Good post.
It looks like we are getting pretty much the same guy back, but with lowered expectations and a humbled attitude.

But dont let the facts get in the way, we will definitely hear loudly from the "Sky Am Falling" crowd. Facts be damned.

Love Deion

Just don't ask for 83 back...you had your chance to keep it

You mean the I-wanna-BIG-prima-donna-WR crowd?

I don't get this size obsession. Big WRs usually come with Big Baggage and the Patriots just dumped one of the best behaved of all the big WRs.

Thanks to 'disco' for providing those stats. HOWEVER

Many posters keep putting up links to youtube vids of Meon playing great. Others point to how awesome he was with Brady when he was here before. Then there are those who state that he is younger than Moss. I'm simply not excited about this move YET. Personally, I was looking forward to seeing what the youngsters could do.

I was never a big Moss fan, but im even less of a Branch fan. IMHO, the way he left was the complete opposite of the 'Patriot way'. If he scores 12 TDs, and helps the team win it all, i'll happily say thanks for the help, but thats it. I have no tolerance for players who pull the kind of crap he did the last time he was here. Bill just got rid of one problem, and im surprised by this move. I suppose Bill wasnt as p*ssed at Branch as I was.

Im going to the store to buy more kool-aid...In Bill I trust

Bill would be the first to tell you it's a business. And in regard to surprise moves re: the "Patriot way", I thought that was put to rest after the Dillon and Moss acquisitions.

I agree totally about Meon. I don't like him at all as a former Pat.

But he can still play a role and let us spread the ball. And we can probably get 2-3 years out of him on his best behavior the way we did with Moss and then cut him loose when the time comes.

The thing people don't seem to get is that Moss was always a reward versus liability situation and the reason he is gone is that the liability side of the equation finally caught up rapidly to the reward side of the situation and he simply had to go, end of story, to prevent a distraction this season. That is what the fanboys don't seem to appreciate. They seem to believe cutting Moss was a mistake, or an option, when in fact it was essential.

When Meon gets to the point that he is a distraction he will be rapidly cut loose as well; but for this season I see him playing with a chip on his shoulder...

It is distasteful to bring in malcontents for sure but unfortunately there are very few untainted players anymore in the NFL. It is a 'me first' league.

Nothing like a player who's learned the grass isn't always greener. I'm sure BB's made his expectations clear and obviously Deion's ok with whatever those are. There's still gas in his tank and once TFB starts throwing to him they'll find their mojo again, maybe not every time but enough times to make it worthwhile. Meon's been replaced by Deion:singing:

First let me say that I like the trade for a WR that has experience at the position and in the Pats system.

I do have an objection to the OP. I looked at Branch's stats and in 2009 and so far this season Branch is averaging 9.5 YPC on 58 catches. Every season before 2009 he was over 11 YPC. Even when he was banged up or recovering from injury. There are probably extenuating circumstances. I'm just saying Branch's production has dropped off in the last year or so and one should not pretend otherwise.

Using cumulative stats from several years to decrease the effect of a significant differance in production is the exact opposite of the purpose of statistical measure. My argument is only with the OPs use of stats not with anyones expectations of Branch.

i gotta say, i thought those stats were gonna be a lot different

looking at those though, i feel much more confident about this trade

is branch the same player? no....is he that much worse? not from those stats

wait, so Brady didn't actually make him 100x better than he really was?

Some of you guys need to get real.

We are not getting back the same player who left here. Its a risk at this stage and a 4th round pick for him seems very steep.

I'm glad he is back and I'm hoping that he is the same player that was here a couple of years back but history is just that history. Right now this is like giving up a 4th round pick for somebody like Laverneus Coles and I don't think anybody would be happy about that.

Branch struck the iron while it was hot and did it at the detriment of the team. That was hard to swallow as a fan. But his he and his agent knew he would never have a better chance at a big payday than after being a SB MVP. Branch was never worth a 1st! I am glad we got one. Branch fills a need. He will catch 50, 60 balls in the intermediate area and round off the receiving core. Welker, Edelman underneath, Tate has the wheels to stretch the field. It is a good fit strictly from a skills perspective.

The bonus is that Brady was always in tune with Branch over a long period of time, so he will likely contribute immediately.

Brady summed it up pretty well:

You don’t replace with one guy Randy’s talents on the field, but you replace it with the strengths of other players. Randy certainly has his strengths, but Wes (Welker) has his strengths, the tight ends have their strengths… it’s up to the coaching staff to determine what players do best. It may be a little different from what we’ve seen, but we can definitely still move the football.”

BostonHerald.com - Blogs: Rap Sheet Blog Archive Patriots QB Tom Brady wakes up early to discuss the trade for Deion Branch and that same old Moss report

His exact comments about Branch sound very positive but also realistic.

I would have loved to have that "malcontent" Bolden for that same 4th rounder and probably less money than Branch. Or maybe a seventh for TJ. Yes this "fan-boy" Cousin D.W. says Moss did 13 TDs last year and won a game or two. By all accounts internally (not from Felger, Casserley or those other morons) he was a good soldier. If Branch does not do at least 9 TDs for us this year (Moss has four) this is a typical Pats panic WR fail pick up (see Holt, Galloway, Gabriel).

Stave Smith for a fourth rounder makes sense and would be doable in the shape Carolina is in (I might do a three for him without blinking). Stallworth will be back on the field in a few games. I respect him deep down field and with Moss picked up late in 07, Stallworth he was not used correctly. He had 46 receptions and three TDs in a after-thought roll in 07. Ozzie would take a fourth for him.

Kevin Curtis can be had for NADA. 4.3 SPEED and 77 receptions in 2007. He picks up our system right away as he is smart and had a 48 wonderlic and same age as Branch. Speaking of that, Stallworth is younger than Branch and yes Betsy, he knows our system a little fresher than Branch.

So you're saying that Branch is a fail if he doesn't put up the same numbers as Moss has been? My good sir, YOU FAIL
