Peyton whining again

manning gave an interview with nfl.com a few weeks back and said the same thing and also added that a lot of the later round picks and undrafted players like jeff saturday wouldve never gotten into the league if there were reduced preseason games because the games 3 and 4 are really where the roster is decided . so i have to agree with him

DeOssie said the same thing on the radio. Said that back in his day there was even more time for unknowns to develop and impress than today. Now look at reducing that window. The 18 game season means less time to teach and practise. And less games that don't count to practise and show your stuff at full speed.

Think of all the Patriot unknonws who given a chance developed.

The expansed season will instead motivate coaches to keep high draft busts like Chad Jackson, Bethel Johnson, Marquise Hill, etc. instead of UDFAs and late round slow developers. This can be mitigated a bit were rosters to expand but the opportunity to actually PLAY in the missing pre-season games lost.

None of us fans will miss paying full price for 2 pre-season games turning into games that count. It's the implications for player development that will affect the long term product on the field.

Manning's dead on, and can we stop acting like children? If Brady says this, everyone would agree and rightfully so. If our defense looks THIS lost, imagine how lost they would look with extra practice time gone, 2 weeks worth. That's a whole lot gameplanning that would never happen, and the quality of play around the league will suffer. Injuries will go up, etc.

I think Goodell's issue is he does too much. It wasn't bad for him to bring discipline to the league. What's bad is forcing the NFL into europe (trying, and is it really havin that much success?) and now this? Cmon man. Completely trying to fix something that's not broke. Maybe n 10 + years or so if the format is boring we can change it. But why now?

I disagree...... The real practice you get is in a game.

more games ='s more $$$$$$$

Everybody wins.... Players win, The League wins, The Organization wins and most of all the fans win.

More real games are an awesome idea.

If you are a player... .you get more $$$$ for more games. The player can retire sooner.

51...... You look at this very myopically. Open your eyes and recognize the grander picture. Your ignorance blinds you 51.:bricks:

I speak the truth

What's wrong with what he said? He said he wants to be able to improve and that he needs the off season to do so to his satisfaction. He comes across as caring about the product that goes on the field, which I'd think most fans would find positive.

Given the choice of better product on the field vs two more games that mean something as opposed to paying full freight for pre-season games, most fans will go with diluting the product. This dilution will hurt the better franchises more. Why? Because the best teams have to look elsewhere than high draft picks each round and then must develop these less heralded guys to stay competitive. The expanded season narrows the window to develop as an unknown and to show your stuff vs real NFL teams before the games count.

Peyton isn't whining. He's stating the stance of most players and probably most people who aren't owners or season ticket holders.
It sounds like the 18 game season is coming regardless, but I for one won't be happy about it.

In this case, Manning is right. Offseason workouts allow a team to fine tune and establish sync with one another. Which is particularly important for receivers and QBs. The 18 game season is all about greed. Regular season tickets and games generate more revenue than preseason. Financially 18 games makes sense for the NFL. But footballwise it's a raw deal for the players. Not just for preparation time but also exposing them to greater injury risks and weardown over the course of a longer season.

Less preseason means less time for rookies to get a feel for real action and more problems getting acclimated to the NFL

You can bet that many rookies in the future wil struggle in the regular season with less time to get a realistic approach to the game.

Peyton hasn't whined for a bit; he was due another one

18 games in a regular season.... kills Peyton's chances of ever winning another SB Ring....... (That is his beef)

The SB they did win was created because of a Phantom PI call that was re cocckulous..... and the yellow flag was thrown.

We got lucky w/ That Tuck call..... but we did win 2 other SB's

just sayin

So the definition of luck is the correct interpretation of a rule, a rule called numerous times that 2001 seaon, including AGAINST the Pats in game 2, a call that cost them the game?

Does anyone here actually FOLLOW football?

The Tuck Rule..... (I did not think it was a tuck) You did????

Phantom PI bogus call

Phantom PI bogus call

I did.

I was at the Jets game when it was called against the Pats for Testaverde and I watched on TV when Brady got the call. The rule was designed to remove judgement and ambiguity. It did that.

I did not know that aspect of the rule.....

in any event both things are in the past. Colts Phantom PI and our Tuck

WOW...You quite obviously never actually played a game of real football. The massive toll it takes on the human body over time is irreversible. The players can "retire sooner" because they have to retire sooner.

Using your "logic", there's no reason why they shouldn't play 82 games, like in the NBA. You speak the truth as only a fool would see it.

If you're defining the universe of "fans" as "season ticket holders" you might have a point, but, with all deference to those who shell out the money for season tickets, they are a relatively small portion of the fans who comprise the TV revenue base of the NFL (there are no more than 1.5 million season ticket holders, even if 32 teams have 50,000 season ticket holders each). I think the other 50,000,000 or so viewers would take a different perspective.

yes they would.....

I am very aware of all of that!!!!! The massive influx of money generated a fair portion (will go to better retirement benefits etc... health perks, etc.. Their benefits will increase (retirement etc...)

Great, so the players should be supporting this in droves, but they aren't. Don't try to tell other people what's good for them. We all expect that this will happen, but I hope the players take the owners for every cent. The players, for their part, will pay with their bodies.

Traditionalists like yourself are the epitome example of the fear of change. You like MLB officials especially (Bud Selig) are afraid and are unwilling to change aspects of the game/season that would ultimately make it better.

I use Baseball because they are not taking the proper initiative (to make the game better and more exciting) you are no different than those weasels in power

Is it just me?
His own union are the ones trying to reduce offseason workouts. I have no doubt that ownership would love to expand the season to 18 games and have just as many offseason workouts. So I guess his only recourse is to talk to the Colts' union rep, but I can't imagine him having much success down that avenue.

I actually don't understand the more $$$ argument either. The player's expect their paycheck to be bumped?

There's a salary, and then there are disbursements. The idea that 2 more paychecks equals more $$$ is kinda dumb, but I keep hearing football players say this, like they don't realize the significance of a salary.

We were reviewing the financial collapse in Greece last semester and one of the arguments against the people was that they received a 13th monthly salary at Christmastime. It was done by tradition. But $7.5k average salary divided by 13 is the same as a $7.5k salary divided by 12. Otherwise, if paychecks mattered, the guy working at McD's getting paid 52 a year has it made.

Yeah, I think revenue will increase from television (obviously ticket sales won't matter because the owners force people to buy preseason tix). But it's not a slam dunk. Interest could decrease in other areas especially if the new game takes its toll on the players and causes sloppy football.

How many people are going to turn out when it's Earthwind Moreland defending Freddie Mitchell who has Billy Joe Hobert throwing to him?
