Reiss: Unlike Belichick, Tomlin let off hook

I don't think Tomlin or Belichick give a rat's patootie what the media thinks or says. That's because the media is incapable of understanding why either coach does what they do.

For the media, the actual coaching decision and rationale is meaningless. All that counts is if they win. If they won, and the Steelers did even though the gambit itself failed (gave up 7 points as a direct result), then they (the media) don't care.

BB is a genius for taking an intentional safety and a maroon for going for it on fourth and 2. For me, BB's only fourth and 2 mistake was taking a timeout at 2:08 because then they couldn't challenge the Faulk bobble call. But to say going for it on fourth and 2 was a bad decision because it didn't work, and saying it was good decision if it did is illogical. If I look both ways before crossing Rte 1 and get hit by a car, and my friend puts on a blindfold and run willy nilly on Rte One and somehow doesn't get hit, does that mean it is a bad idea to look before crossing Rte 1 and a good idea to run across blindfolded?

I'll bet if the Redskins had scored a TD with their weird FG shift and then won the game, then Zorn would be a reincarnation of Lombardi, at least according to the 'analysts.'

Tomlin had a great response in his press conference about the consequences of losing because of the onside kick: "I wear that like a badge of honor. That comes with the job. I don’t live in my fear, I just play and play to win and I don’t worry about being judged, I really don’t."

He had another great line as well.

"Said Steelers coach Mike Tomlin on criticism of his onside kick call, "I don't look for feedback. I just try to win football games. My 8-year-old asked me what I was thinking. ... I told him to be quiet."

What most fans and mediots fail to grasp is they have about as much of a basis for questioning coaches with SB rings as Tomlin's kid...

I do like Tomlin. His team may not be having the best season but on a personal level he seems to be a pretty likeable fellow.

Yeah, especially considering that he had a tough act to follow.

Actually, those of us with kids fully understand that his kid actually has more of a basis for questioning him than do fans and mediots, as our kids know what idiots we truly are! :singing:

• Mike Tomlin was very, very lucky. I feel the same way about onside-kicking with a lead and four minutes left as I did about Bill Belichick's fourth-and-two call last month in Indianapolis: I don't like it. I know why Tomlin did it: He didn't trust his defense, and he wanted Ben Roethlisberger to have a chance to drive the Steelers downfield to win if indeed the Packers scored, and he figured he'd rather take his chances of the element of surprise and recovering the onside kick. But it's still wrong. I don't like telling **** LeBeau and the reigning defensive player of the year (James Harrison) and one of the all-time proud Steelers warriors, James Farrior, that they're not good enough to keep Aaron Rodgers from going 80 yards.

The reason Belichick got killed and Tomlin's simply taking heat is simple: Tomlin's logic, faulty though it may be, did not prevent a Pittsburgh victory. New England didn't convert the fourth-and-two and ended up losing. When a daring play works, it's a smart play; when it doesn't work, it's dumb. I still don't think Tomlin's call was a good one, but the Steelers saved his bacon.
obvisouly it was a bad call according to king but he didnt choose to call tomlin arrogant and "iam smarter than you are ,hubris"
i sent a message to him on his twitter about his choice of words..obviouslt no response.

I love that! Too bad the Steelers fans and players past have made me not like them. Otherwise I'd root for Tomlin. Is it just Polamalu that's missing on defense? I really am surprised at them this year.
