Caldwell, Brown, Gaffney, and Jackson

However, I would like to see more of Jackson and Gaffney.

BTW, I think Gaffney is dependable enough so that Gabriel wasn't even kept as insurance.

Ummm what sqad was worse than this one that we won with?

Keep convincing yourself that the Patriots have won with worse wide receivers. I'm not buying it.

Have to disagree. The Troy Brown of 01 was much better than the
Troy Brown of 06. He played at a pro-bowl level. Not sure if he made it
or not. R. Caldwell vs D. Patten. Different skills. Pretty similiar results.
We've got nothing out of Gaffney and Jackson. Hard to count on them.
We do have a stronger running game and much more talent at wr. Not
saying we can't win it. Just, that our wr's aren't better.

I'm not sure we've won with worse WR but it's a mistake to focus just on that unit. Even if this year's WR are worse, which I'll go with, the TE, RB, QB, OL are all better than 2001.

keep on drinking the kool aid it aint going to happen with those stiffs

One of (or both) Gaffney or Jackson are seriously needed to step up and pair with Reche as downfield threats. Stretching the field will take some heat off of Brady and the running game. Troy and Faulk can't do it -- they're short zone players. And before it's suggested -- Watson is NOT a WR.

The Gabriel release is fine. More practice reps for Brady and that other WR (Gaffney/Jackson). Me thinks timing between QB and WR is important in keeping drives alive.

Troy Brown was a special teamer and 3rd down receiver.

I think it was only his second year as starter.

Patten was a castoff as you posters love to call them, picked up off the trash heap.

I swear to God, I think our 3rd receiver by years end was Fred Coleman who had 2 catches.

Some Patriots historian needs to help me out, what WRs made it to the end for the Pats.

I know Glenn was booted and I swear Charles Johnson and Smalls were cut.

Can't remember about Emanuel. That leaves 3 WR on the roster for the playoffs? That can't be right.

Small and Emanuel were cut during the season.. Johnson, was thrid and Freddie Boom boom Coleman was our 4th.. with patten, and brown as the wide outs, plus jermaine wiggns and rod rutledge as our tight ends..

2001 Receptions by wr's:

Brown-101
Patten-51
Glenn-14
C. Johnson-14
Small-4
Emanuel-4
Coleman-2
Jackson-2
(Brady and Cox each had 1 also).

In the playoffs, only Brown, Patten, and Johnson caught balls.

Yes, Troy then is better than almost anything we put out there now, but I'd take Gafney, Jackson, Reche, and Brown (06) over Brown (01), Patten, Johnson, Small, Emanuel, and Coleman.

I thought both Johnson and Smalls were cut. I guess Johnson was deemphasized.

If you recall, we had a very talented wide receiver named Glenn who was dropped unceremoniously.

The only "better" that counts is better team play contributing to wins.

Our current offense isn't clicking, though the stats aren't bad. Sometimes cutting a player and cracking the whip are what's needed.

I bet coaching, game planning and play calling are on the "to do" list also.

Exactly. People who complain about our WR's now or a 'lack of talent' are simply trying to ignore McDaniel's ineptitude.

I disagree. Brady had strong chemistry with Brown and Patten. Bother were great players.

What has Gaffney shown that makes you think he's better than our previous WRs?

He's 8 games into the offense, totalling 6 catches for 101 yards. Gabriel's first 8 games totaled 24 for 312 yards and 3 TDs. No, I don't think the Pats have ever won with worse WRs because frankly I don't think we've ever had a worse group of WRs until now. One proven WR (Brown, who is also playing DB), one semi-proven Caldwell, and two guys that have done next to nothing. You'd be hard pressed to find a Pats team that has won with worse.

How do you define "worse"? Those receivers, with three games left in the year, were all on the same page and made plays when they had to. That dynamic has been so inconsistent, and frankly absent at times (see Miami game) that I thinik this crop is "worse" for their inconsistency.

Yea McDaniels causes all those penalties especially the d-holding and pass interference ones, dropped balls, turnovers and bad field position... McDaniels has become a convenient scapegoat for a very complex problem.

I'd rather have one really excellent car (Brown '01) than several pretty good ones. Brown's '01 season may have been unusual for him, but he was consistent all year.

Anyone doing a 2001 comparison forgets how solid Patten was that year. Generously speaking, 2006 Caldwell (our #1) is MAYBE the equivalent of the 2001 Patten (then our #2).

So with that said, who is this year's equivalent of the 2001 Brown (the 2001 #1)?

How can you forget the immortal exploits of Shockmain Davis??
