are the St. Louis Rams, the San Diego Chargers, the Seattle Seahawks, the Denver Broncos and the Baltimore Ravens. It is not known which of the teams are the most interested, though a league source suggested the Ravens were unlikely and a source in Seattle said it was doubtful the Seahawks would be willing to give up a high pick and pay Umenyiora what he wants, too.

That combination seems to be the problem. Teams aren’t likely to give up first-round picks anymore, especially now that the rookie salary cap makes those picks much more affordable. To give up a pick that valuable and pay a 29-year-old defensive end with some recent injury issues a contract worth $10 million per year is probably for too much for most teams to stomach.

A few sources believe the team to watch in this is the Rams, where the obvious tie is their coach - former Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. He knows what Umenyiora can do and how to use him, he knows Umenyiora will gladly play for him, and the Rams reportedly have plenty of cap room to spend.

I would like this guy to be on the Pats..imagine that pass rush..ugh..but it' not going to happen. They want too much

Exactly. Rexy would drop his cheeseburger and do a backflip if this happened.

At this point, I think OU's attitude regarding his contract was going to be an issue for the Pats FO. Although...let's face it...business us business.

I'll just have to file this pipe dream away with the others.....i.e. Julius Peppers, Larry Fitzgerald ...etc.

Man, doesn't it seem like we have one of the "pipe dreams" once every six months or so?

Schefter just twitted.

The more people around the league talk, the more obvious is it the Giants will not get back a first-round pick for Osi Umenyiora. Next move.

I would consider a 2nd round pick for him.

Someone will get him no doubt now. I dont think BB would even give a second rounder for him unfortunately though.

I've been pimping for Osi since FA started but I gave up on that when it was brought to light that Condon is his agent.

Sad because I truly believe he is the missing link...

I think that the Patriots woudl give up one of the 2nd rounders next year for him and maybe a conditional in 2013.

But the size of his contract is the problem. There is no cap space for him unless there is a major restructure or two. So, I don't see it happening here.

BB is probably a bit gun shy after the AH failure.......that plus he has a value system that he usually stics pretty close to....Osi may be outside that value, his agent is another story entirely.

If they can sign Mankins long term and cut Sanders there are two moves that make Osi a Patriot. Mankins at $8m and remove Sanders approx. $3m and you have $5m plus what they have left over. You might restructure Bodden and Ghost for another year or two which is not a bad thing. Worse case scenario, Morris is dropped.

Send Brace to the Giants as part of the package would help as well. His second round contract still has some bucks.

This Osi guy is a huge piece. I hope Nick is not sleeping as per usual.

BB is going to urinate away that second rounder for a bunch 4ths and 5ths in 2014 anyway once he trades it to a 2013 1st. Meanwhile back at the ranch, TB has found some gray hairs.

I want Osi too, but you are an endless record with your 'waste picks' for 4th and 5th's blah, blah, blah. We still draft more players than other teams, draft more high round players than other teams, all while being near the bottom of each round with our own picks.

And those 4th and 5th's just got us Haynesworth and Ocho. We get it, the draft never matches your mocks. get over it.
