Missouri DC Dave Steckel with his thoughts on his guy and pinpoints the Pats as the perfect fit and says they would be pretty dumb if they pass him up.

NFL Around the Web | If Sean Weatherspoon is available and the Patriots dont pick him, theyre not very smart.

How he will adjust to the 3-4 would be a challenge but the kid has the intagibles to be the best LB in the draft.

I could easily see BB taking this guy

he could go the giants as well at 15. Problem is that there are a lot of players rumors to go to the patriots that I see be drafted before 22 including weatherspoon.

I like Weatherspoon but I see him as more of an ILB for us. And the problem is that he duplicates Mayo's role - WILB. If Mayo were capable of playing SILB, a duo of Spoon and Mayo would be the fastest interior, sideline to sideline guys in the NFL. But then again we really need passrushing OLB or DE more than ILB at the moment.

If Missouri DC Dave Steckel were smarter, he wouldn't be insulting the best GM/Coach in the NFL.

Spoon, he's a better fit elsewhere.

Spooner: the best 43 Will to come out in a while. 43 will is the position in the 43 that correlates the least with the 34.

I couldn't get the link to work, but it appears in the Herald.
Patriots know their stuff - BostonHerald.com

...

“I don’t care if you’re playing a 6-1, or a 4-3, a 3-4, the kid is the best linebacker in the draft,” said Dave Steckel, Mizzou’s defensive coordinator. “If the Patriots need a linebacker, and Sean is available, they are not very smart if they don’t take him. He’s the guy for Bill Belichick, because he’s very, very smart. You tell him once, he knows what he’s doing.”

Not everyone is a huge fan. Weatherspoon, who has dropped 12 pounds from his senior season after making 155 tackles as a junior, is a talker. Pro Football Weekly draft expert Nolan Nawrocki said some teams removed Weatherspoon from their boards because of it.

“That’s how strongly they feel that he could negatively impact the locker room,” Nawrocki said. “He’s kind of a love-or-hate guy.”

Steckel countered by saying, “The reason he can be a leader and talk like that is because, for us, he was very productive.”

Except for the fact that Weatherspoon tackles about as well as Meriweather, sure, he'd be great at #22.

Spoon is one of the better football players in this draft. Ernie Sims was a football player too. BB liked Sims and IMO probably likes Spoon -- but neither one represents a good fit for the Pats -- especially in round one where you want more of a sure thing. I'll guess the Falcons at #19 may be a better fit.

I think the Falcons tab Brandon Graham with that 19 pick

Weatherspoon to the Giants at 15. McClain isn't a great fit in a 4-3 like the Giants play, Weatherspoon makes much more sense for them.

Actually, Graham, Spoon, and one other are their three reported targets.

Re: Dave Steckel: If Weatherspoon is there at 22 & Pats don't draft him, they're not s

There was a report out after the combine that he had turned a lot of teams off with his overly vocal arrogance, Joey Porter-ish. Even if he can fit in a 3-4 if this is true the Pats aren't going to take him. It's one thing to spend a 4th on Moss or a 2nd on Dillon who are proven commodities that you think you can fit into your locker room as productive players and it's another to use a first on a rookie with said big head.

I think the other was a DT. But I think Graham is perfect for Atlanta and it would make Atlanta's draft to get this kid.

If you think about it, a vocal fiery guy lined up next to Mayo might be just what the doctor ordered for our defense.

I think McClain excels in the middle of the Giants defense. He makes all the calls and is free to roam like he was in college. It is a perfect situation for him.

Depends on how he's doing it. If he's a leader who understands the defense and can lay some lumber like Rodney then it's a good thing. If he's a blowhard like Porter it can be divisive.

If he is a blowhard like Porter, doesn't that almost force Mayo to step up and be a leader and talk Witherspoon down? It might be exactly what Mayo needs to pull him out of his shell.

From what I've read I don't think Mayo's leadership is the issue. He's trying to do all the right things but unlike his rookie year when he could go out and play because there was veteran leadership around him he now has a lot of other things to think about. If anything a vet to help take the pressure off and allow him to go out and react might be best.

Re: Weatherspoon's vocalism.

He's nothing like Joey Porter. He's a talker alright, but in a positive confident way. Reminds me of Ray Lewis actually.

Joey Porter is a loudmouth punk.
