Correlation between SOS and Playoff representatives (updated)

In Shaughnessy’s article (yes send me to purgatory now) he made this comment: “Their postgame comportment was encouraging Sunday after clinching the pathetic AFC East yet again.”

Well that got me thinking about SOS and I thought the AFC East had the toughest schedule as a division, but wasn’t 100% positive. So I went through and confirmed it.

So the redheaded stepchild should apologize to the AFC East for that statement. The division came out with a 500% record as a whole after facing the toughest schedule in the league. 500, by the way puts them 4th behind the AFC and NFC South, NFC East and tied with the AFC North after facing the toughest schedule in the league heading into week 17.

Here is the division SOS W/L record by conference.

AFC
East: 67-53
North: 57-63
South: 53-67
West: 63-57

NFC
East: 59-61
North: 53-67
South: 63-57
West: 65-55



This does not include the two at large games, I’m to lazy to do that, I guess I could just use the same format, division as whole. But this proves the point.

This table is based on division record with the overall SOS ranking listed in the far right column.

According to this the pathetic division is the NFC North. But to be serious this is something that doesn’t seem to get a lot of attention year in and year out. I will use our own team to prove the point.

Last year we went 11-5 against one of the weakest schedules in the league. No way does last years team go 11-5 against this years competition. And was it shocking that the AFC East played two of the weakest divisions last year and had two 11-5 teams? I don’t think so.

In the NFL the direct correlation between SOS and playoff teams is more apparent than any other league. More often than not, the division or divisions with multiple Playoff representatives played the weakest schedules.
