Can this team win a championship with Dean Pees calling the defensive plays?

He has been here since Romeo left, and we have had defensive melt downs almost every year. He lets teams hang around by going to the prevent/vanilla-D when we have the lead.

Statistically his units have performed well relative to other teams, based on points against stats. However, his secondary and red zone defense has been poor for multiple seasons, and Belichick has shown in multiple seasons/games that he doesn't trust Pees' ability to stop another team in a key situation late in the game.

If Samuel could catch, his defense would have allowed just 10 points in the Super Bowl. The poll sucks. Where is the "he's a good, competent DC". Instead we have to pick between great and needs to be carried.

If I could Digg this, I would. What an awful poll..

The 'good competent DC' option isn't too different from the first choice. You're splitting hairs here.

The Poll should be can this team win with whoever is the O coordinator.

I don't think he's great, I don't want to vote for that.

Here's a stat, I triple checked as I didn't believe it :

We've allowed the second least points in the league this year.

There is nothing wrong with Pees, see the latest D stats, it is difficult to keep up the intensity for 60 minutes... there also has been a couple of significant injuries.. IMO this D has gotten better, we a pressing the WR's more...

Finally, BB is not listening to Bon Jovi in his head set...if he does not like it, he can change... he is the only coach that I have ever seen when the D comes off he brings over the wipe board and shows what is going on..

For the nth time, anyone who has a problem with Pees has a problem with BB too. If BB disagrees with his playcalls, do you think he just sits passively by, afraid to say or do anything? This is the most idiotic concept ever vomited up on this board. BB's MO has not changed one bit since his days with the giants. He has ALWAYS played coverage against good QBs - look at SB XXV, SB XXXVI, every game against Peyton. Bend but don't break is Bill's strategy, not Pees's. The only time they play very aggressively on D is against inexperienced QBs and/or receivers that don't scare them. The Chris Simms game, the Kyle Boller games, and the Miami games since Chambers left are in this category. It is Pees' job to implement BB's plan. Do you really think BB is calling for 7 man blitzes and press coverage and Pees is calling a soft zone? Do you really think if BB wanted his corners 5 yards off, he would let them play 10 yards off? You all have got to be kidding me.

Not to mention, this is now Pees' 4th year as DC, if Belichick didn't think he was good he would have moved on.

Although I am not the biggest fan of Pees, what did he really do all that wrong yesterday other than allow the Jets to score on one drive. All the crap he is getting for the second half, the Jets had the ball six times in the second half and here is how they fared:

Touchdowns - 1
Punt - 1
Turnovers - 3
End of game - 1

Yes, the Pats came out flat to start the second half, but they rebounded quickly. The Pats defense gave up a total of 7 points (and they scored that many too) and turned the ball over 5 times yesterday.

I think the poll choices are silly, so I didn't vote.

I think this team is more than capable of winning with Pees as our DC. Our offense is plenty good enough, as is our defense if they will actuallybe allowed to play. However, I also think Pees is more than capable of sinking our chances with some ridiculous defensive play calling and formations, and that he is more of a liability than an asset.

My worst nightmare: we're up 31-14 over the Vikings in the Super Bowl heading into the 4th quarter. Pees suddenly reverts to good old BBDB with no pass rush. Favre suddlenly has time to throw and a bunch of open receivers, and throws for 3 TDs in the 4th quarter. Vikings win the SB, and the media gushes over Favre.

Sound familiar? I'd rather lose to the Dolts in the AFCCG than face that scenario.

How can ANYONE in this forum presume to know enough to pass judgment on Pees? He does BB's bidding for one thing, and he does it with the personnel available. The stupidest argument comes from those who want Crennel back. Look at the players he had -- McGinest, Vrabel, Bruschi, Seymour, Law, Harrison, Colvin, etc., all in their prime. It's personnel on this team NOT the defensive coordinator, especially with BB overseeing the defense.

Yeah, and it would have been his defense that was the reason for the undefeated season as well. I agree. His defense played very well against the Colts last week too.

I can't really agree with you there.

The personnel on this defense is fine, overall. The pass rush is a bit lacking, and we could use a bit more experience, but overall the defense has performed well. What is perplexing is the repeated examples of how we attack and dominate teams and then revert to a passive, soft scheme. I can't put the blame for that on the players. They're not the ones calling the schemes.

Soft defensive coverage killed us in the Denver and Indy games, and hurt is in the 3rd quarter against the Ravens and Jets. I'm not "passing judgment", but it's enough to make me nervous that we haven't learned from our mistakes.

Then blame BB. Pees is just making sure his philosophy gets implemented.

Question should be can the Pats win another super bowl without a shutdown corner.

I don't know, but the JETS have ONE and they can't even win a game lately...We won one with ours sitting in a wheelchair and lost one with his supposedly annointed replacement in the backfield. The Steelers and Giants and Colts never had any and they've won the last 3 Superbowls. So there must be more to it...

I agree that Pees is too easily the lightning rod for criticism when it comes to indicting our defense for something. After all, he is not responsible for our third quarter scoring woes.
