OT: Andy Reid extended - good coach?

Reid was just extended by the Eagles for 3 years. I wanted to know what people here think of him as a coach. Some Reid facts:

He has the exact win% in the reg season as BB.

Andy Reid - 105 wins - 66 losses - 1 tie - .614% win%
Bill Belichick - 145 wins - 91 losses - 0 ties - .614% win%

Now BB has had more success in the Playoffs (goes w/o saying) but Reid still has taken his team to the playoffs 7 times out of 10 yrs in Philly and he is in position to do it again this year.

He took the Eagles to the NFC championship game 5 times in 8 years (01, 02, 03, 04 and 08). Now they only made the SB in 2004 (losing to the PATS) but still he is a 'winner'. With all that said I think he is overrated becasue his team losses at least 1-2 games a year they should not and I believe 'good' coaches don't let that happen. Now BB's Pats are doing the same thing with losses this year to teams they should beat. Does this change my opinion of Reid. Maybe a little.

If BB retired today and you could have Reid as the next NE coach would you want him?

Absolutely not. He is one of the worst at clock management. That is a bizarre blind spot for him (now where did I get that from?).

He is an excellent coach, I would hire him. He has a much different style than BB but ask yourself, how many more games would Reid have won with Brady as he QB instead of puke boy McNabb.

i maybe in the minority but i like him alot as coach. he is managing the 'red sox' of the nfl and his team always has something or the other scrutiny going on but in the end his team ends up in the championship game. Sure he hasnt won SB but how many coaches can get their team to be consistent threats .Not many especially with all the circus involved. And he isnt afraid to make non conventional moves like BB.

He's definitely a good coach. He prepares his team well, game plans well, motivates the team, knows his Xs and Os, etc.

He isn't the guy I'd want making decisions for me in the big moment on Sundays. He just is not good in those spots.

Yes he is a good coach. His schemes and game plans are effective and he has hired two good defensive coordinators (Jim Johnson and the current one) so he also seems like he has a good handle on evaluating coaching talent.

He's a great coach; I would say the best never to win a Super Bowl who is still coaching. He has managed to work with a very good QB who is also moody and inconsistent and has taken his teams to five Conference Championships (out of a very tough Division) in eight years and, as we know, a Super Bowl. He has also figured out how to handle the crazed media and fan base in Philly and survive all these years.

Would I want him as BB's successor? Hard to say. He's cerebral and a tough motivator like Belichick, but I think he's built a very different system in Philly. The transition would cost at least a season, maybe two. If I had to pick an NFL Coach, currently coaching in the League, I'd pick Coughlin; they have worked together and respect and know each other very well so the transition would be a lot less disruptive. Of the currently inactive HC's, I'd pick Shanahan and wouldn't touch Cowher, Dungy or Grudin with ten foot poles.

Well, when your fan base has people like Dennis, Dee, Mac, Charley and Frank, then you know it's going to be more than a little crazy.

Ditto. Philly was in a weak state before he took over. Big reason for the turnaround. McNabb was a major part of it, too but even when McNabb got hurt the teams never seemed to skip a beat. He's kept his team competitive for a long time as well, one of those teams you can never really count out year to year. Not sure why Philly is struggling this year, they should still make the playoffs though.

The real shame is that he is a better HC than Dungy or Cowher, but they will both be seriously considered for the HOF because of their SB wins while Reid won't.
