You can't use "gassed" as an excuse to let Belichick off the hook when the team is light at those positions because of decisions Belichick made. Does the D-line get 'gassed' if Seymour is there and active instead of Brace? Does the linebacker corps get 'gassed' if Vrabel is in there to help with the depth, replacing guys like Ninkovich/Woods/Burgess?

As for Samuel, they sure as hell could have used him last night, although I wasn't referring to him since he wasn't with the team last year.

Hehehe, sorry bud I couldn't resist. I'm half in the bag and am starting to get over this loss so my sarcasm is beginning to come out a little bit more. Anyway, I know that the last two drives took two minutes each. That doesn't really answer my question though. How did the defense get so gassed, especially when we controlled the TOP and had a few sustained drives that kept the defense off the field (especially the one in the third quarter when Maroney fumbled).

I thought it was pretty obvious the guys on the line looked smoked. Wilfork especially. The play calling really lightened up too. Wonder if it is connected or they were just trying to keep the ball in front of them. That doesn't really work against a fast, effective, throwing machine in a no huddle. They move just as quick as a long pass anyway. KEEP YOUR FOOT ON THEIR THROAT.

Actually the defensive line was gassed because they were thin last night. Jarvis and Ty were inactive. Although we owned TOP {and every other statistic in this game} the no huddle took it's toll on the line. It may be a very different scenario the next time we meet Indy in January.

This is another point which I would like to see addressed. Can someone please tell me how or why the defense was so "gassed" considering that we held the ball for almost 36 minutes compared to the Colts 25 minutes? We DOMINATED time of possession. If the defense was so gassed, perhaps it's time to start cranking up the windsprints during practice.

Personally, I think that people are mistaking "gassed" with just playing some ****ty prevent defense. You could almost see Manning's eyes light up midway through the third quarter.

Unless I missed something, 11 plays in 3:51 and 13 plays in 4:33 are the number of plays and the minutes of possession the Colts had the ball in the 3rd and 4th quarter prior to the 4th down decision.

If the players were 'gassed' after that, perhaps the conditioning coach needs to be fired?

This loss for the Pats could go one of two ways - either it brings them together or they completely self destruct. With Thomas already going off and his piss poor play, it wouldn't surprise me to see him on the inactive list the entire season. In addition, his recent comments probably confirm he will be cut after the season.

That being said, I am in no way comparing the two situations or players, just saying that Belichick doesn't give the heave ho automatically. After Milloy was axed, Bruschi took shots at Belichick as well.

If this trade had been flipped, everyone would be saying it was a Patriots' steal for getting the best 3-4 defensive lineman in football for a #1 pick 2 years down the road, and getting him when they'd be able to pay any price necessary to keep him in the offseason due to the uncapped year.

The Patriots traded away their best defensive player against both the run AND the pass from last year, and they did it for a first round pick two years down the road. As a stand alone trade, this was a win for the Raiders as long as they re-sign Seymour.

here is nobody on the Patriots defensive line that currently even approaches the overall talent and impact of Seymour. However, I love the immediate gratification line. It'll make everyone who's pissed off about 2007 feel much better to know that putting off that gratification will really help come 2013-2014 when the first rounder gotten in this trade really starts having a major impact. Why worry about winning Super Bowls in 2009 when you can draft someone to help ease Brady into his NFL dotage in 2011?

....So, instead of:

Trading Seymour prior to this past draft and getting players from this draft
Keeping Seymour for one last run and then franchising and trading him this offseason
Keeping Seymour for one last run and then letting him walk
Keeping Seymour and then paying him next year in an uncapped year

the team worried about its pocket and pushed this whole thing out for 2 years.

For the sake of possible rookie contract savings in a CBA that could well be something other than what the Patriots anticipate, the team weakened itself for this year, for certain, and for next year had it just paid him the money.

Why on Earth would you respect my opinion if I DIDN'T have reservations about this trade?

It wasn't looking great last week either as Pat White was ripping off a huge run right past the side of that line that Seymour used to occupy. I'm just praying that it looks better after draft day in 2011.
