A look at the numbers of all the games played this year shows how truly close it is between good teams and mediocre teams - There are no truly Elite teams this year.

104 Games played thus far
31 of those games were decided by 3 points or fewer
That equals nearly 30% of all games played!

AFC East teams games are no exception

6 of 18 games played by the AFC East teams were decided by 3 points or less
That is nearly 34% of all East games played
5 of those AFC East team's games in weeks 6 & 7 were won by 3 points or less - an 84% rate

The biggest margin during those weeks was the Jets winning by a HUGE 4 points against Denver

Had Buffalo not given Miami an intentional safety in the first game the percentage of close AFC East team's games would have been even bigger

IIAC You would have to go back to the early 90s to find a year with so many games decided so closely

Welcome to the PFL,The 'Parity Football League' - Its not going away too soon IMO

Goodell is in heaven this season...

You have to go back forty years to 1970 for the last time the NFL did not have a team start the season 4-0. At least there was an upside; we didn't have to see or hear Mercury Morris.

The strange thing is that the last few years it was starting to seem as if there was less and less parity. Each of the last five seasons there was at least one team that started 10-0, and in the last three seasons there has been a 13-0, 14-0, and 16-0 team. That trend came to a screeching halt this year.

So while some are concerned about various aspects of the Pats game because they don't stand up to how the team looked in those areas in previous years, perhaps we should focus more on comparisons to other teams - and more specifically, what weaknesses those other teams have. While some might say the Pats could easily be 3-3, the very same thing could be said about the two other 5-1 teams.

Well we know there won't be three 10-1 teams this year because the Pats will also play the Steelers and the Jets. I suppose there is more parity this year than previously, but these trends tend to equalize.
Perhaps the poor free agent market coupled with several high talent players being RFAs this year prevented too large of a talent shift and has affected this year's overall results.
