Lee Smith and Alge Crumpler.

There's only one thing that worries me about Smith....the waiver wire. Because we're gonna more than likely have to try and sneak him onto the practice squad. Best case scenario, Crumpler, Gronk and Aaron are all healthy, and able to go. And I cant see us keeping 4 at this position on the 53, considering how good each of those are at what they do. So, the issue with Smith will be hoping some other team doesnt cherry pick him off the wire. Face it, our 4th best TE is someone else's 2nd. Otherwise, I really like the pick as well as the player. He wont do us any good playing for Cleveland next year.

If Smith shows potential and everyone is healthy, NE will keep all 4 on the roster. Of that I am sure.

I wasnt sure about that, but youre sounding pretty confident. We'll likely be keeping an extra QB this year, so there's potentially two pretty important spots we're losing depth somewhere else. Hopefully, this year we'll have better luck along the Dline and not have to keep 19 bodies on the roster to fill those roles.

I see two likely areas to find those spots. Due to OL issues, NE kept an extra OG/C for most of the year. And it also appears that NE is going to trim back to 4 RBs as well.

No possible way Smith makes it to the practice squad. The only possible senario I can see where the pats can keep all four TE's is for Crumpler to go on the PUP list and Smith gets his shot on the roster. Then if Smith has not proven himself by the PUP deadline, Smith comes up lame go's to IR and Crump comes off the PUP list to the roster. If Smith has proven himself he stays and crump go's to IR or cut.

Again, not a chance.

Keeping 4 TEs isn't that hard when you play two a lot, especially if rosters expand in the new CBA.

And especially when you are clearly making an effort to add some toughness to your offense. I personally think NE drafted Lee with the intention of moving to a 4 TE roster, and that Crumpler will be replaced next year with another relatively high draftee.

Yeah, keeping 4 TEs makes a heck of lot more sense than keeping 6 (non-Slater) WRs, which plenty of people want to do now. The average play last season had 1.7 TEs and 2.1 WRs on the field, so 4 TEs and 5 WRs makes plenty of sense from that standpoint.

His skills are so duplicative of Crumpler's that it's hard for me to see him as anything other than Crumpler insurance/eventual replacement. You don't need two dreadnoughts at TE.

Roster spots:
DB-10
LB-8
Dl-7
these have been standard with BB
p-1
k-1
ls-1
If your Longsnaper is so critical to p,k,fg,teams it would not be wise to risk his injury playing a second possition. In fact it is wise to have a back up option.(Smith)
That leaves 25 more.
ol-9
rb-4
qb-3
that leaves 9 spots for wr,te, and that reflects not resigning a couple st standout from 2010.
Wr locks,Welker,Branch,Tate,Price,Edelman, leaves us with 4 spots left.
TE locks,Gronkowski,Hernandez, leves us with 2 spots left.
Options for the last 2 spots,Crumpler,Smith,White and Slater the two top gunners, Free agent WR (deep threat),extra DL...
This breakdown leaves not one spot for ST other that the necisary three.
With only 2 spots left I doubt if they both go to TE.
My opinion 1TE, 1 free agent-trade deep threat WR.

Again, not a chance.

Not a chance what?
Smith doesn't make it to the practice squad? 100%
Crump go's to PUP with his shoulder injury? 50/50%
Smith get's a chance on the roster? 50/50%
Smith out preforms Crump? 50/50%
Smith does not make the cut? 50/50%

Crumpler will not be cut. I'm not sure why you are so worried about his shoulder, I've read and heard nothing remotely concerning about it.

Alge Crumpler had serious shoulder surgery

Bad news for Alge Crumpler (though sounds like this bad news actually reached him several months ago). Shalise Manza Young of the Boston Globe reports that “Crumpler underwent shoulder surgery in late January for a ‘significant’ injury to the joint. He is currently rehabbing the shoulder but it is unclear when he'll be back at full strength.”

Crumpler’s rehab will almost certainly determine his fate in New England – and possibly the entire NFL. When you’re a 33-year-old No. 3 tight end, teams generally don’t wait long for you to get healthy.

You make a good point!

That QB of ours had knee surgery nearly 3 seasons ago, why haven't we cut him yet?

Apples and oranges
Bradys injury is 3 yrs. removed and that knee doesn't take a pounding every play.
Crumplers injury is 3 mos. removed and being a "BLOCKING TE" that shoulder will take a beating every play.
I have to figure that was obvious to you. What isn't obvious to me is why you asked it.
Also brady had 1yr. off not to mention the adjustment period when he came back.

If the Pats switch to more 2 TE sets I could see all 4 TE's in. Crumpler and Smith for blocking. Gronk and Hernandez for receiving.
