Glazer/Schefter: Cromartie traded to Jets for 2011 3rd (2nd if conditions met)

I'm happy with this. He's shown over the last two years he couldn't cover a receiver in a phone booth.

They were supposed to try and upgrade the pass defense.

I hope Beli responds by signing TO. :rocker:

I would've taken Antonio Cromartie for a 3rd round pick. Call me crazy.

Say what you want about Cromarties play the last 2 years, trading a 3rd round pick for a guy with that much physical talent is a good move. You won't get talent like his in the 3rd round.

Remember, it wasn't that long ago that this guy played like an all pro, and i think on a defense that can get pressure quickly he can be a good player.

You know the one thing I hate about this trade. In one short year, Ryan has earned a Belichickian reputation. Most people in the media thought Cromartie was a dog, but now that he is traded to a Ryan defense he is going to be awesome. It took Belichick two years (longer in some media people's eyes) and a Super Bowl to develop the reputation that he could take washed up players and turn them into stars. Ryan has that rep if you watch a lot of shows and read some of the articles already.

I swear if the Lions had pulled off the trade (as they were rumored), the spin would be the Lions never change and traded for an overrated underachiever. Because it is Ryan and the Jets, it is the best 1-2 punch in football.

The scary thing is that with THAT pass rush and revis on the other side, cromartie could be at an all pro level again. Good move for the JETS, bad news for us. We need to start making big moves.

the jets only have a pass rush when they blitz everyone

Seriously, why would playing opposite a shutdown CB who people afraid to throw to make a #2 CB better? Teams will try to pick on Cromartie because they are afraid to throw in Revis' direction. Teams will try to get ways to match Cromartie up against their best WR. Cromartie is going to have a target on his back in New York because he is playing opposite to Revis. If anything, it could expose his obvious liabilites (lack of toughness, too much of a gambler). The Jets overall defense might make him better, but playing opposite Revis will definitely not make him better because he will have more balls thrown his direction than ever.

I still don't get the logic that playing opposite to Revis would make any CB better.

It looks like they got big CB to play press man coverage and free up extra guys to blitz. I imagine they will be blitzing from the moment they get off the bus.

It makes cromartie "better" because they can roll coverage to his side and allow him to use his freakish athleticism to make plays. Revis pretty much shuts down one side of the field, cromartie will get the extra help. Seems simple really.

Ryan (Jr.) is going to be like his father in PHI. He will have some OK records and make things interesting but he will wear out his welcome with the team, the fans, and the players. Buddy Ryan was a below .500 coach between PHI and ARI. The apple hasn't fallen far from the tree.

Note the radio silence from all the quality franchises amid the frantic movement of all the buffoonish franchises.

Except for all the talk of Revis island, they still roll coverage over the top for Revis. It isn't like they leave him alone to cover his guy with no help like Deion used to do. They might not double team with him as Moss alluded to, but he still gets a lot of safety help over the top.

Also, Cromartie has lost some of that freakish athleticism since his injury. Besides, that freakish athleticism has really only helped him for a 9 game stretch for his career.

I trust in Bill Polian's ability to neutralize Revis. I'm sure BP will be rollin out some tape with the refs and the competition committee. Darryl will be less effective this year I'm sure......

Say what you want, Revis is a shutdown corner and we would LOVE to have someone of his ability here. With their pass rush and ability to shut down whatever side of the field they want teams are going to have a tough time throwing on them. Also, not you or anyone else knows for sure if cromartie has lost anything from an injury. Seems like most of our fans are just pissed(and rightfully so) because the jets have made a nice move and we haven't done sh*t. Just playing in THAT defense alone will make cromartie better than he was in San Diego.

Would you not have taken Cromartie for a 2011 3rd? Shoot, we traded a 2010 3rd for Burgess.

Actually if Cromartie is a bust, the Jets only lost a 3rd round pick. If he turns out to be a STUD, the 2nd round pick they lose will have been well worth it. Look BB gave up a 3rd round pick for Duane Fricking Starks. So I think the Jets are in pretty good shape here with this trade.

You had to bring this up didnt you?! Duane "jock strap around ankles" starks...i had forgotten that we gave a third for that bum....give credit to fat boy and the jets...they are making good moves and have outfoxed BB in free agency past 2 yrs

I never said Revis wasn't a great CB. Probably the best in the league. Doesn't mean they leave him alone on an island like many claim.

As for wanting Cromartie or being upset that the Jets making a move, I am neither. I am on record when there was a rumor that the Pats might trade Maroney for Cromartie, I said I didn't like Cromartie then and didn't want to trade for him. Why would my opinion change today.

I think Cromartie is an overrated player who had an overrated season in 2007. He was lucky to face Peyton Manning in an uncharacterically bad day that year (he threw six picks against the Chargers that game and when has Manning thrown six picks in a game?) which really gave him the reputation.

Here is what I wrote on this board on 2/17:

Cromartie is proof that great play from your front seven can make an average CB look like a superstar. I thought his 2007 season was way overrated. Yes, he had sexy double digit INTs and made a few amazing grabs, but the front seven even made Peyton Manning make decisions like Jay Cutler during that season. Without the play of the front seven that year, Cromartie would have had a season much like he had this year which probably would have landed him on the bench much sooner.

Great. So my point is that with the JETS front 7 and pass rush/playcalling cromartie could be the same player. He gives them more options. The JETS got better today. I'm not saying we can't or won't beat them, but they're improving and, so far, we're standing still. Their front office cant even sign a free agent unless they lose one and they STILL go out and improve the team. Its frustrating, but true.

All anyone seems to remember about Cromartie is his amazing one handed interception against Satan Manning. What they should be remembering is that Jets running play.
