OT: Jets Owner: Revis unlikely to sign before start of season

He's just a system CB anyway.

Courtesy of Florio, here is a prime example of the faulty logic that went into the Asamugha deal, a deal that changed the landscape for corners without having any relationship to what the top ten market actually entailed at the time. Nnamdi's own backloaded deal that never got restructured in part because Al was cash strapped at the time and the player would have preferred to play for a competitive organization, was formulated based on consecutive cap hits that were the result of the 120% formula...So yeah Mike, the JETS are correct in saying it was a bad deal for the Raiders and more importantly for the league -entered into by an organization who decided it was better for them to keep that player at any cost short term provided the cap would absorb most of it. The market for top corners at the time as our old pal Asante Samuel can attest was just over $9M AAV...but one desperate old coot who resents the hell out of his 31 partners in crime and the league anyway decided to make it look as if that market was suddenly $15M+ AAV... Much like Tom Condon when he negotiated Peyton Manning's second deal in 2004 demanded $34.5M in signing bonus on a $98 (or $127M) deal when the previous high water signing bonus mark had been roughly $20M. But because Manning was tagged at 120% on a backloaded rookie deal ($18M), despite the fact that elite QB's at the time were averaging $10M per, he was able to make that case to Polian and Irsay's satisfaction apparently, even though it was bound to signal a sea change in compensation for a position where at the time there were barely a handful of competent QB's manning the position and the entire cap was just $80M...and rising at only 5-6% a year.

At the end of the day a handful of greedy, single minded individuals drove the rest of the lemmings to the point a league that was the model of labor stability for more than 20 years has found itself on the brink of a lockout in the span of 4-5 seasons...

Nnamdi Asomugha's deal wasn't as bad as the Jets suggest | ProFootballTalk.com

I'm starting to think this holdout has a lot to do with Hard Knocks. I mean, an organization and an owner - a wealthy, successful business man - just can't be this much of an idiot when it comes to negotiating and PR unless it's a ruse for an upcoming reality show...right?

And say it is legit - where do you go? You can't let him rot for a year because your players - who you have worked-up into a frenzy - still have Leon Washington and Thomas Jones fresh on their minds. So, the FO will "screw over" (players will ALWAYS side with other players) another teammate and that will build what? Better team chemistry? You can't meet his demands - which I assume are outrageous (Revis' camp isn't talking - maybe he's getting paid to shut it until this first HK episode airs?) - because that would cripple your team in the future.

Personally, I hope he holds out, forces the Jets hands, and he gets traded to the Rams so my Patriots don't have to face him.

I remember when I was deciding where to go to college, I was on financial aid. School X gave me a much better offer than school Y did (something like $3,000 for the first year, IIRC).

When I called school Y asking to see if they could come closer to school X, they basically said, "We're not considering offers from school X this year."

I don't see why the owners can't/don't say the same thing here. For God's sake, when Al Davis has to spend about as much on his ST unit as the Patriots are spending on Randy Moss just to keep them there, you know something's rotten in the city of Oakland.

The JESTers started, ahem, fluffing Mr. Revis well before it was announced they were going to be on Hard Knocks.

This is.... awesome!

On the topic, if he's "the best" and Rex even agrees, then pay him like the best. Why do the jets have to be so cheap. Pay the man!

You know, I would not put this past them. It could be a key plot element that climaxes in the finale with the holdout hero coming back to the fold and now the team is "primed" for a title run. Reality show football at its most cynically contrived.

I don't think they are staging a holdout to fluff HBO's ratings, although I wouldn't be surprised if Woody didn't think out of the gate that the drama might initially draw more attention to the JETS which is his recurring MO. But how sick is it from an organizational standpoint that HBO knew about what should have been discreet talks in a local diner in advance and were precluded from filming only because the player's representation declined...

Once again folks, this is what Bill tried to warn Eric happens all the time when you work in the swamp... Woody makes a mockery out of the game and his own organization because he's an attention whore looking to push the JETS media profile in the Big Apple because that's in fact the way he measures success...

Did we just knock the Yanks or Mets or Gints off the back page of the Post??? :woohoo:

Did we just poke a stick in Belichick and Krafts lair??? :yeeha:

[update:] sorry if this was posted already, but the jets owner is now saying that it's his gut feeling that Reevis won't play at all next season. talk about a guy playing for money and not the love of the game.

I'm checking the Internet all day hoping that Revis hasn't showed up yet.

As awesome as this would be, no one should get their hopes up. There's no way he isn't in uniform week 1. Thinking they won't eventually pay him is as crazy as thinking the Pats won't eventually pay Brady.

Completely different situations.

Brady showed up and can be counted upon. The Pats will be more likely to pay him because he doesn't do this crap.

Revis???? Well, even if the Jets DO satisfy him this time and sign him to a new long-term contract they would be crawling each year on hopes and prayers that he is continually satisfied.

A me first guy..just what a team getting ready for a run to the SB (heh) needs...

Re: Jets Owner: Revis Unlikely to Sign Before Start of Season

Jetskins are in trouble. But they still have a shot at the September Superbowl

Living in VA, I really appreciate this joke. You have no idea how true your analogy is.

Agreed. Revis is coming across as very immature and not quite getting the big picture (ie it's about a whole career, not one year). Seems high-maintenance. He might find Revis Island to be a very lonely place.

No Revis yet. If he doesn't show up today, there is no point in him showing up at all this year. He's already lost credit for the whole year, he might as well sit out until he gets what he wants. Awesome

If Brady had held out with 3 years remaining on his contract and demanded the largest contract ever for his position, the Patriots probably wouldn't pay him. Their situations aren't all that comparable. There's nobody comparable to this on the Pats, because the Pats aren't dumb enough to let players with 3 years left get the impression that they have leverage.

No- he loses a year of credit towards UFA, so he'll be an RFA instead of an UFA if he buys out his contract after this year and the Jets don't exercise their option to re-buy it back. But as long as he reports before week 10 or whenever it is, that's all that it means.

No way. Even if they could pull it off, what's in it for the Jets? Occam's Razor: HBO picked the Jets because, on a team with this many prima donnas, it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that at least one of them would create outrageous drama. Between Revis, Braylon, Santonio, LT, Bart Scott, Cromartie, Rex... someone was bound to pull a stunt. The bet paid off.

Re: Jets Owner: Revis Unlikely to Sign Before Start of Season

it doesn't help negotiations that Rex predicted a super bowl win and that he stated that Revis is the best cornerback in the league. Rex' big mouth is going to backfire in a big way. Revis is at home thinkiing "ok if these guys think i'm the best well I want to be paid that way."

i am pretty sure most of the nfl world thought revis is th best, including revis, himself.i am pretty sure revis didnt need "rex's big mouth" to be convinced
