OT: Phins GM Ireland asks Bryant if his mother was a prostitute

Although I think a player's personal life is an open top when bringing them in for a predraft visit, asking a player if his mother was a prostitue was out of line. The environment that Bryant grew up in is fair game to explore, but there is a thing call tact and comon decency. Even if his mother was a prostitute, that question should never be asked at point blank as reported Ireland did.

I think this whole thing was blown out of proportion and here is what I think happened.....

Miami Dolphins interview with Dez went like this....

Ireland says: "Hey Dez,How about if you are selected by the Dolphins at #12,Would you like to become a Miami Dolphin?"

Dez says: "Hell no!,The Dolphins suck and Parcells is a jerk"

Ireland says: "Are you sure?

Dez says: "Yeah,I'll play anywhere but here"

as Dez gets up from the table and is leaving the room
Ireland says "Hey Dez,Your Mom's a Whore"


Thats how it really happened

That guy deserved to get punched. It's an a-hole question and an a-hole move designed to incite anger. The way the Dolphins management basically blew off the teams former icons also seemed very low class.

But I suppose this starts with the head, after all Parcells called Terry Glenn a She, and that got in the papers. This Ireland guy probably fancies himself Parcell's mini-me. A-holes breed more a-holes. That is apparently the culture in Miami. Glad I'm not a Dolphins fan as I'd be pissed off at how that team was being run.

Maybe i missed it, but is there any proof that this really happened? I only read that DEZ said it happened. Then i proceeded to read the rest of the article, and he doesnt sound like someone i would believe about anything. Thats not to say that Nfl GMs dont ask dumb questions, but i missed the part where someone backed up his claim.

Just a general question -- do the actual laws governing job interviews not apply to the NFL? Weren't the questions Toby Gerhart fielded very clear violations of non-discrimination law? You can't ask a job candidate to convince you that he's worthwhile despite his race. You just can't.

I thought they only did that in the "Blitz: The League" video game.

It's not a question i would have asked though and i do think it crossed a line.

So I guess it's just like Mangini making his rookies take a 600-mile bus ride to "volunteer" at his personal football camp. It's illegal and unethical, but they they know they can get away with it because they have such power over these kids' lives. Awesome.

Darn, just when I had my universe all organized around the Jets being the most classless team in the Division and Conference, you confuse the issue with information like this.

Bryant's mother's prison and drug abuse histories are a matter of public record, so I don't understand why Ireland had to ask this question other than out of prurient interest "Well, Mr. Bryant, we know yo momma sold and used crack, but Mr. Parcells, Mr. Sparano and the Ownership and I, well, we're just curious as to whether she was also a crack ho?"

Give me a break. Out of line. Idiotic. I think the League should ask him to explain himself and discipline him. And I commend Bryant for not assaulting him.

Pretty much. A few years ago I had a job interview where the clod asked me questions that are illegal to ask across the board - whether I was married, whether we had or were planning to have children, etc. But by that point I had pretty much decided I didn't want to work there anyway, so I just answered the questions and went on my way.
