Patriots sign Jonathon Crompton to PS

As someone who watched him quite a bit at Tennessee during the 2009 season, I can honestly say that Crompton is awful.

As someone who generally likes your sports knowledge I can honestly say this signing must suck.;)

We're all assuming they took him to be a quarterback. But everybody thought the same thing when they took Edelman. Any chance they might be looking at him for another position? Is he fast or elusive as a running type quarterback?

Did anyone really think they were taking Edleman to be a QB?

I'm with everyone that said Crompton sucked in college, he was awful

Jonathan Crompton, Tennessee, NFL Draft - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com
Analysis Accuracy: Made significant improvements in this area as a senior, but remains highly inconsistent. Threw accurately to all levels at times as a senior, but struggled mightily with accuracy throughout his early career, including as a junior. Good timing and accuracy to hit the receiver in stride on the slant, dig and deep crossing routes. Good touch to place the ball between the linebacker and safety down the seam or on wheel routes. Good touch and accuracy for the dump-off routes to the back, allowing them to make the catch easily and head upfield.

Arm Strength: Strong arm. Can make every NFL throw without extending his windup. Puts enough zip on his underneath throws to fit through the tight winds of an NFL defense, including placing the deep out from the opposite hash. Good trajectory on the deep ball. Ball comes down at an angle that is easy to track and catch, but doesn't hang in the air. If he struggles in the NFL, it won't be due to a lack of arm strength.
Setup/Release: Efficient drop back from center and set up. Sells the play-action. Throws with good balance and steps into his passes. Compact windup and a quick release doesn't allow defenders much time to react. The ball comes out of his hand quickly and with good trajectory. Tight spirals that are easy for his receivers to track and catch.

Reading Defense: At least some of the improvement he showed as a senior came with limiting the number of reads he was asked to make. Has developed a great deal in terms of poise and reading defenses, but still locks on to his primary target early in the route. Rarely looks off the safety. Too often trusts his arm-strength and accuracy and throws the ball into coverage. Became more willing to throw the ball away as the year went on. Good poise in the pocket. Willing to step up in the pocket and take the hit to complete the throw.
On the Move: Among his most impressive traits. Good balance on the rollout. Keeps his eyes downfield and has the arm strength and accuracy to attack in the short and intermediate levels. Squares his shoulders and fires the ball with good trajectory and accuracy. Will occasionally throw back across his body, but has enough zip to fit balls in tight windows. Not a true threat as a scrambler, but can buy time and escape the pocket when necessary. Good size and strength for the quarterback sneak.

Intangibles (On/off field leadership, competitive fire, work habits, off-field issues, intelligence, ability to play through pain)

Why was Crompton drafted in the 5th round if he was even this awful in college? Even Zac Robinson, who was quite close to being Mr. Irrelevant, didn't get all of this criticism (well, that is, until he got on the practice field and we saw how terrible he is).

Crompton was one of the few live arms in the draft that didn't play in a spread offense. Add that to the fact that the Tennessee program has been imploding the last half a decade and no doubt San Diego and now New England think they could correct some bad habits that weren't ironed out in college.

Reading his bio he's basically a more polished Kevin O'Connell.

Yes, he reportedly showed significant improvement from his junior to senior season after Lane Kiffin brought in a QB coach developed under Steve Spurrier, and Drew Brees' old Purdue OC to work him in a Pro-style offense. Crompton had a good week for scouts at Texas v. Nation. San Diego took a flyer on him, and signed him to their PSquad after cut downs. This is a kid who had mechanical flaws that Tennessee under Kiffin started to address, he's filling a spot on the PSquad that has been open two weeks. Can't hurt to take a more detailed test drive.

Atlanta apparently did, and they have a BB-trained GM. :p

Hello to all...Have always been a Patriots fan, have been lurking for awhile but wanted to jump out of lurking to comment on Crompton. I read some earlier posts from fans who saw Crompton play in Tennessee..while I agree Crompton had an awful 2008 season..I can't agree that Crompton is an awful QB.
I became a fan of Crompton's in 2008 , he had a terrible season , and the fans and the media voiced their disapproval viciously. He didn't play his best that year..the team as a whole was pretty disappointing but you could see the kid had the ability to be a good QB. Still it was the way he handled the adversity that year that won me over as a fan . And I was thrilled to watch his phenomenal turn around in 2009.
I'd be the first to admit Crompton has some developing to do and perhaps will never be another Tom Brady or Payton Manning ..but given a more steady coaching environment then he dealt with at UT , he very well could be a top NFL QB. This kid has talent, determination, dedication and even when being booed by 120,000 fans at UT , he still gave 110 %. I hope my fellow Patriot fans will give him a chance to warm up before deciding he isn't worthy of wearing the Patriot uniform or holding a clipboard for a couple years.

There are a lot of articles out there about Crompton's poor performance at UT..here are a couple articles that give a better picture of the situation he faced at UT.

Probably doesn't amount to much but considering we had a vacancy on the PS, can't hurt to have a look. BB has a track record of developing QBs so why not? It's extremely low-risk, high-reward. Having said that much, I doubt Hoyer loses any sleep over it.
